The current structure works well but could be used to allow the TC be what it was always supposed to be - an opportunity to keep playing in the summer and develop the weaker counties.

Keep current 16 - 16 SM - TC split

2026 has new double elimination format

SM Cup Round 1 - 8 v 8 (should be open draw)
SM Cup Round 2A winners into SM Cup qfinals
SM Cup round 2B winners play 2A losers with winners into SM Cup q finals
SM Round 2B losers drop to SM Shield

TC Cup Round 2A winners into SM Shield qfinals
TC Cup Round 2B winners play 2A losers in TC Cup qfinals
Round 2B losers enter TC Shield
TC Shield home final winners go to NYC to play TC shield final.

Great and important NYC participate, get opportunity but like the hurling needs to be done in right way.

Maybe a playoff between NYC and lowest ranked third place.

So we're back to the top 2 teams from the groups in the QFs which kinda shows the format was not much assistance to the lower teams. At least with the open draw next year and qualifiers it'll level it out. A team that loses twice in a championship shouldn't progress. It's probably the 8 teams you'd have expected at the beginning of the competition but perhaps maybe not Offaly and Westmeath having away QFs. Looking forward to the draw tomorrow. Wicklow, Fermanagh and Limerick at home gives them a great chance of progression. A Kildare Westmeath QF or Semi opens up the door big time for an outsider to reach the final. Offaly and Fermanagh QF would remove one of the chasing pack too!

Westmeath can't meet Kildare in the semi final; if they manage to win their quarter final… however; I've a feeling they will be drawn against Kildare tomorrow morning in the quarter final!
