Replying To preddan:  "These would be my rankings of the teams in Joe mcdonagh cup based on performances so far this year
1 carlow 2 Kildare 3 laois 4 down 5 Kerry 6 westmeath..at moment would be v little between Kildare, laois and down... carlow comfortably in front...Kerry on a downward trend and westmeath having a nightmarish start to 2025"
I can see us failing away come championship. Looking at the teams there is not one I am confident of beating.

Saturday, June 7 - Munster SHC final, 6.0

Sunday, June 8 - JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL, CROKE PARK, 1.45;
Leinster SHC final, 4.0, Croke Park

The Joe McDonagh Cup final will be on a Sunday this year. Seems the Leinster and Munster finals are going to alternate being on a Saturday or Sunday.
It'll be harsh if the McDonagh finalists have to play a preliminary quarter final the Saturday after. Hopefully they'll be given at least 7 days.

All teams will have had at least two free weekends before the McDonagh starts off. Carlow are the favourites. Laois and Westmeath to battle it out for a place in the final. Down and Kildare are replacing Laois and Westmeath in 1B next year. They'll have high hopes as well. The ever present Kerry in the McDonagh Cup are in trouble. Going to be a tough campaign starting away to Kildare.

After our league performances don't know how you can put us up there.Carlow,Down and Laois all ahead of Westmeath with Kerry,Kildare and ourselves having to improve ten points if we have any hopes or else face the drop.

It is hard to gauge where those who competed in 1B are to those who were in Division 2. Down's trip to Carlow will give some indication.

How will this weekends game go? Interested to see Laois. Will they walk it as expected.

Laois? Interesting! I'd see Carlow as favourites. Your own crowd aren't going badly either. Must be confident of a best finish yet?

I watched Westmeath in NCP and they beat us. Carlow were poor but Westmeath played to a.pattern and were.full value for thee win. the faster ball will suit them and their pace and scoring ability should not be discounted. I would see.Westmeath as one of the favourites.

Yes, Carlow are favourites in my eyes.

I think Kerry and Kildare will be fighting relegation against eachother, so their opening match against eachother this coming weekend will be interesting.

At this stage anyone can win it if they are lucky with injuries and get on a roll. Momentum is very important.

For me Carlos,Laois and Down in that order are the favourites. We were dreadful in the league, spiritless and Hurling stupidly.Id agree the fast ball Will help us a little but 2 away matchs could put us out early and fighting to avoid Christy Ring.Laois beat us in Mullingar and let's be honest it would be a major turnaround for us to win in O Moore Park.
Kildare looked good until the division 2 final while Kerry will as usual up their game for the championship.

Favourites for me are Leix, with Carlow and Westmeath a close second. I know it was against half a Carlow team but I was impressed by Westmeath when they beat us in the last league game, especially the shooting of Killian Doyle. With a dry ball he'll be even more dangerous.

I thought Leix were unlucky not to get at least a draw v Carlow in the league. I thought I wouldn't like to have to beat them in Championship and whoever wins it will have to.

Any of the rest could beat any of the above three but I don't know if they could win four out of the five games which is probably required to make the final. A good start is crucial. A team that doesn't win at least one of their first two games are gone.

As an aside, I was seriously impressed by Leix minors last weekend. Big, strong and skillful team who'll take beating.

All of Kerry's opponents enjoyed a better league campaign. Kildare are newly promoted back to the McDonagh. All to play for when they clash in the opening round this weekend. Kildare are understandably the favourites. Sure we'll hope for the best.

Kildare are a coming team, but have been for a good while now. They played a lower standard of opposition during the League also. I'd have Kerry favourites.

If they get 77 days it won't matter. Farcical that McDonagh finalists get to play preliminary quarter final. Nowhere near that standard

It is a tough one. I enjoyed the visit of Wexford a few years ago though it was a tough afternoon. I suppose with the new Division 1B - that's a good opportunity for the likes of Down and Kildare to be coming up against the likes of Clare and Wexford.

after their league win id nearly put Down as dark horses or second favourites after carlow at this stage...i still think carlow with a full team are comfortably number 1
1.carlow (Had a good league in 1bwith a huge win over waterford) ....
2. Down (Won 2a and two or three great individual players, a county punching above their weight) ..
3.laois (Lost their goalie one of best in ireland and manager before league campaign)
4.Kildare.(Runners up in 2a which ended disapointingly in a way) .
5.westmeath (their worst start to a season since 2011 but got a win v carlow in last game might mean a change of sorts hopefully)
and
6..Kerry (Lost one of their best players to another county and another not living up to potential, kerry have gone back alot from about 5 or 6 years ago.

Its an open competition and one of the best in the GAA. Anybody could win it.
Kerry are never easy. Westmeath beat Carlow and were full value for their win. Kikdare have as yet underachieved and in past years left their best hurling in the league. This year might be their year.
Laois is a big hurling county and I expect them to go all out and have a big bearing on the destination of the cup.
Saturday will tell a lot as Down visit NCP. Down are always fiercely competitive on the pitch and so difficult to beat.
Anybody could win it.

Joe McDonagh Cup round 1
Laois v Westmeath, Portlaoise, 3pm
Carlow v Down, Netwatch Cullen Park, 2.30pm
Kildare v Kerry, Cedral St Conleth's Park, 2pm
Round 1 throws in today. Any predictions will probably look ridiculous at 5pm! At the time of writing hoping Kerry can get off to a flying start like they did against Westmeath last year. Otherwise this is going to be a long and difficult championship.

I'll predict three home wins today.
