That's a shame. Are you coaching at it? Who else is doing the coaching? Parents who coach at the local club? Or teachers? Or both? What time of day are they doing it?

Lar Corbetts steps? You wouldn't have to go back that far for goals with too many steps settling games. Sure Kilkenny beat Dublin last year with a goal with way more steps involved.

Not sure we are any worse than we were under Davy as regards being competitive. We only beat Munster counties in League games under Davy, and we are still doing that under Keith. We have beaten Waterford, Clare and Limerick in the League under Keith's watch, and beaten Galway in Championship which Davy never managed. Granted it was a weakened Kilkenny team that we beat this year, but equally we didn't start with 5 or 6 starters either. And it took something I'm not going to dwell on in public anymore to stop us winning what was a de facto Leinster semifinal against them last year. Davy only managed to beat Dublin once in Championship in 5 years, I'd be pretty optimistic that if Keith is given 3 more years he'd at least match that.

That 2017 semi final was a huge result to be fair to him and sort of set the tone v KK for a few years to come. We were at least in 2 Leinster finals under Davy and didn't we draw in KK the next year narrowly missing out on another Leinster final appearance. 2019 under Davy. Then I think in 2021 we were unlucky not to be in Leinster final. This year we weren't even in the could have or should have frame. Last year yeah for sure against KK there was a horrendous decision but its hard to say we should have won that game, KK well on top after 25 mins but yeah I know there was just a point in it at fhe end. We were probably closer to winning an All-Ireland under Davy though

Sorry, 2009. The Kk penalty where the foul was a few yards outside penalty area.

Well, if the ambition for the next 3 years is to beat Dublin then nothing shows how far ambition has fallen.

Beating Dublin would be a huge step towards a Leinster Final, which is the ambition every year. Then see where that takes us. In any case I was merely answering the post that claimed we were more competitive under Davy, when we weren't really. I'm glad you think we should be aiming higher, like an AI in the next few years. You are finally getting more positive the longer you are down here ;-) Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16311 - 11/06/2025 06:35:30 2616576 Link 0 |
If Kilkenny were well on top after 25 minutes last year why did they need that decision to beat us? They were hanging on desperately in the last 10 minutes. We got that bit of luck in 2019 to get to the final, 2 draws in 2 games the final day wouldn't be that common. Clare got a bit of luck along the way last year. Most importantly being lucky with injuries. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16311 - 11/06/2025 06:42:12 2616577 Link 0 |
I ended up watching a bit of it back to check, Ive never watched any part of Kilkennys 4 in a row back before now. He ended up still being fouled inside the rectangle though before the penalty was given. I agree it, shouldn't have been a penalty in my opinion, but I suppose the referee could say he didnt think there was a foul when he was stood up initially, that would be a matter of interpretation. Last year Cody never set foot in the rectangle at all. https://www.balls.ie/gaa/crazy-kilkenny-penalty-wexford-decision-599200. I don't think that's the point Viking was trying to make, he was just comparing the results of different managers

We were definitely closer. I really thought 2019 was our year. I was only a baby in 96 so too young to remember it. I'll never forget the disappointment leaving Croker after that Tipp game. I hope to be in Croke Park to see us win the All Ireland one day.

As an underage coach, a suggestion that might be impactful would be that 3 -4 times each year a highly experienced coach - either a volunteer or member of the coaching staff - would attend a session with club coaches, where they would observe a session and then maybe sit with the coaches for an hour and agree a coaching plan for the next 2-3 months, providing them with guidance on what to focus on and possibly a post meeting package of resources to support this - videos/handouts etc. Training our trainers is critical and while we have coaching courses am I alone in thinking we're seeing less sessions than happened 5-6 years ago where we had master classes with coaches from outside the county happening? wexford2012 (Wexford) - Posts: 115 - 11/06/2025 11:01:49 2616608 Link 0 |
2019 was one we left behind, no doubt about it, 5 points up with 20 mins to go and playing a 14 man Tipp side, sure how did we let that slip??? It rankered at the time and all the more so as a year passes. Kilkenny in the final would have been a dinger

I've watched that game about 10 times since and it is no less painful. Chin's goal just felt like it was written in the stars. Soon after when the whistle blew I didn't want to leave croke park. If felt like the fates had made a terrible mistake. As the years go by and we get further away it's starting to feel worse, but equally we just need to be looking forward. The only thing we can take from that is: 2009 - 2011 was the worst period in our history. We all put our shoulders to the wheel and got some decent underage going. 2013-14 we started seeing results 2017-19 we became serious contenders. We did it before, we can do it again. It doesn't actually take that long when you start doing things right. The team didn't change that much from 14-19. The core group of players just got way better. We need to be teaching every child what it means to be from Wexford. Your people have taken on empires. Whether that's a fight for freedom or the aristocracy of hurling in croke park. There's no limit to what you can achieve if you're willing to work and you know who you are. Le chroi agus lamh. Make sure we all understand what that means. We were closer in 19 because we made a Leinster Final that year, something we haven't managed since. If we had made one last year we might well have won it. Finals take on a life of their own, and we'd of had over 40k supporters there.

Been on a few coaching the coaches sessions over the ladt 2 years. 7 I think. Some were poorly attended despite being well publicised.

Looking for expert coaches to go out to clubs three or four times a year to do that would hardly be feasible, when you consider they'd have to hit more than 40 clubs/combined teams, observe a session at maybe five different age groups (say U10 up to U18), and do a different plan for each of those age groups, based on different needs. Even if you were to focus on just one group - let's say every U14 squad in the county was to get it this year - it'd still be a tall order. And then, with the inevitable requests/demands to also do it for football, you'd be immediately doubling the load. As Viking said, there are a good few courses offered each year at places like the COE or district venues. Have been on a few myself. And as Viking also said, some of them weren't very well attended, despite every club being informed of them. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2948 - 11/06/2025 15:50:15 2616706 Link 0 |
