How many All Ireland captains did not speak Irish. it is sad to see that our native language is falling from the first language place. I think that only two captains have not spoken Irish when lifting SAM and both may be from the North of Ireland. I can take it that the Kerry captain had his few words ready but it was not to be this year. tomsmith (Cavan) - Posts: 4033 - 28/09/2008 20:17:58 109705 Link 0 |
At the ladies finals yesterday, the Tipperary captain said her speech in English and thankoed everyone from the manager to the doctor to her daddy who made sure she always worked hard and trained hard and then she remembered to thank Clare for a sporting game!! Did anybody see the Kilkenny under 21 captain accepting the Leinster cup. He said "Tá an athas orm an corn seo Cill Ceannaigh" -Which translates as " I really happy this cup Kilkenny". "Tá an athas orm an corn seo a glacadh ar foireann (county)" has become so standardised. Clash-of-da-ash (Galway) - Posts: 927 - 29/09/2008 11:47:18 109990 Link 0 |
If memory serves me correctly Mick Lyons (Meath) didn't speak a word of Irish back in 1987 and im nearly certain that Seamus Moynihan (Kerry) didn't speak any Irish in 2000 either. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 29/09/2008 11:49:53 110003 Link 0 |

Fair play Dara O Cinnede in 2004 when he spoke Irish all through his speech. galwayfan (None) - Posts: 764 - 29/09/2008 12:57:14 110123 Link 0 |
Dooher when he lifted the Sam Maguire. I have no particular grá for Galway or Kerry but Joe Connolly and Páidí Ó'Sé's speeches as Gaeilge were memorable. If memory serves me correctly, didn't the Sligo hurling captain say something akin to "Tá an-áthas orm an corn seo Liam McCarthy a ghlacadh....." when he was lifting the Nicky Rackard Cup in August? Tadhgín Tréan, I don't want to be too picky but Dooher has spoken Irish on the both occasions he has collected Sam. The remainder of the speech in Aughabrack english may have been quite hard for outsiders to translate, I'd say even some east Tyrone people had bother catching every word hi. mugsys_barber (Tyrone) - Posts: 2160 - 29/09/2008 13:24:09 110149 Link 0 |

they usaully have to start of the speech in irish with a few words of it. they read it of the screen just in front of them in the hogan stand. anthony daly gave some memorable speches in his time. the whipping boys of munster speech was a classic. howshecuttin (Longford) - Posts: 376 - 29/09/2008 14:05:06 110213 Link 0 |
