I think it was an early misrepresentation. Division 1 hurling should awaken from its slumber next year.

With 2 up/2 down, I imagine more teams will yoyo, with the quality of their 6 games varying considerably from year to year. To bridge that gap, I wonder if a few crossover inter-division games each year would help? (say, two games per team, 1Av1B, against teams ranked 7&8 places apart and a 7v8 tie).

More unnecessary complications and in any case I don't think you will get too many yo yo teams. I doubt very much that the 2 teams who go up from 1b to 1a after the 1st season will get relegated straight back down. The last time there was a 1a and a 1b with promotion and relegation, between 2012 and 2019, no team that got promoted from 1b went straight back down. Not one.

It'll be a surprise if any of the top 9 spend more than one year outside of Division 1A. That's the challenge for Antrim, Offaly, Westmeath, Carlow and Laois. It's a fair challenge though. They'll all want to claim a major scalp

• An Dún
• An Mhí
• Ceatharlach
• Ciarraí
• Cill Dara
• Laois

Carlow and Laois will be expected to qualify for the Division 2A final. The other 4 will be battling for 3rd to take on 2nd in a semi-final. The 2A winners and runners-up will be promoted to 1B. The 2A semi-final will have more to play for than the final. The 2A semi-final will go out with a bang.

True but the League will still be a time for seeing what lads are like before the championship. Any of the other teams could make a right good go of 1b if they wanted.

I'm glad to see you considered the 'double jeopardy' of two down this time around in your assessment.

Counties 10 and 11 who are on an upward trajectory should be able to challenge the top 9. Antrim and Offaly are possibly the most likely to help bring big crowds back to the Leinster championship, if they can start getting in the mix for third place in Leinster.

At League level there's nothing between the top 9. When there was a 1a and 1b the last time only Tipp and Kilkenny never got relegated, although Kilkenny finished last in 1a the year it was done away with. Even with 2 up 2 down its still not very likely the same 2 teams that go up will get relegated straight back down. I do think the 2 up 2 down is definitely the way to go though to reduce the number of meaningless games.

I'm not arguing against 2 up/2 down - it is the way to go - just that it is twice as likely that promoted teams could go back down, not that they would.

The two teams relegated from 1A are most likely to be promoted alright. The two teams promoted from 1B will be determined to retain their new 1A status. Avoiding relegation from 1A will now be a good battle, similar to Division 1 in football.
