Hurling - Sobering Thoughts Of Liam Sheedy - What Should Be Done?

The Tyrone system is an almost absolute outlier in how counties run things, and I for one certainly wouldn't be taking it as a role model.

Yes, they put great value on their league, but I'd say that if you asked players at the start of the year "which would you rather win?", 100% of them would say championship. And then the championship comes down to a straight knock-out where you could be out after just 60 minutes.

I don't think there's any prospect of people being happy to go back to straight knock-out in a county that's already got group stages to their championships.

Maybe include in that rule there has to be a scan?

That'd be adding all other sorts of complications and obligations.

Also - suppose an inter-county player is all set to play a club match at 2 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon, a week or two ahead of an inter-county one. But at 11 a.m. that day, he slips getting out of the shower, or trips over the dog, or otherwise suffers a genuine injury in some sort of household accident.

He's not going to dash off immediately for a scan to have the injury certified, even if he could get an appointment. Much more likely to be straight onto the physio to try get himself right for the afternoon. What happens then?

A scan taken on the Monday would be no use. All it would show would be that he had an injury at the time the scan was done on the Monday. Am far from a medical expert, but I suspect there'd be no way of it proving that the injury actually occurred 24 hours or more earlier.

It's easier in Tyrone where it's not really a dual county and they can get county players out for the club in the league somewhat.

Croke Park want league and championship decoupled also and that's part of where the value in the league comes from in the northern counties that link them.

If that happens it happens. If he had to go to A and E or a physio sure it would be known he went there. But a scan would deter intercounty managers from making a player feign an injury somewhat.

I assumed the reason you specified a scan was to make sure it was as official and definite as possible.

A physio writing up a report or even just a cert to say that a player attended would be nowhere near the same thing. Physios are not licensed medical professionals and therefore aren't subject to the same sort of rules and repercussions as doctors, radiographers, etc. A physio could basically write up anything he/she wanted, without fear of any real consequence.

I reckon this is all moot, anyway. I can't ever see a time where we go back to club championships (with inter-county players involved) running alongside inter-county championships.

No me neither. I think what we have is the best possible system. It would want to be when it took as long as it did to agree on!!!

Yeah a physio can just say "hamstring strain" and it is his opinion.
And given we see physios on rubbing players to waste time every week, I don't think ethics comes in to it.
