Is it common for teams to pick what ref they want?

Only if you were Jim Gavin, according to some :-)

Only if you're Kilcoo it seems.

Disgraceful at a time when ref recruitment is at all time low.

And get they wonder why.

What was Kilcoo's objection based on? I haven't seen it referenced anywhere.

What's ironic is that some refs don't even respect other refs. There are plenty refs involved with their local clubs as coaches and selectors who I've heard giving dog's abuse to the actual ref.
Despite them knowing full well what it's like, they become just like everyone else when they're on the sideline.

More importantly, do refs pick teams to give certain decisions against?

A dangerous precedent. The worse part is that this was entertained.

Down did stick with the ref. Kilcoo appealed their decision all the way to the DRA. Their appeal got threw out. The referee decided he didn't want to ref the game.

I thought they did stick by him. Kilcoo appealed and that was also rejected, but the ref himself stepped down as he felt it would it overshadow his performance either way. I can understand his decision, but he was put in an awful position by Kilcoo.

They didn't pick a ref; they merely objected to one - big diffference. Just as any accused can object to members of a jury. It is bizarre though.

I was very surprised to see a referee from outside Down willing to step in to do the game.
Given that a team needs permission to play outside the county, one would think that the same should apply to referees.

Great to see Croke Park stepping in to resolve this mess. It should never have happened that Mr Gough was going to "cross" the line and referee in Co Down. He should stay in his own county as there are plenty of good referees in Down.

Kilcoo objected to the ref which for thrown out on the sat morning ( day before game ) that was the end of the matter regarding kilcoo position.
From there the county board made every decision from contacting Gough on the friday just in case he was needed which is very strange as other refs in county were available, The county board took the original ref out of game even tho he was happy to do it with certain add-ons, and the ref who actually did the game on the sun was always the stand in ref.
County board has made a shambles of this.
