I was going through you tube the other night and came upon highlights of 1988 hurling league and championship..Tipp beat Limerick in tbe Munster hurling semi final..a good game despite the 0-15 to 0-08 final score..commentator said at tbe end that Tipp then played the winners of the other semi final 'to be played in 2 weeks time"..we had 2 all Ireland semi finals in under 24 hours this weekend..like what is all this about..no real time now to savour a few results..

Oh another smart ass defender outbofvthe traps..lord every section of Irish society has them as we seen in the last 2 decades let alone last 2 years, the Gaa are responsible for all this change..voted for probably by people like yourself locally and then transferring to national congress..did ya work for RTE or political party the way you conveniently separate the fixtures etc from Gaa as a whole..as in a wing within organisation is responsible more so than Governing body..no need to be so dismissive let me say.

McHale machinery got in on the act shortly thereafter. Joe at the cattle crush was a classic though - fair play. Had forgotten that add

You mean a time when there was an actual build up to our biggest games and a chance to enjoy the games, generate a bit of buzz for the upcoming big games. A time when we celebrated the games we had rather than what they are now, almost a hindrance to get out of the way as soon as possible so a club player can know when to take a holiday!!

Barely a chance to get up the bunting these days for a big game.

There has to be a happy medium.

that 1988 game was originally fixed for 12 June that year but when it emerged Ireland would play England on that day the hurling game was brought forward a week.

Accommodating club players, and club fixtures is a great way to celebrate our games. They do after all make up 99% of the players.

NCF (North Connacht Farmers for anyone who is wondering) had a classic too around '89. It ends with 3 Mayo players drinking a liter of milk each from the carton.. but TJ Kilgallon is wearing Blue shorts under the Mayo jersey instead of White - his own must have been in the wash that day!

Fluke and general worms perhaps, but dosing for ringworm I doubt. Ringworm remedy more likely a rub imo, certainly for humans it is.

My Dad, my brother and myself would all get into a match with one ticket including all ireland finals. Compared to now a days one ticket per person.

Sounds dodgy nowadays but they reckoned a rub from the seventh son of a seventh son could curd wringworm. I went to school with one of them and to this day we still call him Doc.

England and Ireland played in Calgary in 1990 and Limerick and Tipp played in LK the same day. MOM was the commentator and he said he went to Limerick the night before and called into various hostelries to sample the atmosphere. He said memorably that all the talk in the pubs was about the upcoming game and 'it was not the one in Calgary'

I remember it well. I was on the sideline, second row, in front of the Hogan Stand. Got drowned and had to drive back to Mullingar in the wet clothes.

Replying To Ulsterman:  "Hunger Strikes parades; RUC/UDR harassment going to and from games; players & officials being murdered; clubhouses being attacked and burned down; trying to get a pitch to play on; Unionists & Loyalists protesting about ANYTHING to do with the GAA. I make these points only to highlight how certain memories of the GAA from the 1980s mean different things to different Gaels on the island."
Yes - and we thought that was normal. I remember thumbing a lift home from college in the 80s and having a heated discussion with the Unionist fella who gave me a lift. He was convinced that the GAA was nothing but a front for the RA, and that training sessions involved AK47s. An intelligent and decent bloke, but he was dead sure of that. Quite the chat we had lol.

But to this day, the GAA is the best nationality / sense of belonging i ever had. Practically, you couldn't day to day participate in the southern state, and you were obviously alienated from the in-your-face Britishness of the northern state. So you kind of belonged nowhere. Apart from the GAA. The feeling you got when you saw your team take the pitch was a 100% feeling, this was something you were 100% part of. I still feel that way.

On a lighter note, I remember nonsense announcements being handed in to the half-time announcer at Clones. The poor lad would read out anything. Somebody who was a very early and careful parker would have their number plate read out for "causing an obstruction, and to attend urgently". Or 2 neighbours who had fallen out and who hadn't spoken in years, asking "[ ] to meet his friend [ ] at the commentary box" etc. The announcer got wise to it eventually though.
