Jarlath Burns in the match programme for today's All-Ireland SHC final between Cork and Tipperary writes: "There is a necessary and timely conversation to be had about the structure of our senior hurling championship, specifically regarding the Joe McDonagh Cup finalists entering the All-Ireland series through a preliminary quarter-final." legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9059 - 20/07/2025 15:12:29 2626638 Link 0 |
Looks like there's a change or two on the way so.

I'm entitled to express an opinion even a tongue-in-cheek one. How did ye do in Liam and Sam the year?!!?? Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2558 - 20/07/2025 21:39:13 2626743 Link 1 |
Looks like It but what are they Going to do to help Mcdonagh counties to get to the Next level. They waffle on about growing Hurling none more so thank the current Uachtarainn but it's all red herring stuff.Every Mcdonagh county is trying to get to the next level but none of them have the financial resources of a Limerick Tipp or Cork so when they do scrap the preliminary quarter finals let's see the number of coaches they will finance. We are listening Jarlath. You talk a lot but let's see some action.

When Leinster has 6 counties competing and the McDonagh has 6 counties competing, if the preliminary quarter finals are dropped - there doesn't seem to be a standout reason to have the McDonagh final any later than the Leinster final. Maybe they might want a game every second week. Haven't heard much calling for any changes around that. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9059 - 21/07/2025 07:59:24 2626781 Link 0 |
Why is it necessary? There's nothing wrong with a prelim quarter final

Has it had its day? With the new Division 1B, that's a good level. Down and Kildare will be in Division 1B next year alongside Clare, Wexford and Dublin.

Let's just look at this year. If you were a Kildare hurler, would you rather finish your campaign on the high of winning the Joe McDonagh Cup Final in Croke Park, or the low of a 21-point defeat the following week? Or if you were a Laois hurler - bad enough to suffer the disappointment of a ten-point defeat in the McDonagh Cup Final. What's to be gained from then suffering a 23-point defeat in another match? The term "preliminary quarter final " is an insult to humanity.

If it were me I'd be happy to have a free shot at one of the 'top tier' teams. One of these days a mcdonagh cup team will catch a 'top tier' team on the hop in the prelim. I think the winning team should get a shot at it, whatever about the losing mcdonagh team. imo it is another widening of the gap between the elites and the have nots. This current tiered system will not bring a new hurling team into the top tier, and the same applies for tiered football. It isn't working boxtyburgerbuns (Leitrim) - Posts: 515 - 21/07/2025 11:00:15 2626814 Link 0 |
There's everything wrong with it. It's unfair on so many levels

I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of format changes! legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9059 - 21/07/2025 11:08:35 2626817 Link 0 |
You are correct, our Uachtaráin is a businessman first and foremost and he seems to run headquarters well, secondly, he is a football man through and through as for promoting our hurling games I'm not convinced it's in his list of priorities. While the McDonagh competition is not perfect, however personally I rate it very highly, out of its group of counties it almost produces a different winner every year out of a different pairing. Supplementary financial support is put in place by some counties to assist / support the main sponsor if nothing else. Financial support from HQ is becoming less and less the norm in particular to finance the small ball code. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3232 - 21/07/2025 11:38:55 2626827 Link 1 |
I agree. It's a term that's used in club hurling here in Wexford as well, in Leinster minor and U20 competitions, and probably several other places too. What'd be wrong with just calling it "Round 1 knockout" ? The actual quarter-finals aren't called "preliminary semi-finals". And semi-finals aren't called "preliminary finals". Why do we have this makey-uppy term for the round before quarter-finals? Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3000 - 21/07/2025 11:39:31 2626828 Link 1 |
The new 2026 football format, which is basically the good old fashioned Christy Ring Cup format, will have Round 3 before the quarter finals. No more of that "preliminary quarter finals" talk. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 9059 - 21/07/2025 13:13:28 2626875 Link 0 |

I don't want to go down that rabbit hole either but I strongly disagree with extending the competition to 8 teams. It's ultra competitive as it is but you'll dilute that if you increase to 8. For me what makes it, a bit like Munster hurling championship, is the fact there's no breathing room in it, with all games (usually) fierce close contests and no game in ever be taken for granted in it. The finest of margins decides not just games but final group places - the Carlow Leix finale being a perfect example. You seem to be very very keen to have semi-finals in it and that seems to be your argument for making it 8 but I don't see why as I think we'd lost more than we'd gain by having top 4 into semis. I'd leave as it is. Drop the prel. quarter for beaten finalist for sure but winner should get a crack at the third team inn Leinster or Munster. The kildare bad experience is given but looks at the crowd they drew in early for that on a wet day - it has to be good for growing the game. Not saying it should be expanded to 8 teams, but fear of one sided games is a bit of a red herring in my opinion. In the 2025 Munster Championship, there was a 16 point win & a 13 point win. The 5 tier structure in hurling is in place for a number of years now and surely the goal should be to get more teams to step up to MacCarthy level via the lower tiers? If the 5 tier system is still there in ten years will it be a success for hurling? slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6526 - 22/07/2025 14:24:20 2627171 Link 0 |
