Marty - a bit of a national treasure

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Before yesterday's Munster final Marty Morrissey walked past the Mackey Stand on his way to do his commentary job. He was swarmed by people looking for pics & autographs. He obliged every single person who asked, all in good humour and chatting away to kids (I had two with me) who were beaming to see him.

After the game his piece for the Sunday game covering the celebrations was the same - good humoured, good natured and for Marty, a Clare man, to be so humble and to create such a fun atmosphere for people to participate in, well he's nothing short of a legend really.

I was at the Clare v Kilkenny U21 final in Croker in 2009 and he hosted a crossbar challenge competition there which he made great craic. He seems to have a way of creating fun around everything. He makes time for people, he respects them and he's also an interesting person to listen to with his ideas on GAA & sport in general. He's a good man to host a debate about GAA too and his radio shows are always wort listening to.

In an era where pundits like to create a bit of controversy with comments, is Marty just a National treasure?

He is certainly by a far a nicer person and a more positive contributor to the GAA and all that goes with it than the chap who made a nasty personal attack on him. Something that appeared to have genuinely hurt him by all accounts.

I'd agree with this. I've met him on a few occasions, not only at matches and he comes across as very decent person and well able to have a bit of craic too.

Have met and dealt with Marty a few times myself, and he's a real pleasure.

And while that personal attack was outrageous, he at least has a sense of humour about such things at other times. Anyone remember his appearance on The Podge & Rodge Show?

He would be more than welcome presenting the Sunday game.

All GAA commentators annoy me in various ways.

He's as good as what's out there, now. At least he knows the clubs that the players are from, and something about the localities those clubs are in. He seems to know Ireland like the back of his hand. Not many good up n coming commentators. Thought Martin Kiely from Limerick had potential but he seems to have disappeared from the airwaves.

I'm just curious as to why a few posters find him annoying?? What's wrong with people throwing up and posting every thought that comes into their head?? If he annoys you then keep that to yourself. He's never put a foot wrong in his whole career. You do realise that he could easily read your comments?? He's an absolute gentleman and does not deserve lazy thoughtless comments.

The speed (especially in hurling) that he can identify players and throw up stats is a joy to behold. He flows with the game and adds so much to it. Listening to him full flow in a hurling game is a joy. Whenever he retires we will look back and realise that yes he was an absolute treasure. To Slayer who started this post well good minds think alike!!

Marty isn't the greatest commentator, makes a few mistakes, mightn't mind his Ps and Qs like some people would prefer. But I don't think he pays any heed to what anyone thinks about him which is what makes him great. Comfortable in his own skin and the life and soul of the party. He's such craic that he's the kinda GAA man you'd love to be sitting beside at a match as ye shout and roar for yer respective teams. A gentleman and of of the best things about the GAA.

This a public forum, where people are free to give their opinions. That's the point of a forum. Should we ban all negative comments about commentators, players and coaches, and only allow comments that praise them?
That's what you get in totalitarian states, where all comments and opinions that don't agree with the general consensus are suppressed, and the people who make them imprisoned or worse.
I don't like Marty as a commentator, that's my opinion, OK?

Marty has grown on me in recent times and he's not the worst commentator either, he seems a really nice guy and great craic as well.

Strangely enough I enjoy his radio commentary, but not his television commentary,, I don't know why tbh, his passion for the games seems to come out more (to me anyway) on the radio.

It's not a public forum. Look up the meaning of the word public. If it were public you would need to put your name address and picture on here so you can be identified and then you can say what you like. But at the moment only one person is identified which is Marty and he doesn't have a choice in this. So that's just damn unfair on the man!!
One poster started this post to give a man credit.. Why didn't you start the post then instead of negating good comments??
You are a long way from a totalitarian state here my friend. This is not politics.

Marty is an ok commentator and an awful lot better than who done the Leinster hurling final on Sunday… was it Ger Canning…? He didn't even know which team was which….! I would say Marty took what Joe Brolly said with a pinch of salt and it didn't upset him one bit…. I'd say he'd be a good character to have a few pints with if he drinks at all that is….
