Why Are RTÉ Not Showing The Div 1&2 League Final Live?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'' admit I've never watched sporting commentary in a language I don't understand, but does the language really matter all that much when you're watching the match on telly? The commentators don't translate the names of the players, after all, and you can pick up the names of the counties handily enough. What do you find you are missing?

For those of you who do not understand Irish, Dublin and Mayo won the leagues today

Tg4 are the primary channel for the league. They knock out 3 live matches each weekend as part of the agreement. I'm sure that agreement would fall apart if you took the final away! And if you put it on the table, you may as well try to give the biggest kick in the n*ts
I don't have a clue of the Irish language but have always enjoyed the main commentator

Can all broadcasters please refrain from showing R Gallagher at any time on the sideline? I've had to watch him spit on his hands about 50 times today and struggled through my Sunday dinner as a result. Disgusting.

I suppose the best way to answer that is to watch an Ireland soccer or rugby international or a premiership game with the sound turned off.. Good luck with selling that one.

I agree totally. This was never about depriving TG4. But reality is that most people enjoy the experience much more when it's in English

I got an honour in Irish in the Leaving and I can only follow the outline of what's being said. Imagine if the commentary for the All Ireland Final was only in Irish. It would totally diminish the enjoyment for viewers who mostly wouldn't understand what was being said."
I'd rather listen as gaeilge than listen to Marty Morrisey or Ger Canning any day, TG4 is a brilliant station the only one I wouldn't mind paying a licence fee to support,
RTE seem only interested in English soccer and rugby.

True, I don't know how anyone can shake his hand after all that spitting, I see him then pawing the sideline officials back regularly as he leans in to chat, he'd put you off your grub alright.

What is this thread about, someone that started watching the game this year and not knowing league finals are on TG4?

First of all I wouldn't say that's the equivalent, because no commentary is different from commentary in a language you don't understand. You can tell what is happening by the tone, volume, pace etc. of the commentator's speech, even if you don't understand the words. And you can hear the reactions of the crowd too. After all, if you're watching a match in person you have no commentary track to help you along, you just focus on the players.

But I have to say, even without the sound turned on, a good sporting event will still be watchable. You'll miss the crowd and the excitement of the commentator etc. but the skills on show will still be there.

Spoken like a true Longford man lol.

I did O-level Irish in 1982, agus tá sé thart fa go léir caite agamsa anois, but have no difficulty following TG4's GAA coverage, despite my having learned Ulster (not Munster) Irish.

Instead of complaining about TG4 on behalf of Ireland's bleating squad of Irish language haters, why not try learning it?

Mór mo náir, mo clann féin.... srl

We have become a truly pathetic people when supposed Gaels are spouting some of the above. Last one out, Múch na soilse.

My question is, as a watcher from the Hill, was why did the interviewer change a conversation as Gaeilige with Con to English?

The rest of you, just renew your Sky Sports super sunday subs and leave the rest of us to die off in peace.

The second most important finals in football and it's in Irish. How on earth can the GAA and RTÉ not come up with better than this.. Talk about promoting our game. Its nothing short of laughable."
At least TG4 will show Louth matches not like RTE.

Great to see TG4 showing the League Final. TG4 also provides a very good analysis of the match. It is wonderful to see so many fluent Irish speakers. Is teanga bheo, saibhir an Ghaeilge.
