With all respect to TG4 and they do trojan work all year but don't those of us who don't speak Irish (the vast majority) deserve to watch & listen to the league finals in English? The second most important finals in football and it's in Irish. How on earth can the GAA and RTÉ not come up with better than this.. Talk about promoting our game. Its nothing short of laughable. You'll get good commentary on GBFM. Galwayspur (Offaly) - Posts: 233 - 02/04/2023 15:10:38 2468260 Link 0 |
Is it still April Fool's? TG4 give fantastic coverage throughout the league, bit unfair to then give final to RTE who don't bother with GAA coverage except for championship Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2139 - 02/04/2023 15:11:04 2468261 Link 24 |
I did say that TG4 do trojan work but RTÉ have covered league games this year. Most people don't speak Irish so the experience of watching a national final is greatly diminished. I'm sure there's a lot of people disappointed today not to be able to watch and listen in English. I'm not saying RTÉ deserve the final as they are abismal by times but surely GAA fans in their homes today deserve better than this .

I don't think for 1 minute this is the reasons it is done, but it is a good way to promote the Irish language through GAA. If your that badly stuck put the radio on and turn the volume of the TV down. farneygael (Monaghan) - Posts: 300 - 02/04/2023 15:40:29 2468271 Link 11 |
Is it still April Fool's? Do you know the words to the national anthem?

How much taxpayer's money has that Longford buck wasted that he can't understand simple Irish as used in a match commentary?

I agree only for TG4 GAA sport would be just RTE soundbites.

What.? He's right. Most Irish people don't speak Irish sufficiently well to understand the TG4 commentary. I got an honour in Irish in the Leaving and I can only follow the outline of what's being said. Imagine if the commentary for the All Ireland Final was only in Irish. It would totally diminish the enjoyment for viewers who mostly wouldn't understand what was being said.

TG4 have covered the leagues for years when RTE never bothered, let them have their bigger days for league finals. im no expert in irish but ive two good eyes and enough Irish to enjoy it and maybe remember a few words from school days when i hear them! Irish was difficult to learn especially if you are from Northern Ireland when we didn't learn it until secondary school. I think even if I did understand the language well I would still have a hard time understanding that commentator as it is a southern dialect. They seem to pronounce words very differently. People who know the words to the national anthem haven't a clue what they mean. They sing it in Irish and haven't a notion what they are singing about

Christ above.. Thank God I'm not on twitter if this is a flavour of it. You're right endgame if the Allireland was in Irish there would be an outcry. Sorry if I offended any of ye I was merely bring up a concern that many have on the game not in English. TG4 as I mentioned are a brilliant medium but unfortunately like many I dont know any Irish. What about "on mo direach", not going to hear that too much anyway.

Could tg4 have a option of English commentary on tg4 player. Like their coverage but like most the old Irish is bad Thejampot (Leitrim) - Posts: 354 - 02/04/2023 16:51:58 2468298 Link 0 |

RTÉ only have rights to Saturday games as far as I'm aware. TG4 were the ones showing League football for years, so let them at it for the finals as the main rights holders. Let them have their big day, they're brilliant for our sport, and who knows you'll learn a cúpla focail of our language too
