Under 17 Hurling

(Oldest Posts First)

Congrats to Clare on a fine win last night against reigning AI champs it was a horrible night for hurling Rain & Wind but both teams put in a good shift.

Clare are doing better underage last couple of years I suppose better structures down the line and good management are keys to this.

I wonder what the rush is in having all these games run off last nights match should have been postponed

It wasnt long ago there was a lot and doom and gloom after that Cork result and a lot of bad vibes coming out of the county re underage structures. Two top class back to back minor teams since so that was obviously over stated...

The condition in Dungarvan had to be seen to be believed. The pitch was water logged. You may as well have taken the teams to the beach and play some sort of water game. This is a horrible way to treat the young players of the future who have spent months preparation. Parents need to step in and say you are not going to be allowed put these kids at this unnecessary risk of injury. Both team managements should be ashamed of themselves for allowing their teams out in this. The referee did an amazing job and deserves to b complimented but it cannot be his call alone to proceed with this fiasco. Congrats to Limerick they just about shaded it.

Agree, Tiobraid. There was nothing between Clare and Tipp last year so with a bit of luck Clare could easily have ended up All-Ireland winners. Maybe this year...

Canuck I agree with you..no way should game of taken place..why was it left to s relatively new ref to decide on game going ahead??same as playing other game in Shannon where there is no covered accomadation and mostly a grassy bank to stand on..also players would have had to get out of school early and I don't know what time they'd have got back home..what is hurry with playing the 17/20 championships ?

The players did their best. Yes there was a few yellow cards on both sides but these were mainly due to the conditions rather than anything sinister. It should not have started but call it off when you are throwing it in every minute. A Waterford player swiped at the ball on one occasion to try and move it and just about took the head off the Limerick kid because the hurley flew out of his hand. The ref like I said was good but the most important thing for him on the night was to follow the instructions and make sure no one got away with anything that smelled like a thrown ball. Also too many steps was a directive. A limerick player blown twice for this and all they were doing was trying to get around the melee on the ground in front of them. That might sound contradictory about his performance but not as it was obvious he had certain instructions from some arm chair referee administrator.

The referee is the man responsible whether the match proceeds or not due to the playing surface. It is clear the match should not have gone ahead. The referee should be asked why he deemed that surface playable for 16 and 17 year olds.
