The top 2 teams in Division 3 sit above the bottom 2 teams in Division 2 in the Sam Maguire pecking order. So if Westmeath reach the Leinster Final, the team that tops Division 3 (or comes second if Westmeath top it) will then qualify for Sam Maguire. Interesting that teams are obviously taking the football league a lot more seriously than we can expect with the top division in hurling. The threat of losing senior status in championship has obviously exercised minds, even in Division One where avoiding relegation is far more important than previously. Division Two is going to be very interesting. Be some battle to fight for survival and I wouldn't be surprised to see an unexpected former elite county getting dragged into a dog fight. Clare's win over Louth was crucially important. 6th in Division 2 is the All-Ireland safety line. If one or two lower league counties, outside of Leitrim or Sligo, make the provincial finals, 5th or 4th in Division 2 will be the All-Ireland safety line. What is clear is that the competition should no longer be called the All Ireland. You have the secondary competition (which is better btw) deciding what counties can compete in the latter stages of the premier competition. No reason why Leitrim cant get to a provincal final, people need to stop moaning and get on with it. A group of Leitrim,Sligo,London,New York is not the hardest route in getting to Group All Ireland stages , three Div 4 teams and a Non League team ?? Provincial finalists still qualify for the All-Ireland series. Watched a few games this weekend and my hope is that the referees will speed up the restarts. Some goalies taking a lifetime to kick out the ball. Some free takers taking almost a minute to take a free. Add it all up there's a lot of dead time in the game. All-Ireland just means a competition is open to all counties across the island. Those counties can still be split into grades hence Senior, Intermediate, and Junior. That isn't the issue, of course we could make a provincial final this year. Some free takers act like they're kicking penalties and conversions. I like the new system although the 2nd and 3rd place preliminary round after the round Robin could be done without. Bottom line is if you are good enough to be in the Sam Maguire you will qualify through your Provincial championship or the league. You have two chances at it really if you are a Division 2 side and Division 3 teams similarly can get there via their Provincial.
