Hurling - Mind The Gap

(Oldest Posts First)

March 11/12 AHL Rd 4
March 18/19 AHL Rd 5
March 25/26 AHL Semi-finals
April 1/2 AHL Div 2 & 3 Finals
April 8/9 McDonagh Rd 1
April 15/16 McDonagh Rd 2
April 22/23 McDonagh Rd 3
A hurling league division 2 semi-finalist will be playing over 7 weekends in a row. There should at least be one rest weekend between the league and McDonagh Cup starting.
The McDonagh finalists will have two rest weekends before the preliminary quarter-final. One rest weekend would be enough. The McDonagh Cup should be pushed back one week.
The GAA have gone from McDonagh finalists having 1 week of preparation for the preliminary quarter-finals to 3 weeks of preparation. 2 weeks of preparation would suffice.
The McDonagh final will be on May 27/28. The Ring/Rackard/Meagher finals will be on June 3/4. June 3/4 would be a suitable weekend for the McDonagh final. This would allow a gap between the league final and start of the McDonagh.

Makes sense. 1 week isn't enough.

Correct. Longford hurlers played their last league group game then played league semifinal, then the final, then 1st round of Lory Meagher, all on consecutive weekends. I think they played 7 weekends in-a-row before having a weekend off. No top tier county would be expected to do this!!

Longford played 6 weekends in row, not 7, in 2022. All top tier counties will play at least 4 weekends in a row, some 5, during the season. Plus most of them play more games than Longford did last season. I'm not agreeing with the tight fixture schedules. But your comparison between the lower and top counties playing schedules is not appropriate.

Only McDonagh Cup teams can be affected this year. It would not happen to top tier counties as you say.
The McDonagh and Ring finals could precede the U20 final on June 3/4. The Meagher and Rackard finals could precede the Leinster final on June 10/11.

Top tier hurling counties have much deeper squads to be playing 4 consecutive weekends than the likes of Longford playing 6 weekends in-a-row, wouldn't you say?

More evidence that inter county is almost regarded as something to be gotten out of the way as quickly as possible, especially at the less glamourous end.

There is no benefit in lower tier teams playing so many games so close together. In some counties I suspect that will mean players will opt not to bother with it at all and concentrate on preparation for the club championship.

Don't mind saying I don't know myself. Top tier counties would generally be operating with squads of around 30 to 35 during peak time, with probably 20 or a little more of them expecting to see regular action.

How many would be in the Longford (or similar county) squad during their busy time?

Longford had less than 25 on the panel last season.

20 to 25 would be my guess but the difference is depth within the county. Longford only has 3 hurling clubs.

It is madness that a Division 2 semi-finalist will be playing on 7 consecutive weekends.

May 27/28 Joe McDonagh Final and U20 hurling final.
June 3/4 Ring, Rackard and Meagher finals.
June 10/11 Munster and Leinster finals.
June 17/18 Hurling Preliminary Quarter-finals.

The McDonagh final should be on the weekend of June 3/4. This way there can be a weekend off between the league finals and the start of the McDonagh.
