The Rise Of Antrim Hurling

Antrim had a competitive league. While their main goal is to retain provincial status, they can cause some upsets and qualify for the preliminary quarter-finals.

Hopefully not at Dublin's expense! They have an unfavourable draw. Be maybe fancied to beat Westmeath, and a reasonable chance against Dublin but hard to see them getting close to the other three especially as they are away to Galway and Wexford. They give anyone a game in Belfast.

Antrim are home to Dublin first. If they are quietly confident of causing some upsets they will target Dublin at home. If they do cause an upset there and bring that form to Wexford they will really set the cat amongst the pigeons!

Antrim will definitely fancy their chances against Dublin in Corrigan Park and certainly could spring an upset. Westmeath showed last year that the second tier counties can take points from the bigger teams so Antrim can certainly hope to get at least a draw against Dublin and/or Wexford. However, I suspect Westmeath v Antrim on the last day will be a relegation play-off, which is quite unfair for both counties. It would be great to see Antrim competing in all of their games but getting close in the league and getting close in the championship are two entirely different prospects.

I don't understand how they'd be fancied to beat Westmeath to be honest, we performed as well as them but in a harder group of the league, and also minus a lot of quality players through injury etc.

You will note my use of the word "maybe."

I have no idea of what Westmeath are like this year and only saw them against ourselves last year. Will depend on the earlier games, but I'd say Antrim be slight favourites. Even just for the fact that they survived without a play off and beat Laois by more. But little in it probably.

Antrim have been consistently closer to the top teams in recent years. That's influencing the perception. Westmeath are in Leinster for a second consecutive year and have Division 1 experience this year. Reasons to be confident to be fair.

Looking forward to the trip to Corrigan Park next Sat in anyways.

Hopefully Antrim haven't risen too far before then, they can rise all they want after that.

We should have beaten Dublin today. We just can't close some of these games out whether through self belief or tiredness I don't know. We're making improvements but we really need to start winning these games. Had a look over on another Dubs website, my goodness the arrogance rips right through some of them. They are raging they didn't beat a "Joe McDonagh team" who they "should be horsing by 20 pts". The self entitlement from many of the Dublin fanbase is nauseating.

You must spend your whole life looking for things to offend you!

Enjoy the result. Terrible result for ourselves and pretty much sums up where we are. As for the arrogance, any Dublin supporter commenting pre-match including myself predicted exactly this sort of disaster. And it is a disaster.

Good day for Antrim. terrible day for Dublin. Enjoy it.

Great game and probably left 2 points behind today rather than gained 1.

Great to see the step up antrim have made a lot of great Gaels up there. Hopefully you can get a few more results this year.

Perceived victimhood and self entitlement are pretty close aligned to one another, something for you to think about.

Possibly. Antrim were quietly confident of causing upsets. Wexford now is there best possibility of a major scalp to be fair. Wexford have been forewarned.

Antrim are unlikely to make the top 3 after today's defeat to Wexford but they aren't a million miles away. Westmeath will their big game now to retain provincial status.

We're definitely on the right track despite the Wexford defeat. Massive improvements have been made in preparing the squad for hurling at the top level physically but sometimes old habits are hard to shake off. Turn off a few minutes and you can be punished heavily but we don't drop the heads the way we used to. We are making massive strides at junior levels with a few good players about to break through. I'm positive for the future of Antrim hurling. Mark B+.

Your lads look in the best physical shape I've seen in 33 years of watching ye. Great mix of pace and power and great to see that lads up there are really giving intercounty a good shot. Good to see the lads staying out on the pitch despite losing as well. Neil Mcmanus posed for a pic with my youngest daughter. A real gentleman.

Antrim have been playing Division 1 hurling for three seasons in a row and managed to immediately bounce back to the Leinster Championship by winning Joe Mc last year, so I think based on this they are marginally favourites to beat Westmeath this year. However, as it's in Mullingar it'll be anyone's game and Westmeath could easily win.

Any advice on where to park near corrigan park? I'm heading to the Leitrim game from Dublin direction. Any advice would be appreciated.
