Paddy Lynch starting instead of Marty Reilly. Caoimhin McGovern takes the 13 jersey. McLoughlin on the bench, and swore I saw James Smith wearing a jersey out there, but isn't named. Could well be a change Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2466 - 26/02/2023 13:56:08 2460242 Link 0 |
Handy enough win. Lynch the difference with 10 points while still looking half fit, and bar when they drew level at 6 each, we were comfortable enough most of the way through. Still managed to leave a lot behind with at least 4 goal chances, but 21 points is good going any day. Our conditioning and fitness was far better, and they were blowing hard trying to keep up with us from early on. Great to see the bench being run, especially James Smith making a first appearance of the year, but he has a load of fitness to get back too. That'll come. In a good spot now out ahead and should be tested again v Down next weekend. Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2466 - 26/02/2023 18:28:29 2460390 Link 1 |
Very impressive at times today. Although it wasn't perfect, Cavan are becoming a very decent outfit. With G Mac to come in, with everyone fit, it will be an interesting dilemma to chose a forward line. O Neill, Cian Madden and McCabe all worked hard and would be disappointed if they were to be dropped. Boylan and Lynch showed well and took their scores well also. Conor Madden looks like he's beginning to believe in himself at this level again. Gerry Smith was excellent at times. Where do you play Mckiernan and who misses out? Also, Conor Smith and Oisin Brady shouldn't be forgotten either. Good to see Caoimhin Mcgovern back on the bench. After what's he's come through, I'd love for him to get a chance to shown what he can do. Fontofwisdom (Cavan) - Posts: 128 - 26/02/2023 18:56:07 2460403 Link 0 |
Another very good win but Offaly were well off the pace…. They had a decent first 20 minutes but offered nothing after that… Our defence was not under any real threat…. Our midfield was terrible and didn't field a single ball the whole match… just flapping at balls… we are going nowhere with this pairing… Our forwards took some very good points but some of the butchered goal chances were truly shocking and of junior B standard play… When we come up against a tight marking defence it will show us what our forward line is like… Offaly we're leaving huge gaps all over the place… Another 2 points against opposition not much better than Tipp or Longford ( no surprise that pair drew ) and a step closer to Div 2 which is the main thing… ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3809 - 27/02/2023 12:42:02 2460633 Link 0 |

The three teams we have left to play antrim have scored 6 goals Down have scored 8 goals and fermanagh have scored 5 goals cavan have scored 2 only longford with 0 goals have less than Cavan in division 3. Cavan will have to play super football to overcome any goal conceeded and this will be our downfall later in the summer. breffnibluewhite (Cavan) - Posts: 485 - 28/02/2023 21:11:40 2461065 Link 0 |
It's a pity we can't unearth a goal poacher ( ala Jason Reilly ) but I think it's a result of our reluctance under past managers down the years to play quick ball into our forward line… It's very hard to create a good goal scoring opportunity from negative slow build up play… We have created numerous chances in our opening 4 matches but only put away 2 which is very poor… Our points totals have been impressive but those sort of totals will not be available against stronger opponents and it's then we will see how our lack of goals will be costly….Here's hoping we stumble upon a reliable goal scorer soon…!!!

I think if we play GMc in full forward in the same way that Mayo are playing Aiden o Shea we will improve our goal scoring chances provided we let quick ball into him.

And how many goals have they conceded?

As I have said….it's all about quick ball into the forward line but will they do it even if Mc Kiernan was posted there…. Midfield is a huge problem for us also

We scored 1 goal in the first 4 games last year. We're over that already, albeit it only by one. Yes, it's a concern we've not more. But we are making the chances. We didn't take them on much v Longford, rather taking the points, but did take them on more v Offaly and left a fair few behind. But I wouldn't be hugely concerned. We've conceded two, and since the Westmeath game we've scored 19 points, 19, and 21. That's some going lads. Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2466 - 01/03/2023 11:39:09 2461150 Link 1 |
Yeah goals are important, probably worth more than three points. I think you can practice them too, particularly that side foot finish, passing it to the net like Gooch used to. 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 406 - 01/03/2023 15:01:17 2461222 Link 0 |
We may have scored 19, 19 and 21 points so far, but how many of them went over the black spot? Not good enough. Graham out Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12327 - 01/03/2023 15:20:56 2461232 Link 0 |
Anyone else listen to the podcast during the week ? Very interesting interview with Paddy Lynch. He was asked what the difference is this year and he put it down to James Burke and the influence he has had with his sessions. blueskies (Cavan) - Posts: 197 - 02/03/2023 16:54:03 2461464 Link 1 |
Yeah indeed I heard that. I said elsewhere that Burke seems to have made a huge difference, in bringing in with the top sides are doing. We look a far better proposition that last year, and our shape, fitness, and attack look a lot better. We finally do seem to have a quality background team alright which is great to see. Always thought we have the talent, and they're getting a tune out of them now

We had 22 of a back room team named in the programme for last year's Taltainn Cup Final but still couldn't get the job done…. I always think weak managers surround themselves with a huge number of back room staff to deflect attention from themselves …. We will see how things go when faced with tough opposition… We can only beat what's in front of us ( last 3 teams were woeful ) but I am not at all convinced with our midfield and our attack has got far too much space in these early games to be rightly judged… One thing I do believe is that our fitness levels have improved massively this season… Getting to Division 2 is the priority and so far we are on track… As regards Burkes influence on any improvement can be equally measured by Mayo's improvement's with the same guy leaving their set up..

Ah lad that last line is ridiculous. They've a whole new setup there. A change is scenery can be needed sometimes. Doesn't mean someone in the previous setup is brutal or anything. He was a coach with them getting to All Ireland finals. Can't knock that. We need the calibre of coaches like him. And yes less can be more. Doesn't need to be huge numbers, or next to none, but enough to cover what you need

Exactly loughduff lad, he was trainer with Mayo with horan, he was on ray Dempseys ticket also, he is highly rated.

Well I hope Cavan have relieved themselves of a lot of those 22 hangers on they had named for last season… absolutely no need for that many.. As Loughduff Lad said less can be more.. We do seem to be getting the ball forward more quickly this year which is good to see … Big game tomorrow.. a win and promotion is as good as secured ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3809 - 04/03/2023 08:01:08 2461694 Link 0 |
Well he seems to be good, and after getting rid of a certain someone, he has very good pedigree and the players seem to like him. Yeah indeed. With the way the game is these days, you will have lots of background staff once you account for coaches, physios, doctors and so on. As long as it's not too many coaches that players are not sure what is wanted. We seem to have hit a nice balance now Aye, think with the win we practically can't be caught on head to head or points difference. So wrap up promotion, get the weeks break, maybe try the squad v Antrim, and then build up to a tight game v Fermanagh as you're running close to Championship by then. Sunday game in Breffni in late March. Get the crowd on for a Championship feeling vs a near neighbour. Think we'll be set up nicely with a win tomorrow Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2466 - 04/03/2023 10:51:52 2461720 Link 0 |
