Agree with all of those except Wexford will be promoted from division 4! How about that for confidence!!!

You don't know much about the site or the plans itself let's be honest when you throw out 15 mil ... talking through your hat about things you haven't a clue about. As I've said... probably spent in the order of 11mil between Spawell & Hollystown with rental income still rolling in.... lots of funds to pay for it with 2mil in commercial income per annum."
I remember my first beer too a chara, enjoy.

Hopefully not but could be Monaghan's year to suffer.
They badly need tp freshen up the team and the new manager will have some choices to make.

If you're going to blather on about something, know what you're talking about.... fairly embarrassing that a Dub doesn't even know what's going on in their own county.

Hi,

New to this forum.

I will be in Ireland weekend of 4th Feb 2023.

I would like to watch a game of hurling within a reasonable travel distance form Dublin.

Below are the 2 I can see are just over an hours travel on the train, the first slightly more difficult due to the travel back to Dublin... Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Could anybody let me know what sort of attendance to expect at these games? Would love to take in a decent crowd.

Roinn 1 Group B
Tiobraid Árann v Laois, FBD Semple Stadium Thurles, 17:00
Roinn 2A
Ceatharlach v Cill Dara, Netwatch Cullen Park Carlow, 14:00

Many thanks
Jack

Hi Jack,

That match in Carlow would be far easier to get to and from all right, but realistically - and with no disrespect to either - Carlow v Kildare in Div. 2A is going to be fairly low-key and have only a small crowd.

Tipp v Laois is by far your better bet of those two then, but (and again with no disrespect!) is unlikely to be rocking either, as Tipp would generally be considered to be far stronger than Laois and so you may not see the sort of close and exciting game you'd be hoping for.

Two other options that weekend, although you wouldn't get to either of them by train from Dublin in anywhere near an hour, are:
Wexford v Galway - Saturday Feb 4 at 5 p.m. (under new floodlights in Wexford Park)
Waterford v Dublin - Sunday Feb 5 at 2 p.m. (Walsh Park, Waterford)

Both involve teams more evenly matched, and in smaller venues too, so that a crowd of maybe 7,000 to 10,000 would generate a better atmosphere than in a 45,000 capacity stadium like Thurles.

Hope you find something to suit anyway, and that you get a good match there!

if you've the time to travel down Cork and Limerick on the Saturday night should draw the biggest crowd, after that I'd say Wexford vs Galway.

Thanks for the info, worth a look!

And what about the football? Which would you say are the go-to fixtures that weekend?

It is a stag do I am organising so trying to get some sports in, we are in Dublin Fri-Monday, however ideally would do the trip there and back in a day.

45k at Thurles, how many do they usually get filling that?! Fair size that!

Thanks
Jack

When you say small crowd for Carlow… how small are we talking 1-200 or 1-2,000?

Thanks

Hi Jack.
I Agree with the other posters comments on NHL games convenient to rail access from Dublin.
Hard to pick a standout game with reasonable attendance, and convenient to your travel schedule.
If there are standout league games, they will be shown on TG4, an Irish language channel, don't worry about the commentary, you can just enjoy the match, without having to travel from your base.
I think the hurling leagues commence in February, a week later than the football league. Hope you enjoy your visit.

Most appealing looking football game is Armagh v Mayo, athletic grounds seems to lent itself to a good atmosphere.

Can't say for sure, but personally, I'd be guessing no more than 600 to 800 for a Carlow v Kildare hurling match in the League at the start of February. Apologies if I'm doing Carlow or Kildare a disservice with that!

None of the football fixtures really stand out in terms of what you're looking for either, particularly with regard to travel there and back from Dublin.

If it's a stag do, I'd have to suggest you maybe park the idea, and try find something else instead. Much as I'd like to think that the Wexford v Galway match on the Saturday evening (for example) will be a good occasion and a good match, I'm not sure that if I was an ordinary punter going to Dublin for a stag weekend, that I'd want to spend most the day travelling "down the country" for a match I might not have any particular interest in, and then travelling back up again.

There's a big horse racing meeting in Leopardstown that weekend (on both the Saturday and Sunday). Also greyhound racing in Shelburne Park every Saturday night. Either of those might suit a stag party instead, and unlike a hurling or football match, the lads you're with could have a few pints at them too.
