I agree they underperformed I watched the game. I've seen most of those players from underage upwards on several occasions. The way they performed this year was far closer to their ability. At the same time Kildare were no pushovers and on the day deserved to win. Those u21 Kilkenny sides were OK. But only OK. We lost to Antrim and the Munster counties. But in general watching Kilkenny v Wexford underage games there isn't a great deal between the teams most years. And that's over the last good few years. Mentality and preparation would probably have been the biggest difference. And size to a lesser extent. Certainly not stickwork or hurling ability. It is funny how many look on these results as the demise of Wexford or who ever is beaten by a supposedly weaker county. "A sure it was a weak Wexford team." Rather that giving the credit to Kildare. I know you credited Kildare at the time.

Actually I think the two tiers are going to be run as separate groups with qualifiers and play offs etc. So Kerry will be guaranteed games against other tier one counties. It is an interesting grade. Last year as Viking said, there were some odd results. Dublin beating Cats then getting beaten by Wexford and then Offaly. Wexford beating Dublin then losing to Cats, Cats beating Wexford and losing to Laois as did Wexford so two tier two teams in final! Offaly were clearly the best team having said all that and won all four games and arguably unlucky to lose AI final to last second goal. Think i noticed was that while physicality - as well as skill of course - had been determining factor in recent times, that Offaly with Pilkington playing a key role were more old style. Very fast and skilful. Dublin looked like they were going to hammer them in first quarter and Offaly ran rings around them for rest of game. That was an excellent Offaly team all the way up from u13.

Seems like any time Offaly get a good team (every 15-20 years or so?), people wax lyrical about how shhkillful they are. The last good bunch they had (circa 1994-1998) got credited with reinventing ground hurling no less.

Classic Offaly style too as might be expected given the men on the line. Good to see people who while ticking all the boxes in terms of fitness and aggression although they were a significantly smaller team than any of the ones I saw them play, place the emphasis on developing ball skills.

Yes, that Kildare team came very close to making a major breakthrough. They only lost by 4 points to Wexford in the 1976 Leinster semi-final and Wexford went on to win Leinster in '76 and '77. They also just missed out on promotion to division 1A on scoring difference in 1975 to Galway who went on to win the league and beat Cork in the all-Ireland semi-final that year. That was the start of the Galway revival that led to winning 3 all-Irelands in the '80s. Kildare have been showing steady improvement at all levels in recent years and seem to have good structures in place. It would be great to see them getting into the Leinster senior championship and being competitive within a few years. Gaillimh_Abu (Galway) - Posts: 1033 - 17/12/2022 21:09:31 2450631 Link 0 |
As i probably said before, I was in Aughrim when Kildare beat Dublin in Leinster quarter final in 1976. 3 - 9 to 0 - 9. Mick Holden and the P.J and Vinnie were playing for Dublin who'd also been competitive in league for a few years and had one close enough game with the Cats in championship. Kildare were then narrowly beaten by a very good Wexford team that were only denied All Ireland both years by one of the great Cork teams. Pat Dunny and Tommy Carew were the big names on Kildare side, and both Railway Cup picks in hurling and football. Ardclough i think was the big Kildare senior club at time. Don't think Naas even had one, if memory serves? BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3516 - 18/12/2022 10:02:58 2450639 Link 0 |
Yes, Ardclough were the strongest team in Kildare at the time. Think they took one or two scalps in the Leinster senior club championship too?
