Replying To BigJoe14:  "Not good. Also not a very professional way of announcing it by the new sponsor. Why are Meath not capable of doing these basic things right? Looks like the sponsors logo is just glued onto it. Far to much going on with their logo."
The announcement fair enough. Even if Gordon Elliott jumped the gun it should have been done before Christmas to capitalise on that market. But regarding the sponsors logo, how is that Meath's fault. The sponsor is paying a lot of money and is supporting development squads too. They have to put whatever logo the sponsor wants on it I'd say

The problem with capitalizing on the Christmas market is having the product available to sell.

My guess is that O'Neills being O'Neills probably didn't have it ready for the Christmas market as lets be honest Meath Gaa wouldn't be high on their important customers list. We'd be a small fish in a very big pond.

Well thats a young progressive team lineup. Experimental but good sign of future talent coming through. Actual excitement for this year just to see if we can get some positivity going in the camp and get a good run in the champo while hopefully ironing out some of the year to year flaws we seem to be plagued with.

Anyone know who is not on the panel for definite? According to the Drogeda Independent the following from last year aren't on the squad this year:

Bryan Menton (unofficially retired)
Bryan McMahon
Eamon Wallace
Joey Wallace (long term injury)
Shane Walsh (taking year out)
Ethan Devine
James McEntee
Andy Colgan

Possibly other players who were on the fringes last year also aren't back.

The only lads from that list i'd be contacting to try change their mind would be Menton and Walsh. The rest have been good servants to Meath but IMO are more than replaceable in the squad without bringing down the quality.

Agree but I'd add eamon Wallace and have a look at him at wing back.

Agreed. The Shane Walsh one is disappointing. He was frustrating at times over the last two years but I'm not sure a year out is the answer. Arguably a more direct game plan, which might be employed this year, rather than a solely running game like the last few years, would suit him.

Easier said than done IMO. We over the last number of years have had more runners than kickers. James Mac COS the 2 wallaces Bryan McMahon Hickey Keoghan Shane Mac Ronan Jones B Menton.

All athletic who like to run with the ball or run on to the ball. Don't think long accurate kicking is a strong point for any of these lads. Dathi McGowan Matt Costello I think would have good technique but we are not blessed with a lot of them.

Agree. There just not in the county. Looking forward to seeing what emerges tomorrow night. Now we won't have much of a test as Carlow are perhaps one of the worst teams in country , we really should be using it as shooting practice. Looking forward to seeing how lynch gets on and is he our answer to in the forward line. On another note One strange remained who I will not name) when you see what is gone but that's obviously due to loyalty about club. However if he doesn't perform now he never will, let's hope he relays the management faith in his ability that so far at county level he has failed to produce.

I think thats one of the reasons COR is bringing in these new lads...i.e. to play more of a kicking game. Hes been pretty open about that too

Fair enough but I don't see too many top class kickers in the lads he's bringing in. Hopefully I am wrong but I don't see the style changing massively . Not because COR doesn't want to but because of the personal available .

Best of luck to Colm, Stephen, Bårry, Paul, Eugene and the rest of the back room team tonight. A new journey starts and best wishes to everyone involved. This group of players carried over from 2022 have a chance to kick on and show themselves in a brighter light, free of the "shackles" they supposedly played under at times last year.

I see some are already whinging about selections and not a ball kicked. Give the manager and team a chance to at least play a game. Brian Conlan a lad barely out of minor was a stand out in both Simonstowns championship wins in 16&17 and a trusted lieutenant under Colm O'Rourke. Let's at least give them the courtesy of a game before the b*t*hing starts.

These 3 games are about assessing players and seeing if they fit into what Colm and his team want and need. I could care less for results in these if we start seeing some development in the style of play, patterns of play, fitness and strength improvements and some of the many annual problems being resolved around kick out strategies, free taking etc.

Seems Bryan Menton has moved on and best wishes to him. He owes the county nothing. I spoke to some one close to Bryan McMahon over the weekend and he's taking time away from the set up, so talk of being dropped is wide of the mark. Dunno anything about anyone else, as I say I'm never one for acting as an in the know, I've no ties or inside information from the camp, unlike some on here.

Great to see many young lads getting a chance (7 debutants) or second chance (Campion, Lenihan). Despite what many will say there's talent within the county, and hopefully Colm and his team makes them better than the sum of their parts. It won't happen overnight and will take a couple of years. I'm sure we'll see a few more debuts and returning players over the next two games too, to get ready for the league. As Colm said he intends working with a big panel so lads in form will get a chance.

Best wishes to the everyone for 2023. So long as we stay in division 2 and do reasonably well in the championship and the team develops and shows improvement I think that's all we can ask for.

Happy 2023 to all posters on the Hoganstand forum.

Great to see new season up and running and the very best of luck to all involved. As you say OB Cup is about having a look at lads and trying to put a bit of shape to our game going forward. Agree, its a bit early to be questioning players before they even kick a ball, ability has to be judged on the here and now, not on how they fared under previous management. As for not having "kickers" In the panel, its the most basic skill in the game and one all panel members need to master. Not expecting 15 Trevor Giles however, plenty of talent within squad to mix and match our style. Over reliance on the short game got us nowhere in the last few years. So at a minimum would expect an improvement in this area together with kickouts and freetaking.

Good question. I see some getting hot and heavy over players who have been tried again and again and failed. Now I'm all for giving them another chance. However 2 years ? No
