It's just term that means so little that it's impossible to even pin down how it's wrong. What's the measure of "Substance" of an All Ireland title? Can it be quantified in advance or is it just a term you make up afterwards? Is there a list of All Ireland's that meant a lot and those that meant nothing? It reminds me a bit of 10-15 years ago when the Dublin hurlers were starting to come good and beating the established teams. There seemed to be a rash of "Yes Dublin are good but they just don't have that magic or natural spark. You either have it or you don't" Nobody could measure this innate magic, or tell us what it looked like or what effect it had, but one thing was for sure; Dublin didn't have it, despite them beating many of the counties who supposedly do have it. Coming at it from a Tyrone view, the 2005 championship was nerve wrecking in nearly all matches. Started off slow and nearly lost to Cavan, replay needed, then lost to Armagh in replay for Ulster final, got over Dublin after another replay then Armagh again and finally got over Kerry in All Ireland final. 10 matches in total and everyone a honour to be there. What would be peoples thoughts on winning an all Ireland despite having lost a game, in the provincials? I remember a kilkenny man (forget his name) saying on the Sunday game once that they felt that it wasn't a real all Ireland if you had lost a game. Kilkenny had lost two games prior to meeting Limerick in the final and if Kilkenny had won I'm sure than man would think it was one of the sweetest wins ever. The begrudgery is out there folks. When we won on 03, it was down to "puke football" and doing un-GAA stuff like swarm defending. Of course, now that everyone else has adopted a similar defensive approach, there's not a word about it. Tyrone's win last year was of course similarly downplayed. The dominant narrative was that Kerry and Mayo lost it, rather than Tyrone won it. Pat Spillane said recently that, last year v Tyrone, Kerry had an off day, and "didn't show up". That is, the result had little to do with Tyrone, Kerry just didn't "show up". As for the final, well, Tyone won mainly because, remarkably, Mayo had an off day too, and missed lots of scores they normally would have got. The fact that Tyrone may have pressured the life out of them is overlooked. As the ever-gracious Martin Breheny said in March this year, writing in a national newspaper, Tyrone were "accidental champs, gifted the throne". In other words, a cheap all Ireland for Tyrone, who just got lucky in that their semi-final and final opponents both played well below their normal standards. It's almost as if Tyrone are unacceptable at the top table, and you can sense the relief when we're knocked out of the championship. I love this, and pray that the begrudgery continues. He was the real deal." Moynihan was unreal. Not the biggest man but had a great leap. Strong as a horse fast and a great reader of the game.
