Are Galway The Best Overall GAA County In The Last Number Of Year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A question I have is Galway the best pound for pound GAA county in the country.

This year so far Galway have reached the semifinals in senior football and hurling , minor hurling, and the final in minor football.

The Camogie team are current AI and league champions, and undefeated in championship 2022.

The Ladies footballers are competitive...

That's not to mention that both Camogie and Ladies Football senior club champions are from Galway.

This is on the back of a number of years off being competitive in most competitions across all codes and probably winning at least one all Ireland each year over the last 10 years.

I know some people will say KK or Dublin win way more at senior level, but Dublin haven't won a hurling title in years
and year and KK dont really play football.

I would say the only other contenders are Offaly, Tipp or Clare.

I would be interested in peoples thoughts...

Just a small point- you mention Tipp and Clare. Funny that. as Limerick knocked each of them out the Munster Championship in both Hurling and Football, although we would be behind each of them in both the Ladies Codes.

First of all may I congratulate Galway on their great victory yesterday. On your view on this topic I'm afraid imo Dublin are ahead of Galway and then maybe Cork too. You mention all gaa so don't forget Dublin have been the dominant force in senior football for a decade in both men's and ladies football winning several senior all irelands
Also Dublin have won a hurling league and a Leinster title in the last decade. In the last 20 years Galway have one senior hurling win and no football. Cork have won both hurling and football v senior in last 20 years aswell as Ladies and underage all Irelands at minor and u20 etc. I don't think Offaly Clare and Tipp are close to Galway either. Over the last 20 years I would rate top 3 in 1.Dublin.2.Cork 3 Galway

By my calculations Galway have won 46 national titles since 2000.This includes seniors league titles underage all ireland club all-irelands and ladies all Ireland's across all codes.Even Dublin or Cork would have done well to surpass that in the last 20 years.for example Galway clubs across both codes have won 14 all Ireland's in that time frame.

Sometimes 2 or 3 all Ireland's in a year.in 2011 Galway did the treble at underage all Ireland's beating Dublin in both minor and u 20 finals and beating Cavan in the u 21 football final.cant see Dublin or cork even having won the treble maybe the double underage in same year.portumna athenry clarinbridge st Thomas's corofin and salthill have all won all Ireland's since 2000.

To be fair, if you take womens football, camoige, undergage football and hurling as well as senior I would imagine we are.

However I would prefer to be the best at one of the majors rather than a jack of all trades!!

Don't think anyone from Kilkenny or Dublin would swap what they have won for what you have won this millennium. Tbh I'd say that would go for Limerick, Cork, Tyrone, Kerry and Tipp too.

Yeah, we are the beshht! We've had so much success this year that I'm actually looking forward to getting bet on Sunday. Have to stay at home the odd Sunday like! It's been hard to process such relentless success in both codes, in the newly condensed format, so I'll be speaking to my therapist about that.

Thankfully there is no formula for determining the most successful counties because it doesnt really matter, there is no prize for it. For sure Galway and Cork are the 2 counties that are most regularly competitive in all 4 codes and at under age and club level , but their lack of success in senior hurling and football relative to other counties detracts significantly from that.
And even if you were to accept that Dublin , Cork , Galway have the best spread , I wouldn't go crowing about it - these counties are well resourced in terms of population so I would say that all 3 of us are under achieving relative to smaller counties.

As a Galway man, as far as I'm concerned they haven't won much in what counts, i.e. Liam or Sam, so I would completely disagree with your assertion. Yes they won Liam in 2017 and Sam in 1998 & 2001, so three All Irelands in the last 24 years. Not bad, but nothing worth getting overly excited over, or starting a row on Hoganstand over.

Maybe keep these threads for another day. Second half of the year will be quiet on the intercounty front.
Be nice for you to comment on the actual matches remaining particularly when your own county are involved in plenty of them

The population of Galway is nearly 3 times more than Kilkenny. That's your "pound for pound' out the window.

Kilkenny don't want to develop football whatsoever.

These population stats never come close to telling the true story. Galway is full of GAA players from other counties as is Dublin hence the populations - they also attract a lot more foreigners due to the indutry/companies in the cities. Klikenny would not have the same level of industry as Galway and therefore would not attract as many outsiders. You can be sure a good % of KK people live in Dublin for example and are involved in GAA in Kk. I think there's around 40 clubs in KK and approx 80 in Galway - many of which are football/hurling only - or rarely bother with football in the case of South Galway clubs.
Population helps massively but its not as straightforward as you suggest.

I'd agree with you on the population argument. It can be misleading.
The number of registered adult GAA players is a county's actual pool to pick from.
Mayo for example have more registered footballers than we do in Galway. Of course a good chunk of our county, is primarily hurling only.
As for them main topic here, it's definitely for the winter months.
Far too much action to discuss at the moment!

I would agree that Galway are the best overall GAA county. They compete at the top level of all four codes and at all grades.

How anyone can suggest Kilkenny are one of the best overall GAA counties is beyond me. They show total disregard to football which gives me them a massive advantage of their competitors in hurling. Counties like Tipperary , Limerick Waterford and even Wexford who treat both football and hurling the same are better overall GAA counties than Kilkenny .

Tipperary would surely be, 2 all Irelands in hurling and a Munster football title.
