Derry V Donegal Ulster Final

Replying To JoeSoap:  "I find this sort of idea of the game yesterday kind of odd. Nothing against you personally AntrimJim it's a type of post and I've seen it replicated among pundits across the country.

But how do you tally Derry having high level of fitness and skills vs Donegal looking lifeless (and from some pundits: poor, disgraceful, pedestrian, lacking ideas, take your pick from the above!) - and yet Donegal only lose by 2 points after ET?

By all accounts if Donegal were as bad as many have been saying, we'd have been beat out the gate.

I am as sore as anyone about the defeat but I don't understand this idea that Derry were miles ahead of us."
Donegal had a very poor day yet Derry just about fell over the line, another couple of full blooded attacks and Derry were beat.

Still frustrated today after this game, woke up pretty annoyed. Everyone I met today is in the same form.

Derry won the game and deservedly so. Brendan Rodgers and Conor Glass showed the type of desire to go and win the game that we lacked. I am happy for them as they've had a long wait and the majority of their fans were sound. They can give any team in Ireland trouble.

From a Donegal perspective a lot has been said already in the aftermath so I'll try not to repeat what has said to death. A few observations though: firstly, we have a few players in that team getting a free pass despite poor form. Donegal fans know who.

Secondly, I had hoped there would be a tactical set of attacking plays we would have up our sleeve for the final, that didn't transpire. It seems there is no attacking plan with variety.

I like Declan Bonner, a great servant of our county, but his management team should take a long look today at whether they are getting the best out of this team. In my view they're certainly not. I don't accept for a single second this group of players can't go further. But that's their fate unless some frank conversations and actions take place. This fear of losing mentality has crept in among all our age groups and it's a disease. 2012 was about intensity, doing things at breakneck speed and raw bloody hunger. This possession based, 'managing the game' mentality is not working.

If the draw is kind to us, and a two week break helps rest the bodies, who knows yet what could happen. But unless the gloves come off we can stay at home.

Just an observation here.
The Donegal team warmed up right close to where I was sitting.
I couldn't help but notice that almost all of their players are really big muscled strong athletic type figures . Really fine strong physical specimens, in truth probably more of the physique common in Rugby players. I am not being derogatory in any way, but my first thought was that Derry might just get swatted aside.

Replying To essmac:  "I watched all 3 provincial finals this weekend. In Munster and Leinster, I dozed off / switched off at half time. Literally nothing to keep me interested. Seen tougher challenge matches.

Sure, today with Derry v Donegal was tactical, but so were Real Madrid last night, and I don't hear a mass outcry about their extremely defensive approach to their game.

Too many traditional GAA fans addicted to schoolboy defending. Most of them would be better served following basketball.

One of the worst games I ever seen was the high-scoring Tyrone-Down drawn Ulster final in 2003, when Tyrone leaked 4 goals. Goals galore, much excitement, game lauded as a "classic".

Whereas I thought it was a joke, with comedy defending on both sides, but especially by Tyrone. Great crack for the day-trippers, but incredibly infuriating to watch if, like me, you think that defending is as much an art as attacking.

I enjoy watching teams trying to figure out a defence. Rogers was heroic in extra time today. "Boring" or not, I was gripped by the game and interested throughout. Obviously, I'm not as sophisticated as some, but I'll live with that ; )"
Totally agree with this summation.

Replying To The keeper:  "First of all, no its not a NC player
Secondly all i ever hear is excuses for bonner, its the manager's job to improve players and the team. And ask any real Donegal supporter's on the street or at games, they want Bonner and his management team to step down. We all have had enough.
There was big derry support there yesterday because there supporter's actually believe in there manager and the fact its been so long since they had success.
I have meet and been talking to Die hard Donegal supporter's who live and breathe gaa, that stopped following Donegal as long as Bonner is there.
And finally, i dont really care what you say, i realised a long time ago that your football knowledge is very limited and you come across in your posts as childish.
Anyone making excuses for Bonner at this stage, i would have to question there football knowledge."
What are you talking about you weren't even at the game. Must have been in Leo's you were talking to the supporters. You say supporters won't go to games because bonners in charge, is that your excuse now. Anthony Molloy have yous we'll sussed

No fear of that with the current Donegal game plan where players are told to turn back and retreat if they meet an opposition player.

Yes we've big men, but I think we lack some acceleration from them at times. I don't say pace because when Michael Langan and Jason McGee get going for example, they move quick (though their soloing style makes it look like they're going slow). McGonagle as well is quicker than he might look. But I think that burst from a standing start is missing with some of them, which someone like Conor Glass or Rogers definitely have.

Derry aren't wanting in that department in my opinion but I really like your half-forward line. Cassidy and Doherty especially.

The Ulster final was absorbing to watch. Never going to be any different sort of a game especially given Gallagher's past connection. Donegal also knew what had happened to Tyrone so had no chance in a shoot out.

Derry did what they had to do, and I'd still fancy them to be there at the end. If they get to play Dublin or Kerry, it will be different type of game I would imagine. A lot of the media comment is superficial and cliched. Sound bites and click bait.

I know it's if, but if Donegal or Derry get to an All Ireland final, turn your backs on wee Marty Morrissey when he comes a begging for interviews.

They were not swatted. Derry were just better, and with a little more adventure, would have had a bigger winning margin.

They should find commentators for these games who aren't stuck in the 90s and froth over Kerry and Dublin at every available opportunity. Himself and Ger Canning have butchered many a Donegal surname over the year too live on air. I wouldn't give you much for what RTE know.

That was a huge monkey to get of the back of Derry, and of Rory Gallagher. Who knows the shackles may have fallen . Beware the team that meets them because they have nothing to lose now.

Yeah they could be a bit like we were in 2011. A long overdue Ulster win instils massive belief. If Derry had one more really top notch inside forward to go along with McGuigan I'd give them a right good chance of achieving more. I know McFaul isn't really an inside forward but he'd be a great addition to what yez have there already. I wonder has he burned his bridges with Gallagher though?

What would have happened if Murphy had played full forward for the entire game, well the full back woulnt have scored 3 points and got played of the week.

Derry will play either Cork/Louth, Clare/Meath, Mayo or Armagh in the QF. Definitely have what it takes to beat any of them. Possibly Galway in a SF after that.

They'll be on the crest of a wave after Sunday and have the best momentum of any team left.

Yes supporter's from glen to malin head, none have any faith in bonner bringing the team any success. And i be chatting to them regularly.
And again every one of your posts come across as childish, a 15 year old with to much time on your hands. And your lack of knowledge about Donegal football is there for everyone to see.

From what I see at these big games more than half our supporters are young ones out by the bus load for a day out on the beer,
I don't think many of them care that much about the football it's just another excuse for a day out on the beer, suppose it's the same with every county.

Marty Morrissey was spot on in calling it brutal. This type of football played was akin to the rubbish you see across the pond.

FairPlay to them! As long as they enjoy it.

Never saw so much moaning and groaning about losing a game in my life! Donegal still have back door option and one game from quarter final! You lost the game by a few points! Time to move on and prepare for the next game! Monday morning quarterbacks abound, it seems!
