23 Championship Games This Weekend?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

23 senior championship games take place this weekend including the Hurling Joe Mcdonagh, Ring etc.
If you want to pare it back you could say theres 11 hurling and football championship games in the provinces.
How could RTE or any individual keep track of all these 11 games to be fair not to mind the 12 other hurling games ??
More evidence of a completely over the top crammed season.

Well it's easy. Most will only follow their code. I can't imagine there will be too many people in Limerick following Ulster football. Only diehard fans care about the lower tiers and RTÉ has a full write up on all games.

Antrim-Cavan, Mayo-Galway, and Donegal-Armagh will be the games I'll be watching.

Club players wanted a split season and even extending the season to August will still have the same congestion.

Every other sport seems to manage. It was way to dragged out before.

If everyone supports their own county in both codes, all will be fine.

Was always the same early in a season. What's the point of your post?

Youd be surprised how many people in other counties would watch other counties football or hurling , with all the matchs on in the new Crammed season it wont be possible any more unless youve 3 heads and 6 eyes!!

I'll be in wexford park sat and sun I'll watch Waterford and limerick if I can get out of wexford park. If ya go to games it's very hard to see other games. Was in Walsh park and had to break an ould speed limit or two to get back to Ross in time for limerick cork.

Split season makes no difference to club season. The Longford championship is due to start around the same time it always has in late July, early August. The leagues are only starting this weekend. We have always had to play league games after championship and for the last few years in the middle of championship.

Clubs don't want the championship starting any earlier as they want their players back from America to play in championship, I'd imagine its the same in every county.

I think the GAA will eventually realise that it doesn't really benefit clubs by having the All-Ireland Final in July and it'll end up in late August.

In Longford we started training in January as did other clubs. No fixtures released until March and they have changed week on week. We have players away for an upcoming game because they booked to go to a Premier League game on a date there was no game fixed for. So we have had to wait months for master fixture list, months for a competitive game and then it doesn't start when it was supposed to but on another date that was supposed to be free.

If a county like Longford who essentially have no hurling and are guaranteed to be finished championship early can't provide fixtures in a proper manner to satisfy the vast majority of players then I don't see how the split season will benefit anyone. For me its a simple fix, start the season early, get all league games out of the way before championship and don't hold up any league games for county players of any level, if they are available, if not then get on with it. Players not getting game time with county are released back to club for league games and all county players back a month before championship to play challenges or whatever.

There's always more games in early rounds and hurling is round robin so no teams eliminated in the first few rounds. The GAA are scheduling championship games, not trying to cater for the optimum number of games on television to keep the viewing public. Regardless of it being a compressed season, no bad thing if clubs get to run off their championships, there's always going to be more games in the early rounds. But I do think they're lacking a bit of bite, not being do or die win or you're out. The real championship starts when it's win or go home games for me, unless it's the Munster Hurling or Ulster Football championships.

This is what players want. More matches for every team. It's great.

You might have a point. I think they might need to employ a second man. It's too unfair to expect one man to update all those live text commentaries, Twitter accounts, etc. A second man would make it a little bit more manageable.

Who said that league form this year was crucial.
This week's matches
Antrim Vs Cavan - D4 side Cavan went to Belfast and beat a D3 side.
Wexford Vs Offaly - A team who finished in lower regions of D4 beat Offaly who were very unlucky in D2 this season
Mayo Vs Galway - A D2 side went to the home of the Connacht champions who were operating in D1 this season and contested the league final.

This years championship could be very exciting this year particularly in the much maligned provisional series if this week is anything to go by.

The English soccer league and cup - which let's be honest is the most popularly watched sport in Ireland from Inishowen to Rosslare - lasts for 9 months?

Even in the off season Irish media is full of soap opera garbage about some millionaire leaving "us" and joining "them." So give them another two months uncontested air time.

So what sense does it make for GAA to reduce our championships to basically a blitz with the two All Ireland champions playing games that are pay per view? The biggest game in Munster football moved to accommodate a concert? They are already planning to use Croke Park for soccer games which will have further repercussions.

The club issue is a total red herring. This was sold on basis of appealing to juniors who like to think they are being denied games because a county senior team is playing in July or August!

There are few if any games in August. And as the chap from Longford says above, no county is making any significant changes to their club schedule that is dependent on the All Ireland finals being two months early.

Only catching up on the weekend results this morning - all 23 games.

Didn't even know Wicklow pulled off a very significant win over Laois and equally Wexford footballers beating offaly. Antim and Down hurlers had a high scoring game and my Buddies in Lancashire( Manchester) beat Cavan in hurling.

No let up this week for Limerick people as Minor Hurlers play tomorrow night in Munster semi final, the following night the Under 20 hurlers are playing Munster semi final and the following night Minor Footballers are playing, how are supporter expected to afford to follow their county or even physically get to all these games.

We are gone from one extreme to the other a too drawn out championship to a crammed jam packed 2 months of games- the truth is somewhere in between.

Look at the football this weekend, it's a shame all these matches are run off over 1 weekend. Some great matches to come particularly Kildare v Louth , Derry v Tyrone, Monaghan vDown too many.
