Predictions For 2022 Cavan Senior Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

This weeks tips as follows:
Despite last weeks heroics, this weeks fixtures are a lot tougher. Trust me (obviously), but bet that wee bit smaller.

Junior & Intermediate are made more difficult with a good few of the would be favourites scoring very little in their games last weekend. Senior is also tough with little recent form to go on. Good to at least have Killygarry in there as a known quantity, and I expect them to improve on their poor league form to bring them up to that honourable 1 point loss to Gowna level.

For the first time in recent memory, I have tipped Kingscourt to beat one of the big hitters. They have been a bet buster for me in recent years but Jordan Morris will hopefully justify the hype and the 22/1 Boylesports sponsored Accumulator of the weekend is:

Kingscourt, Mullahoran, Laragh & Xlough
I am leaving out the Draw as it is too high tariff, and Gowna are poor odds against a team with a lot of one off potential

Senior
Kingscourt v Ramor - Kingscourt by 1
Mullahoran v Ballinagh - Mullahoran by 1
Xlough v Cavan Gaels - Xlough by 4
Bultersbridge v Laragh - Laragh by 1
Lavey v Lacken - Draw
Gowna v Killygarry - Gowna by 1

Intermediate
Ballymacugh v Shercock - Ballymachugh by 1
Cucuhulainns v Bailieboro - Bailieborough by 1
Cootehill v Drumgoon - Drumgoon by 1
Templeport v Killeshandra - Templeport by 6
Kilinkere v Belturbet - Belturbet by 1
Ballyhaise v Cornafean - Ballyhaise by 1
Denn v Castlerahan - Castlerahan by 3

Junior
Shannon Gaels v Redhills - Shannon Gaels by 2
Drumalee v Munterconnacht. - Drumalee by 1
Drumlane v Drung - Drumlane by 2
Kill v Kildallon - Kill by 1
Corlough v Swanlinbar - Corlough by 1
Maghera v Mountnugent - Mountnugent by 13
Knockbride v Arva - Arva by 3

Replying To evano11:  "The midfielder was booked twice and correctly shown the red card. The linesman called the refs attention because the Drumgoon bench kept at him. The ref showed the management team his card which showed who he had booked and also what min they were booked in. At the end of the game he showed it and offered them the option of photographing it but they said they accepted what they were shown"

The video of the game proves different from what you state, but we are all human and errors does happen. I personally have great respect for anyone who referees games, its a thankless job.

Ramor were comfortable against Kingscourt. A lot of sloppy play from both teams but more urgency and pace in the Ramor team. Kingscourt play very slow and lateral. Jordan Morris showed very well but ball wasn't going in fast. Barry Reilly a loss for his vision.

Ramor were good last night, but I don't see them retaining their title. Without McEvoy and now James Brady they will be limited up front. Defensively they look solid, even with out O'Connell. Jack Brady and Liam Brady were the standouts for me. Jack is an almighty loss to that county team, and Liam a very calming presence with accuracy from the tee. Ado also showed well, Kingscourt just didn't seem to have the match up for him. Ben Smith is a smart player too, but I think Ramor need to get more out of him if they are to go the whole way or reach the final. Laurence Caffrey also didn't show well but has a lot more to give.

Kingscourt were way off, Ramor were in control and the scoreboard probably flattered Kingscourt. Morris the clear standout for the Stars, Faulkner also tried very hard but can't be everywhere at once unfortunately for them. Limited in attack, couldn't deal with Ramor's bodies behind the ball and never really broke any lines. They had a few opportunities to move the ball quick before Ramor setup, but a combination of poor build up from Kingscourt and cynical play from Ramor put a halt to that.

As for the remaining games this weekend I see them going like so -

Ballinagh by 2 - I was thinking Mullahoran since the draw came out, but I can't help think how poorly they showed when it really mattered last year. Ballinagh not near where they were last year, but I back them to take this one, just.

Crosserlough by 4 - Crosserlough unlikely to allow Gearoid to stomp as freely as he did in the League final. Crosserlough, a much more balanced team should get over the line.

Lacken by 2 - I've a funny feeling about this one, Lacken did well to avoid a relegation playoff in Division 1 this year without Raymond and Thomas. Lavey for all the talk of a championship team, I think there luck might start to run out this year.

Bridge by 1 - A very tight call here. Laragh probably better balanced, but Bridge forwards could cause the Laragh backs plenty of headaches. McCarthy is a shrewd operator, and will no doubt have a plan for Laragh. I give Bridge the very slight edge.

Gowna by 8 - 8 points may seem like a lot, but I can see this one being tight with Gowna pulling away towards the end. Killygarry need to step up at some point, maybe this is the game they can do it, but I can't see them taking a scalp on Gowna.

Good performance by the Gaels last night with a lot of players missing. Proved the bookies don't always get it right!

Think Butlersbridge will have a short stay in Senior. They don't have a good defence and that was badly exposed in the Ulster Club last year.

Only 10/16 Pat. That is poor by your standards.

Granted, there was three draws but I would be expecting better from you next weekend.

Congratulations to Killygarry on winning a group game. Senior now looks very open with Xlough and Gowna's big squads of young talent not having them as far ahead of the other teams with thinner panels in these one off c'ship games as one might have thought. Junior also looking less the one horse race we might have thought.

Hard to pick out another Intermediate team that might make Ballyhaise a 50/50 game. Templeport, Castlerahan, Shercock probably the joint 2nd favourites there but might not be in the same league if Ballyhaise are even at 90%.

Some interesting results from this weekends championship games.

Cavan Gaels beating Crosserlough is a big statement.

Ballyhaise putting 5 goals passed Cornafean stands out in intermediate.

In Junior, Corlough after playing with Swad last year to turn around beat them this year on their own, is an eye catcher.

Crosserlough playing James Smith when he was carrying an injury didn't make sense. Its not the Tyrone Championship where it's knockout. A lot of the games lacked real intensity . Gearoid McKiernan played very well again but had a lot of space.

A little easier this week looking at the fixtures. Very confident of another strong Junior and a much better Intermediate. Expecting to be back up around the 15/16 mark.

Senior still tough going for the Accumulator of the week after only getting 2/4 last week. We will abandon Kingscourt and go for the Lavey, Xlough, Gaels, Killygarry fourfold at 8/1. Ramor no price and Gowna are a poor price at 2/7 against a team who racked up 3-17 last weekend.

Agree with this. It won't get much notice because its Junior football but what Corlough have done is very impressive. To toil for years with 17/18 players and then go in with Swad for 2 years to have 3 or 4 players play with swad regularly in that time and then to come back out as their own team, win 4 or 5 games in the league, run a few other teams tight in the league and have a panel of 26 or 27 for championship and beat swad in championship football, its some achievement.
