Great to see that New Work will get their first competitive game in a few years this weekend against Sligo. There are a lot of great Gaels in New York doing trojan work and the GAA is a vital support network for Irish people, especially for those arriving in the Big Apple.

I must admit I've always been a wee bit envious of the Connacht counties getting to head across every 5 years for a game. Obviously it's a significant financial undertaking to bring a squad over. But in terms of bringing the Irish ex pat community together for a big GAA weekend, it must be hard beat for the craic and for catching up with people from home who might have made the trip over.

All the best to all involved this weekend. It's a pity the likes of RTE never made much of an effort to cover it. Marty Morissey would be in his absolute element being sent over there for a few days capturing the buzz. It probably would cost more than it's worth in terms of viewing figures. But just for the novelty factor, it would be a good way for RTE and the GAA to market the Championship.

Yes, agreed that it's a great initiative for NY and the Connacht counties (as is the annual game away to London). Was over in NYC the last time Mayo (or anyone else, for that matter) played there in 2019, and it's a super weekend.

NY ran Leitrim very close the last time they were over, is there any chance of a repeat this time around?

Galway were scheduled to go out pre covid. I would have thought the schedule would have picked up where it left off. Was really looking forward to it.

With the help of god Leitrim will get out in 2023... a fabulous weekend for Gaels in NY. It has to be done once at least... hard to describe the feeling but it's fairly special to be out in the Bronx following your county. And the craic does be mighty. Hoping to be singing a few bars of Lovely Leitrim myself in JP Clarkes in 2023!

Hopefully some NY based posters can shed some light on the current squad. I could we wrong on this, but there seems to be more of an emphasis these days on developing and playing born and bred New York/US players? In the past there definitely were a few county men from the old country in the mix but that doesn't seem quite the same nowadays? No doubt there will still be some Irish lads who have relocated to the US who are part of the squad though.

Haha that's the stuff. I'd love to sing a few bars of Destination Donegal in Fagans or the like again. Went out there as a student in the summer of 03. Great memories.

Would anyone have a list of the New York panel? Would be great to see if they have any familiar names in the camp.

Open to correction but i think with the new format coming in play next year New York will play in the Tailteann Cup preliminary round instead of the Connacht championship.

The provincial championships are unchanged... New York remain in the Connacht Championship ... https://m.sundayworld.com/sport/gaa/questions-to-answer-as-countdown-to-the-all-ireland-championship-nears-an-end-41412274.html

I think New York should not be in the competition. The gaa should have an American championship which would accommodate them. This is a huge expense and eventually they will win a game and then what. More expense for someone to have to travel out there. Or otherwise have it that they play every county in Ireland moving around the provinces.

Most Counties love going out, Can be a great fundraiser with most Counties actually making money from the trip. Whose the expense on, The fans? no one forced to travel. I would have loved to go out again only with covid we missed our go.

New York's next game in the Tailteann Cup will be played in Ireland, so even if they had won on Sunday they would be able to travel for the next round game. New York should be entered into division 4 of the league, think the GAA are well capable of funding the travel. The annual game in New York is a much better representation of the GAA than the super 11s hurling

Who pays for the team to go out? The tooth fairy? Will NY travel here for games? And that fundraising is money which could definitely be used by the local teams
