Yeah, the manager and the player have a different version of events.

Carlow vs Kerry: This is probably the biggest game this weekend in terms of importance to both sides. Carlow only have two home games, they need to win both to have a realistic shot at the final. Kerry, coming off a home loss, need to win to stay in it, otherwise they are looking at a relegation playoff. Kerry beat Carlow in Carlow only a few weeks back, but Carlow seem to be hitting form at the right time. Too hard to call for me.

Down vs Antrim: Either team could probably afford to lose this one and still be in with a good shout of reaching the final, but this will show us where Down are at. Ballycran is a tough place to go and get a win, but Antrim coming off a great win last week should be able to edge it.

Offaly vs Meath: Offaly by quite a bit.

After last weekend, Antrim v Down, the Ulster derby, is the tie of the round. Carlow will be confident enough that McDonagh status is at least retained. Meath will be eyeing Kerry as a potential relegation final. Kerry despite some early season promise could be in a dangerous situation. It's harsh on any of the McDonagh counties to be relegated. An expansion to 8 must be seriously considered.

Saturday 23 April
Joe McDonagh Cup round 2
At Netwatch Cullen Park
Kerry 3-21
Carlow 0-15

Good response by Kerry after losing to Down last week. Meath will be a crucial game next week as both seek to retain McDonagh status.

Antrim v Carlow. Antrim
Kerry v Meath Kerry
Down v Offaly Offaly. ( Tricky one for Offaly here)

The Leinster SHC group stage had 4 teams in it from 2015.

This was felt to be "too harsh" so its successor the Joe McDonagh cup was expanded to 5 teams in 2018.

This was felt to be "too harsh" so the Joe McDonagh cup was expanded to 6 teams in 2020.

Now it "must" be expanded to 8? Why? At what point do we stop promoting more and more teams?

The "one for everyone in the audience" approach was tried in the Walsh Cup in Leinster with weaker and weaker teams getting promoted and nobody relegated. The hammerings got so bad that everyone bar Liam MacCarthy counties were sent back to the Kehoe Cup.

You do make a fair point. The expansions though have been sensible and fair. If teams knocking on the door are showing they can step up, they have been included.
The McDonagh can expand to 8, 10 and 12 within the current timescale.

8 teams;
1 group of 8 teams. All teams play 4 teams, 1 team from each of 4 seeded brackets.
All-Ireland play-off: 1&2 v 3&4. Winners qualifies for the All-Ireland Preliminary quarter-finals.
McDonagh Preliminary Quarter-finals: 5&6 v 7&8.
McDonagh Quarter-finals: All-Ireland play-off losers v McDonagh Preliminary Quarter-final winners.
McDonagh Semi-finals: All-Ireland Play-off winners v McDonagh Quarter-final winners.
(McDonagh Preliminary Quarter-finals losers into the relegation final.)

10 teams;
2 groups of 5.
Group winners qualify for All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals.
McDonagh Quarter-finals: 2nd & 3rd placed teams.
McDonagh Semi-finals: Group winners v McDonagh Quarter-final winners.
(Bottom team in each group into relegation final.)

12 teams;
2 groups of 6.
Group winners qualify for All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals.
McDonagh Quarter-finals: 2nd & 3rd placed teams.
McDonagh Semi-finals: Group winners v McDonagh Quarter-final winners.
(Bottom team in each group into relegation final.)

Down vs Offaly: Big game this, Down need a serious reaction after being well beaten by Antrim last weekend. Both teams on 2 points, with Down having the easier run in. A win for either would go along way to making a final. Hard one to call this, I'd give the edge to Offaly.

Antrim vs Carlow: This looks like an easy win for Antrim, given how poor Carlow were last weekend, but that loss to Kerry really stung the players and management, so I'm expecting a response this weekend. from Carlow I'd still expect Antrim to win out by 6 points, but I think they will be tested.

Kery vs Meath: Even though Meath were much better against Offaly, Kerry were excellent against Carlow and will be hoping they are coming into form at the right time. Kerry y 10 plus.

Cruel stuff. Thought Carlow were the better team against Antrim. Leading by a point with a few minutes to go and every decision then went against them.
Twice Micheal Doyle was fouled in the last few minutes and the ref gave it the other way.
Anyway a much better performance from our lads. Kerry beating Meath well in the other game.

Kerry have responded well to the opening day defeat. The final two games against Division 1 opponents will be difficult. Sure we'll give our best shot and we will hope for the best.

Offaly have beaten Down. Antrim have 3 wins from 3. Kerry and Offaly now have 2 wins. Carlow and Down have 1 win. If Carlow beat Down in Round 4, Carlow will be safe. It will give Meath a lifeline and setup a final day relegation final against Down.

As things stand

1. Antrim 6 +19
2. Kerry 4 +41
3. Offaly 4 +13
4. Carlow 2 +7
5. Down 2 -16
6. Meath 0 -64

With Meath this weekend, Antrim should book their place in the final with a game to spare.

Carlow vs Down is both sides last chance to salvage something from this campaign and possible book a final spot. Game should have a bit of spice to it given the allegations made against Carlow after the game in Ballycran in the league. Down would like to avoid having to play Meath on the last day in a relegation decider.

Keery vs Offaly is huge for both. A win for either goes along way to securing a final spot. An Offaly win leaves the door open slightly for Carlow (if they can beat Down), who they play on the final day. Kerry win and they have already qualified Antrim on the final day, which works in their favour.

Still alot to play for. Either Carlow or Down will be eliminated this week.. Both hoping to get to 6 and see what happens from there.

We all need a weekend to catch our breaths. I'll be in Austin Stacks Park on Saturday week, May 14th, for the visit of Offaly. A Carlow win over Down opens the door for Meath to survive. The McDonagh Cup is bubbling nicely. I think Antrim are the 11th ranked team in the country. It's a difficult year for anyone else to win it. Antrim are gunning for Laois' 10th ranked spot. Some of Antrim's league results showed they might be the most likely to get near the Top 9.

Big test for Offaly hurlers in Tralee, on 14th May next. Winner will take a big step to JMCD final. It won't be an easy game, Offaly have won without looking convincing, but a win is a win.

Offaly have drawn the short straw for away fixtures. Away to Antrim, Down and next Kerry. We saw in the final against Westmeath last year, how valuable Division 1 experience was for them.
We would see it as being advantage Offaly. Antrim and Offaly have both been the clear favourites to make the final. We will of course however be hoping for the best.
