The answer to the question is No. Joe Mcdonagh is a great competition as is Christy Ring. Just look at 2022 Antrim,Offaly ,Down Kerry and Carlow will all fancy their chances and Meath will fight tooth and nail to avoid relegation.More teams would dilute the cut and thrust.

Kildare and Derry wouldn't dilute the Joe McDonagh standard. 8 teams would be the right calibration mark.
Example:
1. Antrim (Semi-final) Antrim v Kerry
2. Offaly (Semi-final) Offaly v Down
3. Down (Semi-final)
4. Kerry (Semi-final)
5. Carlow
6. Meath
7. Kildare
8. Derry (Relegated)

Dont think the lads in Carlow would agree with your predictions! With all due respects I dont think Derry are near Mcdonagh standard.

I purely used league form. If Derry aren't McDonagh ready, that's why they'll be relegated!

It's going to be some battle in McDonagh 2023. Laois will be looking to go straight back up. Offaly and Carlow weren't too far away from making the final this year.
Down had a good league and won in Tralee. They had to beat Meath then so secure their McDonagh status.
Kildare were a step above everyone in the Ring. Meath might be the same in next year's Ring. While there has been a bit of discussion around McDonagh qualification to the provincial championships, the boundary from McDonagh to Ring seems a bit severe.
If the McDonagh finalists were not being rewarded with a preliminary quarter-final, I'd be in favour of an 8 team McDonagh. After 7 group games, top 4 into the semi-finals, with the top 2 having home advantage.
