Replying To breffnibluewhite:  "Positives first I thought the first game was a great contest and a great advertisement for the new competition and shows that when teams of similar standard play each other alot of the negative elements ie multiple sweepers and backward handpassing are out the window. There are only three teams playing this muck now Donegal Derry ( thanks to mcguiness and his side kick ) and Mickey hartes louth. You had two teams here who were in division 4 of the league and the standard of point taking and attacking play was way better than what some on here thinks was great football in the eighties and nintees.
Cavan are division 2 top half level when it comes to attacking football apart from their attempts at scoring goals which was the worst of any team in the four league divisions and still has not been rectified. Even Sligo yesterday were not content with taking a point if there was a half chance of a goal. This is killing us as we went from total domination 6 points up to a tight contest when they scored their penalty which was incorrectly awarded but made a great contest of the game.
We have gone to a division 4 bottom half when it comes to defending. At the moment we have only 1-2 defenders who can defend. Faulkner is no longer a tight marker and should be moved out to centre back. killian Clarke was never a defender not physical or cynical enough may get away with him at midfield. This has only become more apparent when we have less lads dropping back and sweeping up in front of our defence.
I was suprised at Westmeaths attack even though offaly defense was non existant. you could see them scoring 5 to 6 goals against us if they got the chances that sligo got yesterday.
I feel the final will be much more cagey affair Moynagh will probably come in as a sweeper and Cavan look much more secure with him organising the defence. We need to reduce the amount of goal chances we conceede each game and take a few of our goal chances or Westmeath could easily cause an upset in the final"
Bottom half Division 4 defensively? My god. Cavan supporters never change, do they? It's always the worst ever scenario. Are you seriously saying defensively we're as bad as Waterford or Carlow based on one game? Look, it was one game, and very open, and we left ourselves open with the way we were attacking. It happens with big favourites when they go out attack, and we'll learn from that. We'll not be so loose again when it'll be a tighter cagier affair with Westmeath. But let's not get ridiculous here. Mad the hyperbole we see from our supporters from one game...

Didn't say I wanted a new manager…. Just pointing out how lucky he was to be still in the job… I'd say no manager in sporting history has ever held on to their job after getting relegated 3 years on the trot… Was behind him on Sunday and how he couldn't see the problems Cavan were having is a joke… Pat Faulkner didn't look right to me at all and had a grimace on him all throughout the match as if he was in pain or not well… Killian Brady gallops up the field to far and then is slow on the retreat and why does he continually resort to introducing Conroy who can't run… surely we have younger speedier options on the bench…. Allowing all the short kick outs was pure madness and only kept a woefully average Sligo team in the game and made them look ten times better than they were… In the end of the day it was 2 average Div 3/4 teams serving up a close enough match that was enjoyable but looking at it God help either if they came up against a top team as both defence's were shocking….. Hopefully Moynagh can tighten things up more the next day

Typical, the fellas that go to no matches all year get the best seats.

I agree with some of your points about how Cavan played on Sunday but for the love of god would you read back your whole post. Its just unbelievably bitter and negative. You can see no good in anything.

…..and truthfull… say it as it is and by the way you agree with some of it… Was at several matches and to be fair it wasn't too hard to get a good seat on Sunday… final will be a different story especially if Armagh make the big Semifinal

Well for example you choose to say "conroy cant run" yet you omit to say that he is good on the ball, a calm head and they type of player that could help settle young lads down around him. He might not be the fastest in the world but saying he cannot run is an overly negative exaggeration.

And yes, as I said earlier, I thought our forward press was poor on Sunday. We had the men there to pressure the kick outs from Sligo and force them long but we far to easily let them get kick outs away short and even then put very little pressure on the Sligo players as they moved forward.

When I say "can't run" I'm meaning he is too slow (you admit that) for County football…. He started in a couple of league games and got rinsed for pace and remember that was Division 4 which is well of the pace of top level stuff… Would it not make more sense to introduce pace late in a game when teams are tired…. You are correct about the press.. we can't allow a short kick out as our forwards aren't great at tackling with McKiernan the biggest culprit… I really hope they push up on Westmeath because if we adopt the same tactics the likes of Heslin will get too much easy possession and destroy us…!

Its no wonder Pat Faulkner did not look right he will be 61 this year should have retired long ago

Replying To fredflint:  "So if Faulkner and Clarke are not good enough who do you propose putting in their positions?

I dont agree with your points. The issue was how Cavan set up, we played man on man with no sweeper and pushed up. However the problem was our press was very poor and Sligo were able to work short kick outs. Then our defending against their transition was also poor which left our FB line very isolated. Against any half decent forward with 40m of space around them you are going to be in trouble. My assessment is we attacked very well (bar some very poor goals missed) but our press needs serious work as we would've hammered Sligo if we forced them to go long on kick outs. I imagine a more cautious approach will be employed in the final."
I think Faulkner would now be better at centre back and i would try jason mcloughlin at full back he is our best man marker and is also quite good at feilding a high ball and reads the game better than most. I would move killian Clarke to midfield or if not to the sideline and replace him with moynagh who is a specialist sweeper.

Conroy has many positives and I imagine he was put in to get on ball and calm things down, not to tear around the pitch. Horses for courses. You've espoused the idea of adding Conor Moynagh into starting team, a good player no doubt, but also lacking pace. Why does Conor get a pass and Conroy doesn't?

Nothing has improved defensively from the London game to the Sligo game last Sunday. So if we can't improve defensively against teams our level how will we improve against teams on a higher level than us?

Are you actually watching any of our games? As it seems you're not the way you're talking. And that's bordering on hysterical talk. Sure, we had poor moments at time, especially Sunday, but not a bottom Div 4 level side defensively. Actually crazy stuff you're talking

Pauric or Pat you know what I mean but your obviously poor reading of a game and what goes on in it shows you couldn't see he was having some sort of problem…. I think you would probably fit in with the current management team… they could see no problem with him either… It's little wonder we slipped all the way to Division 4……!!

He came on in the League Final too and the first thing he done was trip himself up and gave possession away….that really calmed things down…!!!

WAC had it that falkner was getting over food poisoning and he wasn't right.

We struggled against a big London full forward.
We struggled against a Tipperary Full forward.
We struggled against a half fit Sligo full forward who only played 1 half.
Those 3 teams cut us wide open and if they had any half decent finishers we would have lost all 3 games. Defensively where do you seem improvement?????????

I never claim to be an expert or shoot down every one else opinion where your are oboviously an expert in all things gaa and i am sure would be an excellant coach. I think you should be added to mickeys management team and give the team their pep talk before they go out on the field which like your posts would be brimming with positivity. you could then take over the management role when Mickey retires everyone on here would be fully behind you.

Oh for sure we struggled against a few individual players. I'm pulling you on your point that we're a bottom Div 4 team defensively when that has not shown to be the case at all. What are you actually watching? If we had that, how did we win the Division, and then reach this Tailteann Final beating teams who were solidly Division 3, or coming down from Division 2?

Well a blind man in the stand could see he wasn't near right but our crack management team saw fit to play him and leave him on for the entire game… It was plain to anyone who knows anything about the game that he wasn't himself….

Where have I said we are a bottom Div 4 Team? I said we between 15-32 probably 15/16th.
