Amalgamation of three junior clubs

Although no precise date has been recorded for the foundation of the club, Gaelic games have been played in the parish since at least the nineteenth century. One of the earliest written accounts of a Scotstown club appeared in a January 1890 edition of The People's Advocate newspaper, referring to a game against neighbouring club Ballinode. Various clubs came and went in the parish over the first half of the twentieth century, with Scotstown winning a Monaghan Junior Football League (JFL) title in 1933, Tydavnet winning a Monaghan Junior Football Championship (JFC) in 1935, and Knockatallon securing a Monaghan JFL title in 1944. The parish was represented intermittently up until the late 1950s by these three clubs, with all three struggling in the face of emigration and unemployment. The club finally made a breakthrough at senior level in the county after Tydavnet and Scotstown amalgamated, before going on to win the Monaghan Senior Football Championship (SFC) for the first time in 1960. The Knockatallon club threw their lot in with their parish neighbours shortly afterwards latefortraining (Monaghan) - Posts: 99 - 15/02/2024 14:42:47 2526212 Link 0 |
With casement showing some signs of development, what does this mean for clones 222 (UK) - Posts: 694 - 15/02/2024 20:19:36 2526270 Link 0 |
It means they'll chip away another bit of history from the GAA and clones will be left to rot and ruin. Casement is a boondoggle of the highest order. It's going to be more convenient to get to with the motorway - but the thing people forget about clones is that it's got loads of roads in and out, after games the crowds are mostly away within a half hour, with heaps of pubs and places to eat if you're sticking about. Casement has no handy parking, no amenities and hostile neighbours - so expect to see news stories after it opens about the static traffic at GAA games.. oh and they'll rename it too, expect to see Asda park as the home of ulster. Yeats had it right about old Ireland. Jjoniel79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 146 - 16/02/2024 07:32:41 2526298 Link 1 |
I can't see Casement drawing the crowds, is it not destined to be another Pairc Ui Chaoimh once the novelty wears off? as in only very occasionally full or near full, even for an Ulster final that now doesn't have the same prestige due to the championship structure will it be full? Granted Belfast needs a flagship GAA ground if the game is to grow in the city, this shouldn't be to the detriment of Clones though. Clones could be doing with some investment, was there ever an reason for not installing floodlights?

When you have commentators like Brolly (who'd have a far shorter commute to games in Antrim coming from Belfast) attacking clones at every opportunity it's no wonder there's been no investment in clones. It's the usual story, centralising wealth for the wealthy in affluent areas. I wouldn't have much complaints for rehoming ulster GAA if it was being moved to a central location in ulster… but sticking it way on up in the top corner of the country??… monies monies is all that monies.. I think Casement will be a nightmare to get parked at, I hate the thought of driving into Belfast. it will never have the atmosphere of Clones on an Ulster final day. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2749 - 16/02/2024 10:56:27 2526321 Link 0 |
Any where on line showing Derry v Monaghan ?…. Once again treated " as only a small wee county" always have least amount of live tv games in Div 1… & when they are usually " deferred" or a lesser spot Monaghan Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 442 - 16/02/2024 12:05:05 2526332 Link 0 |

It doesn't look to be available on any TV / Paid Streaming service. Its actually disgraceful, of all the Division 1 and Division 2 games on this weekend, only two games are not on TV. 1) Derry v Monaghan 2) Cavan v Cork. The fact that Gaa Go are showing a division 2 game, Donegal v Fermanagh, over a Div 1 fixture tomorrow evening is mind boggling .. Casement will be a nightmare , Ulster Rugby and Gaa should have got their head together and went for a greenfield site in mid Ulster, Cookstown possibly . a multipurpose stadium that will have usage 12 month of year.

The Ulster championship may be over by the time Casement park is built. I remember my father used to drive home via the Aldergrove airport area, not the main motorway. When going to Clones I have to use anti sickness pills due to all those winding country roads in Tyrone. My stomach was bouncing going through Donaghmore going to the 2022 Ulster final. Any word on any injury updates within the squad? monaghanmad (Monaghan) - Posts: 378 - 16/02/2024 16:32:15 2526381 Link 0 |
Derry have already been shown live twice and monaghan once, one game usually falls victim to coverage, I think it was Galway v roscommon last time out. Probably also an expectancy that Derry will win, should be an interesting test for this monaghan team although I would agree with other posters, the games against roscommon and tyrone probably will go a long way in survival. Will bannigan and Mc anespie return tomorrow or the older crew? As for casement, clones will be pretty much be redundant except for monaghan games sadly. 222 (UK) - Posts: 694 - 16/02/2024 17:19:28 2526388 Link 0 |
The new Casement will be a disaster. Its being built as a concert venue, not a Gaa facility. That's why it's not being built in Mid Ulster, because concert goers wouldn't go there. A political decision was made about 15 years ago, in conjunction with the Gaa, to run Clones into the ground, starve it of all Oxygen needed to survive, so that it will end up as a relic like they did with the old Casement Park. Theirs so much potential to develop Clones, to rebuild the Gerry Arthur Stand, to install floodlights, and to use the Peace Link facilities in conjunction with it. But no, Clones isn't viable for any of the ancillary events that make the big bucks for the GAA. BrehonBlonde (Monaghan) - Posts: 31 - 17/02/2024 00:46:38 2526430 Link 2 |
