Replying To Mooo:  "Did jack cooney pick the team same team as lastyear apart from scahill in for Smith because of Smith getting injured"
I'm sure Jack Smith's brother will see action in the league and Baker will likely be slowly brought into games. No point making wholesale changes for the sake of it either!

Solid looking team named but ridiculous naming a team which won't line out remotely as expected in forward line. Mind games against a Cavan side that know us too well. Jonathan Lynam and David Lynch the least likely corner forwards on the panel, no one thinks John Heslin will start at wing forward and surely Sam McCartan will be midfield. Good to see Dan Scahill getting his opportunity, had a super season with Shandonagh and is the eldest of a potential family of county footballers. Hopefully Matt Whittaker and Senan Baker see decent game time.

That forward line won't start. I have my ticket. Looking forward to the league season flask and sandwiches at the ready

Wouldn't say for the sake of it " it's time to start blooding new players" badly need one or two new skillfull forwards not just lads that will run all day

Great win for our senior footballers in Mullingar today. Will go along way to making sure of division 2 football next year and a good result to build on for upcoming games. McCartan very impressive I thought as well as Giles from Kinnegad after coming on.

Very poor performance. Looked like the lads had weights around their legs couldn't get moving at all.

O Toole and McCartan poorest I ever seen them. O Toole taking too much out of the ball.

Robbie Forde and Shane Dempsey are summer footballers and will add nothing to the team during the league.

Conor McCormack is not a midfielder.

Only positive is Ray, Luke and Lorcan made a great difference off the bench. All 3 should be back starting next week. Scahill also had a solid debut.

Unfortunately there's a lot to be said. How did we end up with a better team on the field at the end of the game than the beginning? Surely lads can either play or not? Connellan, Lorcan Dolan and Loughlin could play 30 mins but not start? Not a good start by management. Cavan were significantly better than us, some of our players are in poor form and we can't afford to have this with crucial league matches coming fast. Young Scahill was solid, Luke L and Lorcan Dolan were threatening in attack but very few positives.

Very poor performance almost every where on the field Cavan where well deserved winners "Westmeath with lots of lads well on there way to retirement age " where's all the downs players that won the senior championship and Leinster finalist .....

This is the problem with this forum! Pre written post's complementing their own crew! Are you ok there? We lost… And In what Universe did mcCartan play well today! The worst I've ever seen him.

Anyway, aside from that crazy post, early days, few changes, we deserved to be beaten for sure, but subs coming in (and who'll start the next day, all except Lynch who is looking more like a bodybuilder than a footballer) saved the day and there's Optimism because of it, so I think we'll take Longford next weekend.

Very good question I think management thought they would beat cavan. How can Ray Connellan Luke and Lorcán dolan not start also 5 lomans players started. 2 local derbies to come. If we loose them relegation beckons. So big game in Longford on Sunday next

McCartan? Him? Think there's crossed wires here somewhere Edman I was referring to Lucy McCartan who was playing for our senior footballers against Laois today.

I've no problem with five Loman's players starting, the five are deserving of their place especially when we're missing other forwards but some of those starting are playing poorly for some time, the Cavan half back line destroyed Westmeath for 50 mins, physically powerful and attacking at will, in relation to The Downs players not playing, Niall Mitchell and Darragh Egerton are county hurlers, Conor Coughlan gone travelling, Kevin O' Sullivan dropped from panel last week, Mark Kelly cruciate, two others played, another is sub keeper, that's eight players, who else have we from The Downs?? Cavan were determined to get revenge for Tailteann and were easily 6-7 points better team, it's also dispiriting to see us massively outnumbered supporters wise in a home game, the entire stand seemed to have Cavan supporters, our support is among the worst in the country.

Shocking stuff today after tailteann I was very hopeful, now I think we're bang average again. Our style of play is shocking especially playing in div 3 and this has been an issue for 5 years the only exception was the semi and final last year. Looked rudderless today O toole holding the ball for too long, Dempsey and Forde need to harden up and go searching for ball. A big problem at midfield we either have 2 good footballers in there or 2 bludgers we never blend them together. Also looking at the bench we have gone back an awful lot. Some lads shouldn't be near the panel.
Very envious of Our neighbours across the Shannon and how there doing things.

Presume you mean Roscommon? They've always been a step ahead of us, long time since they spent time in division 3, it's a football mad county that puts us in the shade when it comes to fundraising, support for county teams, admittedly hurling is a poor relation but football wise we're nowhere near their level.

That was poor stuff today, so important we get tge win in Longford or it could be a dire struggle in thus division.

Terrible stuff from Westmeath today. Apart from Wallace, Maguire and Scahill (except for a few nervey moments) nobody else played well on the starting 15. Cavans 5,6 and 7 destroyed us with their direct running. We had nobody willing or able to take on a man. Could not understand having Heslin out around the middle. He offered very little as did McCormack, McGivney and Lynam. Subs made a huge difference but it looked like a team lacking direction. Ref had a poor game but I would have sent Macartan off for firing the gumshield into the crowd. Was hoping he would kick on after the year he had last year but it is early days I suppose.

Its Longford or bust now for the league! They will be gunning for us after championship last year and losing to Fermanagh this weekend.

Positive from today

- Scahill looks a very good prospect for such a young player
- the lads who came on made a huge difference and if they had started it could/would have been a very different game
-Wallace and Maguire consistent as ever

Would worry about the lack of squad depth though. Was there anyone note named on panel today that could feature in future games ?
