Game versus Kildare called off after Kildare withdrew. Disappointing although given current weather getting a pitch might have been an issue.

Dont enter a competition if youre not going to fulfil fixtures. Hope Leinster GAA throw the book at Louth and Kildare

Issue was that both teams had nothing to play for. Louth already in S/F after beating both teams. Louth started this by pulling out of their fixture with Wexford so they can train instead to get ready for their S/F against Dublin/Offaly.

O Byrne cup is a mess of a competition!! Maybe they need to move to a knockout competition.

Kildare saying that they cannot field a team due to sigursion cup committments-joke shop-surely they have a panel of at least 40 players at this stage of the season and they cant all be playing Sigursion cup!!-Louth already qualified so they also call off their game v Wexford. This competition is now a farce

There was quite a lot of comment on this forum earlier in the year when a similar incident happened in the Westmeath Junior championship. There was very little sympathy towards the club involved . Now its the competition ( O Byrne Cup ) that's the problem. Its amazing how opinions change depending on who is affected.

Is there such thing as a Westmeath GAA Master Planner?

It should be changed to a knock out competition-all teams get a game and then depending on the luck of an open draw teams might get more games-this is the second year in a row that Westmeath have only played 1 game in this O'Byrne cup comp due to so called dead rubber games and Croke park are letting it happen.Joke of a comp now

It is based on head to head results and not score difference. If it was score difference then the group would still be all to play for though it is most likely Louth would beat Wexford and qualify. Either knockout open draw or else score difference if persisting with groups gotta be better than abandoning it altogether.

Keep it I say.
They are well organised challenge matches. For that reason they are worth it

Sigerson cup has started and it's an extremely competitive environment for young players to show their inter county credentials. Jonathan Lynam appeared as a late sub for UCD last night. Wonder have we any other players involved? Sean Leech and Ciaran Daly were on Maynooth side that won Freshers league but don't think Freshers are eligible for Sigerson.

Is Charlie Drumm not playing with UCD ? Andrew Daly of Lomans with TUD and Joseph Moran of The Downs playing with GMIT or whatever they are called now. Must be more surely.

Michael Byrne of athlone with ATU Galway , Fola of Lomans with IT Sligo aswell. I've notice Westmeath aren't greatly represented in singers on this year

Think Charlie is on Erasmus, so had to opt out.

We have always been under represented at Sigerson level. Ideally Westmeath GAA should have a hub in Athlone IT giving players scholarships there would have our young players playing at a higher level in college. Again, you would need Athlone IT to get back into Sigerson. As they were relegated to the Trench Cup in 2020.

Match Report from that relegation final showed we had 4 Westmeath players playing. P Nestor (Rosemount), N Harte (TPass), B Sayeh (Rosemount) and C Mannion (Garrycastle)

The issue in the Westmeath Junior Football Championship was : 1) A team who had qualified for the quarter final did not fulfill their last round robin game. 2) They did fulfill there quarter final fixture. 3) Two teams finished level on points in the same group. The game between these two teams finished level. Scoring difference could not be used because of the walk over. Both these teams were advancing to the quarter finals. A play off was needed to decide placings. This took
place just days before the quarter final fixtures. Hope this is helpful .
