Replying To A_Chairde:  "We had this conversation recently, only a select number of players from the 2021/2020 u20 teams have made it to the senior set up. Charlie Drumm has looked at home until his injury. Eoin Mulvihill and Shane Allen currently showing well off the bench, Sam and Senan are established starters and then after that youre looking at Darragh Seery, Brandon Kelly, O Sullivan, Bracken and Tj cox as players that got senior game time. But it requires a huge amount of commitment to be a senior intercounty player, balancing studies and careers with three or four nights of ball or gym a week. Andy Mc Cormack has showed that its never too late to make the step up. Dont mean to go down this rabbit hole again, an u23 Development Squad would be an extra burden for clubs with players already with county u20s/Senior squads. On a related note the move to u18 and u20 grades for clubs can only be good."
Was at the shamrocks game today in milltowmpass coroon still has it brandon kelly very good taking to milltowmpass club man how he wasn't looked at this year is strange has loads of potential

We're lucky that Down are currently leading Clare as this has been possibly our worst half in the league, two points up somehow after being outplayed, Sligo have dominated but have kicked wide after wide, Heslin is on the bench and likely to be introduced very soon. Great Westmeath crowd here in but disappointing fair so far.

Second half has been similar so far except Sligo have located their scoring boots, worryingly lacklustre display by Westmeath against a side playing a dead rubber

Promotion achieved which is significant achievement, credit to the players and Management, we need div 2 football to improve and it's a great start to the year, disappointing display in Sligo but ultimately a trip to Croke Park next Saturday evening for a league final is a bonus, div 2 next year will be interesting with neighbours Roscommon, Meath and Cavan along with Cork, Louth, Monaghan and Down.

Finally promoted which is great to see but with a scoreline like that today you'd wonder.
We got lucky vs Clare with a goal they got which was wrongly disallowed & well down should've had us beaten with all the wides they kicked last weekend.
Nonetheless promotion is promotion & hopefully we can get a win in the league final next week. Will need to improve though
Good to see heslin back.

Well done on promotion. Disappointment for us as I think we probably had enough over the course of the league but threw it away against Clare and Offaly. Best of luck next year.

Performance lacked intensity especially in second half, but initial goal for the year achieved, so congratulations to all involved. Big 4 weeks ahead and westmeath in a good place. Bonus game next week. Great westmeath crowd in sligo

It was a very tight league but after being close last year I think we deserved to go up despite today.
We need to play well next weekend but I think we will as Croke Park seems to suit our lads.Good luck in Connacht.

Funny I was thinking the exact same as you except I expected to win with a bit too spare, turns out I was right. Congratulations on your promotion but less of the cockiness.

Well done Sligo. Yee were far better team today!

I wouldn't worry about Mick; he is a bit out of touch.. Westmeath didn't turn up today & it was their worse performance of the year. I'd expect a very different performance next Saturday.

A lot of injuries in the squad currently which is making it very challenging for the management. Promotion was the target at the start of the league and it's great that was achieved. They will certainly be going all out to win a National title next Saturday even though the first round of the championship is the following weekend.

Great to see such a big crowd of supporters from Westmeath hope they turn up next Saturday too even though it been televised . Sligo were the better team on the day they missed a sight of points in the first half too don't know why they took off Robbie and Nigel thought they were doing well especially Nigel laying off a lot of ball it went down hill after that Kieran Martin should be brought on for the second half in fairness he is a fierce danger but hasnt got the legs for a full game

Just back from Sligo and mission accomplished-promotion achieved so well done to management and squad.Very flat performance all over the park with onw exception for me-I thought Andy McCormack put in a huge effort today.Fair play to Sligo-well deserving of their victory -much stronger and fitter

Absolutely abysmal performance today . Incredible how flat we were given so much on the line . Lot of lads gave up the ghost early in 2nd half didn't wanna know about it. Credit due for gaining promotion but that performance today has to set off alarm bells . Serious improvement needed for the final , Martin can't be starting better as an impact. Win against down is huge now to lift morale for championship

Cockiness? This is a Westmeath football thread and anyone is allowed to give their opinion. I don't think it was that outrageous to say that Westmeath should beat Sligo with a bit to spare. It didn't happen, and Sligo deserved their win. Congratulations on retaining div 3 status, but if you don't like what's said here, I suggest you stick to the Sligo thread.

well done to the team and management on their promotion . id say half way through the 2nd half thoughts
had turned to next saturday we seemed to totally shut off from that point . andy mcormack had a massive game today .
good to see heslin getting game time . sligo looked more hungry for the game but as one poster said earlier im out of touch so what would i know . very pleasent trip to sligo

Replying To mickcunningham:  "we have no god given right to win anything but this team deserves to win . the point im making in my posts is that the team has an inner confidence which was lacking last year . the team has self belief and will relish playing in division 2. on another note i think clare are a better team than down and i think they will beat them ."
Now that statement backfired big time

Earlier poster had it right when commenting that we need a big performance next Saturday, We can't afford a heavy defeat next Saturday and go into championship on the back of three games without winning. Big prize at stake but a similar display to today will be unacceptable, Sligo would not have been flattered had the margin been 10-12 points, as it was they won the second half 1-10 to 0-5, fitness seemed an issue but that might be freshness, if we lose on Saturday we're prob depending on Leinster final appearance to qualify for Sam Maguire as Clare or a division 4 Munster side guaranteed Munster final, our league final is arguably the one with potentially the biggest prize of all four next weekend. Dessie is commenting about players being tired, I hope they enjoy a few deserved pints tonight together and are given the week off before Down game. Tactically we know Down, the extra game could help before championship.

From I believe with a Div 3/4 team going to reach Munster final, Westmeath (unless they reach Leinter Final) will be in Tailteann Cup again this summer

The winners of the div 3 league final next week have a chance to make the all Ireland series. However this is only possible if Kildare, Fermanagh or a team that finished below them in division 3/4 don't reach provincial final. If this happens then the only way the way the winner of next weekends final can reach all Ireland series is if they get to provincial final themselves.

If Westmeath lose next weekend we are definitely in Tailteann. If we win we must then must beat Kildare or if we lose to them we best hope Louth beat them in S/F.

Whenever happens next weekend I hope Dessie is looking at beating Wicklow, Kildare and then Louth to reach Lenister final.
