Yes, Garrycastle are in trouble and it's easy to see why. As well as Gardiner and O'Halloran, there are actually two Monaghan brothers gone travelling this year, Conor Cosgrove has retired, and as well as the suspended Mark McCallon they have been without arguably their best player, Eoin Mulvihill, since half time in the Shandonagh game. On top of all that, Justin Barrett got injured after 15 minutes on Friday before eventually being replaced soon after half time. This has had a knock-on affect on their Junior team which has lost all their best players to senior. Having said that, Moate were impressive and even a full strength Garrycastle would have strugggled against them. They look well placed to qualify for the quarter finals and could be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years.

Makes sense Midlands as their junior side should be reasonably competitive, losing 7-8 regulars from their senior side is a tough ask of any club, their stalwarts like Doran Harte, John Gaffey and James Dolan can't be expected to do the heavy lifting at this stage. They can't be written off yet and they will target wins in their remaining matches, the Junior football championship looks wide open this year, favourites like Kilbeggan and Joseph's have struggled against Ballycomoyle and likes of The Downs or Loman's will fancy going to the final. Yes and they should go close to winning the u19 title with all those young lads coming through. Darragh Lowry and Harry Niall are two players Dessie will be looking at for 2024 .

Athlone and garrycastle could be fighting a relegation if they get results soon Mattyreilly (Westmeath) - Posts: 167 - 09/07/2023 19:53:13 2493425 Link 0 |
County champions The Downs looking a pale shadow of the team that played a Leinster club final few months ago. Decidedly lucky to draw tonight with Killucan and they are joint bottom of Section A after two rounds. They're missing some players like Niall Mitchell and Andrew Kilmartin but a semi final spot is going to be a challenge for them now. They'll have to get minimum five points in remaining matches. Hard to see past the downs and Lomans in junior. None of the sole junior clubs look good, Ballycomoyle fought off relegation last year and looked very poor outfit against shamrocks 3rd team in D6 league final

After leaving the park yesterday evening I had a look back at there team from Leinster final and yesterday they were missing 6. Niall Mitchell Andrew Kilmartin Kevin o Sullivan mark Kelly Conor coughlan and also Ciaran Nolan. That is a lot to be missing to be fair to them. Killucan we're by far the better team and should have won only for a lucky downs goal. Can be easily seen what killucan can achieve if they all commit !

The champions were very poor again last night v Killucan. Incredibly nearly stole it with a late goal to go a point up but Killucan kicked a levelling free with the last play of the game. Kinnegad up next for The Downs so if they cant lift it for that then they are in trouble. I am counting at least 7 lads missing from Leinster Final - Mark Kelly, Conor Coughlan, Peter Murray (came on late yesterday), Kevin OSullivan, Andrew Kilmartin, Niall Mitchell, Ciaran Nolan. Sure that's almost half the team. Can't see them beating Kinnegad on current form but wins v Tyrrellspass and Caulry is doable. Can't see past Lomans or Kinnegad as champions this year. Also Lomans look best placed for the junior I think as The Downs are losing too many players to senior. Wouldn't rule out Kilbeggan or Josephs kicking into gear either.

I got to one game this weekend and I wished I had stayed at home for the majors of it. St. Lomans and Kinnegad played out the draw in the end. The game didn't get going until the last 20 minutes and it has to be said that style of play from both teams was a sight to behold. Lateral, slow, defensive, keep ball at any cost football. The introduction of Peter Foy and Shane Dempsey gave the game the spark it needed but It must be said that I'm not sure how long Paddy Dowdall will get away with not starting his strongest team. TJ Cox was injured which was a big loss but Danny McCartan picked up where he left off with a super game. Chances are had Dempsey and Foy started the game could have been over well before the final kick of the game. Foy especially, from wing back was an outstanding, scoring and creating scores. His kicking of the ball and his runs at pace changed the spirit of the game. Kinnegad will be relieved with the draw but it's another feather in their cap that St. Lomans can't seem to put them away. Very similar to The Downs last year. I see a Kinnegad vs Lomans final, and my gut is starting to tell me that this is Kinnegads year. I stated earlier in the week that the Lomans defence needs improving and it showed again with the Kinnegad goal coming from sloppy passing at the back where a nothing situation put Kinnegad ahead. St. Lomans replied straight away but they won't get the chance in other games. All in all, it was a demoralizing game for supporters, the modern game at its worst for the majority of it. County players Sam McCartan, Heslin and O'Toole below par for the majority until the final quarter. Kinnegad were very poor but again, got the draw, and that's encouraging for them. The only unbeaten team in Westmeath top tier football this year. so far.

Kinnegad very poor for majority of game and yet drew with best team in the county?? Strange statement. Kinnegad's record in the round Robin vs Loman's is actually very good, not sure draw on Saturday will make them believe they'll beat them in knockout stages. No TJ, no Kelvin, Foy and Dempsey didn't start, Heslin and O' Toole scoring 1 point from play between them, that won't happen too often, Loman's looked like they were in second gear, both sides likely to make semi final directly so can only then meet in final. I'd say Loman's strong favourites but maybe you're right. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2152 - 10/07/2023 12:27:12 2493547 Link 0 |
Was at the double header in Moate on saturday-Tyrellpass v Caulry and Athlone v Tang-2 very enjoyable open games with a lot of attacking play and some but not a huge amount of this sideways/backwards muck we have to put up with now-all 4 sides gave it a go.But fair play to Moate GAA for having the pitch in such fantastic shape.I know at this time of the year you would all pitches to be good but they have to be maintained-cut/rolled/marked so fair play to Moate for great work done. Here here. Two excellent games. Caulry full value for their win against Tyrrellspass. Should have won by more however tyrrellspass never gave up. Kevin Maguire, Steven Connolly, the two Bakers and young O'Donovan were immense. Dolan and Moran old heads at the back and Conor McCormack made a huge impact off the bench. Athone will be disappointed with their loss. Both teams very well matched and a great win for Tang. The goal they got in the first half was brilliant Athlone and Garrycastle in a dogfight to stay up already Mountlin (Westmeath) - Posts: 59 - 10/07/2023 15:46:25 2493615 Link 0 |
After the second round things become a little clearer. No surprise in Senior A, Lomans, Kinnegad are certs to make the semis. Downs were very bad against Killucan but they should still make it through probably with Caulry. Left Full (Westmeath) - Posts: 255 - 10/07/2023 16:19:50 2493634 Link 0 |
There were a couple of notable wins last weekend. St. Joseph's. And particularly Loughnavalley. These are significant in the promotion of the game. Icehouse (Westmeath) - Posts: 81 - 13/07/2023 13:48:00 2494130 Link 2 |
Well done Loughnavalley. Would anyone know when their last win would have been before this? Keep up the good work.
