The only benefit to all this talk of Tailteann cup or go for a Connacht final is if we do lose to NY or Sligo which both are possible anyway then we can have the ready excuse of we were playing for a Tailteann cup. I can see the benefits of both Connacht run and Tailteann cup and the argument of u want to lose by 20+ points is absurd. The reality is we have a league campaign starting Sunday so can we pause the championship talk until after the league please

A lot of people saying they don't want us to reach the Connacht final in order to get thrashed. Well I'd rather lose by 50 points to Ro*****on than lose by 1 point to NY/Sligo/London. So there. And the Connacht final thrashing (cos let's face it, we're gonna get thrashed, don't say you won't love it so you can be proved right) will be followed by three more competitive games against good opposition (thrashed), which is exactly (thrashed) what we've been crying out for for (thrashed) ages.

Sorry... I've let you people get it into my head too much that we're gonna get thrashed, I think I developed a bit of keyboard Tourette's there...

Replying To southleitrim_mafia:  "Below is how I'd like to see the championship restructured. I believe it will give more game time to players and expose junior and intermediate footballers to a higher level of football. In Leitrim's last competitive game only one player got game time who was below senior grade at club level. That was Conor Reynolds of Annaduff. If 2023 follows the same fixture plan as 2022 the most competitive games a senior club can possibly play is 15. This is ignoring the spring league which is only a mickey mouse competition if we are being serious. The league will run from 27th of May until the 5th Aug and championship from 12th Aug until 14th of Oct. 15 weekends of football with 6 breaks.

Restructure:

1. I would exclude all clubs second teams from competing against first teams.

2. The 24 clubs would be split between 3 division's for league and championship. Each division having 8 teams. Division 3 and Junior would have 7 that is expecting St Osnit's won't enter a team.

3. League. The league would run on a round robin basis all teams playing each other once and the top two competing in the league final as usual. It would begin a week earlier on the 20th of May and conclude on the 22nd of July. Maximum of 8 games with 2 weekends without games.

4. Club championships. The club championships would be reduced to the three competitions senior, intermediate and junior (second team competitions would be separate). reduced from 10 to 8 teams per division. Two groups of four will be drawn with each team playing each other once. Top two in each group progress to Semi finals and bottom two compete in relegation playoffs with one team being relegated. Winners of intermediate to be promoted to senior and vice versa for junior. Championship reduced from maximum 7 games to maximum 5 games. the 5 games played from 29th July to 9th Sept with two weekends of breaks.

5. Regional/Divisonal Competition.
All Leitrim clubs broken into 4 regions North, South, East and West.

North region South region East region West region
Manorhamilton Mohill Ballinamore St Marys
Melvin Gaels Gortletteragh Fenagh Leitrim Gaels
Dromahair Eslin Aughawillan Allen Gaels
Drumkeerin Cloone Aughnasheelin Annaduff
St Osnits? Aughavas Kiltubrid Bornacoola
Glenfarne/Kilty Carrigallen Drumreilly
Ballinaglera

Competition will consist of 12 teams, the 8 senior clubs and 4 regional teams.

St Marys
Mohill
Leitrim Gaels
Fenagh
Ballinamore
Aughawillan
Manorhamilton
Gortletteragh
North Region (Melvin, Dromahair, Drumkeerin, St Osnits, Glenfarne)
South Region (Eslin, Cloone, Aughavas, Carrigallen)
East Region (Aughnasheelin, Kiltubrid, Drumreilly, Ballinaglera)
West Region ( Allen Gaels, Bornacoola, Annaduff)

*Manor and Gort down as senior club as they won senior relegation semi finals 2022

Team relegated from senior in 2023 to join there respective divisional team and winners of intermediate to compete on there own in regional competition for the following season. Winners of senior, intermediate and junior championships to still represent Leitrim in Connacht club championships. The 12 teams are split into 4 groups of 3. Top two teams in each group progress to quarter finals. Bottom team in each group progress to Shield competition. Winner receives Packy McGarty Cup. Competition would begin on 23rd of Sept and conclude on 22nd of Oct. each team getting a minimum of three games and maximum of 5.

The summer club schedule is below.

League
Round 1 - 20th May
Round 2 - 27th May
Round 3 - 3rd June
Break - 10th June
Round 4 - 17th June
Round 5 - 24th June
Break - 1st July
Round 6 - 8th July
Round 7 - 15th July
Final - 22nd July

Club Championships
Round 1 - 29th July
Round 2 - 5th Aug
Round 3 - 12th Aug
Break - 19th Aug
Semi Final - 26th Aug
Break - 2nd Sept
Final - 9th Sept

Regional Competition
Break - 16th Sept
Round 1 - 23rd Sept
Round 2 - 30th Sept
Quarter Final - 7th Oct
Semi Final - 14th Oct
Final - 22nd Oct"
This is really well put together, kudos to you. Two observations, one petty, forgive me:
1.
Regional Competition
Break - 16th Sept
Round 1 - 23rd Sept
Round 2 - 30th Sept

You're gonna need three rounds. Even though each team will play two group games, you can't play A v B, A v C and B v C in two weeks.

2. What if your regional competition was the competition? That is, what if the senior championship had the senior clubs as normal plus these regional combinations of non-senior clubs? Like what they do down the country. Check it out. In this way every player could potentially win a senior championship medal, even if he's with an intermediate or junior club. Of course these regional teams wouldn't be eligible for the Connacht club championship, so you'd have to decide the Connacht club representatives another way, such as a separate championship between just the senior clubs (like in Kerry), or the best performing senior club in the championship (like what we do when a second team wins Intermediate or Junior), or whatever. And of course you can't relegate a regional team so you'd have to be a bit more inventive regarding relegation. Maybe playoffs between senior clubs who don't make the knockout stages, I dunno. All the senior clubs might make the knockout stages. The whole format might need looking at, but it's only hypothetical of course.

IMO Tailteann cup should only be discussed if Leitrim happen to be in it this summer. You have to travel to New York first in the championship and Sligo got nothing easy against them last year.

Right now the focus is the league and Leitrim should be aiming for promotion. It's arguably a weaker Division 4 than the one Leitrim gained promotion from in 2019 so another trip to Croke Park could be on the horizon.

I was being facetious, not puerile I hope. I wanted to treat this defeatist notion, the notion that we'd be better off failing against another Div 4 team, or even a non-league team, and gloriously dodging a Connacht final, with the respect it deserves.

We can only stand back with mouths open in awe at the high level Sligo GAA is performing at currently.

Well there isn't a hope of Roscommon making a Connacht final this year so we wouldn't have to worry about that scenario anyway.

The London game going to be a big banana skin fixture for Sligo in the Championship.

I see Wexford had 2 lads sent off. I wonder if that had any impact on game or was it all in the final minutes.

The less said about the first half the better.. Total different team in the second half. Attack and defence much improved. Some very good performance overall. Wishing Aidan Flynn all the best in his recovery after what looks to be a nasty injury and hoping Casey injury isn't serious. Now onto next week

Toppen result. Heavy weather in the first half but kicked up a gear. Important for scoring difference hopefully.

Big win against a team we usually struggle to put away over the years, we were poor in the middle half of first half but that 2nd half perfomance was excellent.
Down side is bad injury to aiden flynn, his season could be over already which is a shame for him and the squad.
Hopefully casey just a low grade hamstring injury
Tom prior looked good off the bench, paul keaney also couple nice scores off the bench.
3-18 with out ryan a big score
