Replying To FoolsGold:  "The new Leitrim jersey doesn't look great. A big red sponsor with the green and yellows colours"
I wonder what leitrim supporters think.

I heard from someone who was at the launch last night that the Jersey looked fabulous and the red blended in very well

There's not a thing wrong with it. The red blends in nicely as under the red there's an underprint of yellow. Anyhow as long as the results on the field are right, I'll not be worrying one bit about the jersey. Fair play to Pat Gallagher & family for sponsoring Leitrim, Pat has always been a very generous man to anything involving Leitrim.

I suppose they really had to retire the one we Americans overcame last year. The Irish generally don't like outsiders being better than them at Gaelic games: a development that y'all are only going to see more of in the coming years.

Btw, has Cavan ever changed the county jersey since 1952?

No, I think they've been wearing the same ones ever since then. One of them got torn asunder in a game but they sewed it back together. Go on Cavan!

Sorry didn't mean to cause offence. I just thought Leitrim had nicer jerseys in recent years

No worries, if that is our only issue in the year ahead it will be a great year.

By the way everyone appears to love the jersey

Replying To Redlad6:  "What team has enough players coming through to compete with Carrick in the next 3 to 5 years"
Alot of Carrick Team are young and will want to travel is only way i can see them not dominating, Unfortunately alot of club teams are dying a death due to emigration and not been able to keep young lads, Glenfarne,Cloone,Eslin,Bornacoola,Drumreilly all really struggling, Can't see Aughnashielan (If more lads are gone to australia), Carigallen or Drumkeerin getting out of the intermediate grade any time soon, Allen Gaels,Kiltubrid and Ballinaglera will likely be competing for next year's intermediate title, Gortletragh/Dromohair 1 of the 2 will likely go down next year, Annaduff are an improving team with a good squad of players if they stay up next year they will be there for the long haul and could even be competing near the top in future years, Aughawillan more likely to stay at Senior Level for another few years always seem to produce some good footballers, The Rest should all be fine at Senior Level, Fenagh are further on then likes of leitrim gaels (Moreton and Bruen big losses), Manorhamilton even Ballinamore, I'd be slightly concerned about mohill squad only made what 1 sub in county final and their second string was relegated from the junior final, Kennedy Is a leader they'll want him to stay for another year

Yes population is going to play a huge part in who continues the rise to the top and unfortunately it will determine who falls towards the bottom. I'd suggest Annaduff's rise is due to an increase in population owing to the fact young families can settle there and commune to Dublin if needs be for work. Obviously the main reason is the huge effort they have put into coaching over the last Nunber of years there is no substance for hard work. It's surprising that bornacoola aren't seeing the same rise on the pitch as they are also well situated for young families to locate and have the train service directly to Dublin. Maybe the same work isn't going in or just haven't seen the benefits of the population yet. Going down to junior might not be the worst thing in the world to happen them if they can start building again.
At this early stage I can see St Mary's winning the championship next year as they are best equipped to deal
With players emigrating I believe all teams will face this.
Allen Geals will win the intermediate I think they have a large squad and will be adding a few from the minor team this year which will help them.
Bornacoola will most likely win the junior championship. They aren't as much an aging team as cloone and Glenfaren

This might seem a mad proposal but I was wondering would there be any appetite for a cross border competition at senior level between Longford and Leitrim. I know at underage this has been going for about 10 years at various age groups. The games in it seem to be largely competitive as your matching teams with similar skill levels.

From the outside Longford club football looks very similar to over here in Leitrim. You've a handful of teams that can realistically win the senior championship. A few mid table teams that won't progress but won't get relegated either. Then the bottom two teams of senior and top 3-4 of intermediate that are too good for intermediate but not good enough for senior. This trend follows on then down into junior A.

Could there be a way to have a cross-border competition before the club championships and after the intercounty season. This would be pushing the league back earlier in the year but the reality is no one gives a toss about the league anyway (well in leitrim we don't). You'd have the best teams in both counties playing regular, competitive and high level football. I think it'd be a win win for both counties. People might say we don't have the time to fit in these extra games but it's well known that the best counties play the most club games (Tyrone, Kerry).

You could also then use this same model for u20/21's. In Leitrim this competition has really fallen behind in the past few years but perhaps more competitive games like St Mary's vs Clongusih would rejuvenate it

it didn't really work at underage level, too many games postponed and too much travelling for some clubs. in 2023 it didn't happen at all bar maybe a few games at U13 level and that comp wasn't finished. logistics and time slots for the competition would be an issue.

Maybe it could be ran off mid week between May and July when pitches are hard and students are off college, alongside the normal league? Would not be a runner otherwise, just a bunch of conceded games due to lack of players/pitches available.. But i do think it would be better followed than the Spring League

Yes the Spring league is a waste of time and should be replaced with the normal league. Tbh it's always the same clubs that forfeit these games and I believe harsher punishments should be handed out. I'm not talking about rural teams that can't actually field because of low numbers. But the same north Leitrim team that enters teams in competitions only to forfeit half the games cause they can't be bothered travelling. The reality is a cross border competition can work. I'd say 80% of Leitrim clubs are within 50 mins of Ballymahon the furthest Longford club from Leitrim.

Also the cross border underage competition was working brilliantly up until covid 19. We have a great habit of shooting any idea down in leitrim. The reality is if we need to try something new (cross border comp, regional comp etc). We've been trying this current model for over a 100 years and all we've to show for it is 2 connacht championships and a few FBD tea cups.

I don't think anyone is shooting it down but the reality is the cross county league didn't work this year, a lot of games conceded.

i also wonder with virtually all our surrounding counties now using U12, 14, 16, 18, while we are still U13, 15, & 17, is this something we need look at, even in relation to playing challenge games in these counties. Cavan, Longford, Fermanagh and i believe Sligo all using the even numbers.

What do we think of this proposal? A fierce kick in the teeth to anyone involved in Leitrim hurling let's be honest and doesn't say much for the priorities of the GAA.

Gortletteragh tried to start up the hurling again a few years ago and they did get some opposition from within the club. But astoundingly they got next to no support from the county board if anything they were met with resistance I'm not too sure why. Croke Park sent down DJ Carey to do a few sessions with coaches and various different age groups he was meant to do a few weeks block of sessions etc. By the sounds of things he done what he does best and took the money (not Gortletteraghs money) done one session and was never seen from again.

Disgraceful but unfortunately not surprising. "The money saved will used to promote the game within those counties". There's spin and there's pure BS. This falls within the latter

Word on the street is that Andy Moran has anyone that can kick a ball up training with the county panel . Fair play to him . Good to hear he's keeping his panel tight knit . No paddy Maguire , Keith beirne or Paul Keaney involved this year.
