I heard on Galway Bay FM that Kilbeacanty drop to Junior no matter what. Is this true? What's the point of their next match v Kinvara if this is true? SouthGalway (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 08/09/2025 22:22:38 2635409 Link 0 |
Oh absolutely and that was not a pop at Maigh cuillinn I juut dont see them getting within 10 points of a wounded Loughrea but at the start of the year they would have absolutely taking a premim QF and safety. Cappy Ardrahan Gort & Kilconieron would snap your hand off to be in Moycullens shoes.

Absolutely no point whatsoever and complete waste of 2 weekends. Top two from every group into Quarter Finals and goodbye to 3rd place. Junior next year is Kilbeacanty, Annaghdown, Sylane, Abbeyknockmoy, Craughwell, Turloughmore, Athenry, Clarinbridge, Cappataggle, Loughrea, Liam Mellows, sarsfields, Oranmore-Maree, St Thomas',Kiltormer and Ballinasloe. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2710 - 09/09/2025 11:19:48 2635434 Link 1 |
There would be some craic IF Kilbeacanty WON the Intermediate Championship after finishing 3rd in their group and getting relegated to Junior...how would Mr Hurling Board.com solve that one!! Luckily for hurling board there is no chance of Kilbeacanty winning PQF, QF,SF and Final. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2710 - 09/09/2025 12:10:14 2635443 Link 1 |
That's a quirk of the restructuring to be fair. Where they finished ahead of Turlough's B team who can't go to Junior because they'll be in a seperate competition for B teams from next year on. So Kilbeacanty are being relegated by virtue of finishing behind Rahoon and Beagh who are going to stayin in Intermediate for next year. But on the existing rules where 3 get out of the group, they finished 3rd this year and thus are still int he championship. The bigger question of should 3 teams get out of the group in the first place has been done to death so no need for explaination there! I did not see your post as a pop at anybody but thinking that a prelim. QF would satisfy them, I fear not as I said they are noted for refusing to trow in the towel.I could also have a mistaken view of them but my only insight is the view from the sideline.

Premier Junior next year is Kilbeacanty, Annaghdown, Sylane, Abbeyknockmoy, Kiltormer, Ballinasloe, Bearna, Salthill, Breathnachs, Spideal all second teams play in the Reeves Cup

"Reeves Cup" would be the likes of Athenry Turlough Clareinbridge ie there 2nd teams is it? Are they still in premier junior and just kept seperate? Ie 1st teams likes of Sylan Annaghdown Spiddal etc kept to one side?

That's a joke because whoever gets relegated from "Intermediate " next year would hammer those teams! The majority of those premier Junior teams with the exemption of Abbeyknockmoy will never see the light of "Intermediate " hurling for a very very long time. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2710 - 09/09/2025 16:28:22 2635484 Link 1 |
There's a similar system in Donegal football, from what I understand. Foirne tacaíochta or 'reserve' teams play in their own championships. I can see the logic in it. If a lad isn't good enough to play for his own club's first team, then he wouldn't be good enough for county. But you could have an outstanding player at a lower level first team club. It'd be unlikely but possible. There was also the fact that some Junior A second teams were playing lads who later play in the senior championship, in the early rounds of Junior A, as it starts a few weeks earlier. Lads who'd be just outside the limit for being named as first team regrades. This wasn't fair on the teams who met them early in the championship. We should be looking at growing the game across the county as much as possible. Why would you limit yourself to a smaller pick? I do think something like a divisional team might be a good idea in future. There are lads in non-hurling strongholds who could be every bit of good, if they got the exposure to better competition and coaching. The Connolly brothers would likely have never picked up a hurl only for their father got sick and the family moved from Leitir Móir to Castlegar. I would be in favour of having divisional teams...East,South, North and City/West coming back into the Championship at the knockout stage. For example let the City/West Clubs play with their respective Clubs for the Premier Junior Championship and then have a combined Galway City/West team excluding Rahoon-Newcastle and Liam Mellows enter the Intermediate Championship.

Are they kept seperated? I agree that the stronger teams will all be 2nd teams bar Kiltormer but they will be hoping to get promoted & win jun A this year.

All this premier nonsense. Can it not be Senior Inter and Junior with all first teams in these competitions. Then a side competition for any club that wants to enter a B team and grade accordingly and let them play amongst themselves. CillTormoir (Galway) - Posts: 577 - 10/09/2025 10:23:03 2635538 Link 3 |
A good idea but you see how long it's taking to install a 16 team senior and intermediate championship, first you had to drop to 16 senior teams plus 8 fake senior aka senior B.Next year will see 16 senior and 16 intermediate but inter. will include B teams from senior clubs and junior can have B teams from the two higher devisions. I think B teams should be assigned a separate competition stream with a grading system similar to the regular teams.I feel we may be a number of years from this happening.

Yes it will be the likes of "Athenry, Turlough, Clarinbridge". No they will just compete in a standalone competition with no promotion. So, the winners of Junior will now be able to represent Galway in the junior All-Ireland series which hasn't been the case in the past.

That is exactly how it is from next year. The Reeves Cup is a standalone competition for the "B Teams"

So this famous Reeves Cup aka Junior A will have 16 teams with no promotion to Premier Junior and no relegation from Premier Junior! I've heard someone say there is a Junior B team currently in the Co. Semi Final and they are good enough to win Junior B,Junior A and Premier Junior over the next two years but they won't be allowed upto Premier Junior because of being a traditional Clubs 2nd team yet when they win the Junior B this year they can represent Galway in the All Ireland series But when they win the Junior A next year they can't represent Galway in the All Ireland series!! Yet they are plenty good to beat most of those Premier Junior Clubs! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2710 - 10/09/2025 16:30:38 2635619 Link 1 |
Second teams have never been allowed to represent Galway, even under the current system. That's the same in both codes and in every county.
