Replying To galway19:  "Fortunately Kilkenny are nowhere near good enough to give anyone a lesson at the moment. They struggled for large parts against Westmeath two weeks ago. They will be hard working and tough as always but they shouldn't have enough to quality to beat Galway if Shefflin has our lads on song. Take TJ out of that forward line and it is very poor. Galway by four or five points in the end."
I think you are underestimating Kilkenny's quality quite a bit. Imo they are they a better team than last year. TJ is still the main man in the forwards but they dont rely on him as exclusively as they did over the past couple of years. Eoin Cody is an excellent forward and will give us plenty of it as will Padraig Walsh. Both of them would be definite starters for us up front (or anywhere) if we could have them! Back further, Adrian Mullen at midfield is top class and their full back line potentially is very good. Huw Lawlor is much improved and Butler at corner back is developing into a really good stingy defender. You talk about them struggling for periods against Westmeath but iirc they won by something like 19 points. In previous years when we were going a lot better than we are now we have struggled late into games to overcome the likes of Laois and Offaly (not to mind Carlow). I share the general pessimism of Galway supporters about this game. My prediction is Kilkenny by 3 points. However many is the time when Galway fans are pessimistic the team surprises us and I am hoping to be surprised on this occasion!

I hope you are right but I would be a small bit pessimistic. I have a limited understanding of hurling but the way i see it there are 3 key ingredients that differentiate teams ; skill, strength/physicality & pace.
You might argue that fitness and passion are also important but you have to expect at this stage that the top county teams will be as well prepared in terms of fitness and motivation as they can be and this should not be a major differentiating factor.
I would also say that while skill is a definite factor there is not a massive difference between the skill levels across the top counties, all these players are very skillful at this point.
The big differentiators are speed and physicality. These are the things that make Limerick and Waterford a cut above the rest and unfortunately , in my opinion, we are a little behind currently.
While we were well the better team versus Wexford , I was a bit disappointed , subsequently, at how much physically stronger Dublin looked than Wexford ( I know that Wexford ran them to a point which contradicts my theory a bit but I honestly think Dublin are well ahead of Wexford...and us , because of the physicality edge).
Kilkenny are a different animal . I dont think they are strong enough for Limerick , but I do think they have a slight edge on us in all 3 of the ingredients mentioned at the start and this is going to be difficult to overcome,
Hoping I'm wrong at that home advantage may help Galway to turn this one around.

I think your right. Kilkennys physicality will be too much for Galway. We have no match for Wally Walsh. Conor Cooney, GMAc & Joseph Cooney while all playing well at the moment all look like theyve lost weight & size. Not sure is this a good thing. Especially when you add in the likes of Concannon & Niland. I hope Cianan Fahy gets the start this weekend though, he is one young lad that has a bit of size but also well able to hurl. We will need strength and power if we are going to even contemplate beating Limerick at some stage later on.

Walter Walsh is around along time I don't remember him bullying Galway before with his size. Nothing GMAC, P.Mannion or F.Burke haven't encountered before.

The 2012 final replay did happen, much as we all probably wish it didn't

Your not remembering too far back so... do you not remember when he beat up Galway on his own when he was only a young lad on the biggest day of all. I hate recalling it but you made me.

All the players you mention would match up well with Walter. I think we'll handle him ok. It was Cody's cleverness in placing him with a height advantage on what was then an inexperienced Galway player that led to him doing so much damage to us in the 2012 replay.

Player for player Galway are every bit the match physically for Kilkenny. If anything, people's complaint with this Galway team is it lacks pace but it definitely has physicality. Concannon might not be the biggest but he is going to scare the life out of Lawlor and a rookie corner back in Butler. I honestly don't see why anyone is worried going into this game.

Good points. I'd say Shefflin will have them well warned of this not that they need to be warned. Should be a great match though to see where both teams are at. Galway Abu.

Nickey Brennan in the Independent:

"Brian Cody will not want to be beaten over in Salthill by Henry Shefflin, mark my words," Brennan told Ourgame.ie this week. "I can tell you one thing, if ever he was fired up for a match, take it that this is going to be the one that he'll be fired up for.

"You can't have the pupil beating the master in this one, that's the way he will be looking at it. It's a big call for Henry to go to Galway, he did get the opportunity to work with Cody and he felt that's not the way he wanted to go.

"He got the call from Galway and it was inevitable that he was going to try his hand on the inter-county scene, maybe Galway was far enough from Kilkenny in many respects and he saw it as a clean break."

Well done to King Henry and the Galway hurlers on a great win over Kilkenny today in Pearse Stadium. It's match Galway would probably have lost in previous years. The work rate and level of intensity were huge. Very impressed with Darren Morrissey, Tom Monaghan, Padraig Mannion, Conor Cooney and Brian Concannon but a great team effort all around. Great support for the team in Pearse Stadium.

It was hard to listen to the Kilkenny ones around us there in the stand. Talk about a bunch of moaners all through the game.

Great win.

What a match. I'm still out of breath! Great win for Galway Hurling. Typical tough Kilkenny! Galway are slowly getting better and getting used to one another. Galway Abu! ☘️

Good win for Galway. Good game too. Shaping up to be a winner gets to a Leinster final fixture for us in our last game in Nowlan Park if we can beat Westmeath and Kilkenny and Galway beat Dublin.

Good win for Galway as I expected but its a game we should have won more comfortably instead of the intense finish. We didn't score for 18mins in the 2nd half...that's when we should have drove on and crushed them!! Delighted Galway won.
