Who do we think should be in centre back for us this year? I really think Daithi has to stay in no.3. He's the best full back of his generation and it was a problem position for us for long enough without trying to take him out of it. He's a fine centre back but the loss as full back is a lot greater than the gain at centre back. Genuinely surprised how little they wanted to play Shane Cooney in there, he'd play well in a league game there and then he'd be thrown in corner back which he does not look comfortable in at all. Who else do we think could go in 6?

It appears that it won't be Shane Cooney at no. 6 now. Best of luck to him in his injury recovery. Hope it's successful and as quick as possible. A mountain of a loss to Tom's against B'hale.

Greg definitely not first man to play for castlegar club to play for Galway, but definitely first Ballygar man to play senior hurling for Galway ,

They're probably better off in a roundabout way. We're going to have a proper senior championship now with 8 teams going. The intermediate winners going up would be the 25th best team going in with the top 16. They'd get walloped as intermediate is currently junior standard. 2023 will have good champos at senior, intermediate & junior.

I agree. There's a few teams that have secured senior status (on merit) for next year that I expect will fall back to intermediate fairly quickly. This season's championship had a number of quirky results. As you say, it would make no sense to promote the intermediate champions next year. It's unfortunate but it has to be the way. I hope there's not too much opposition to the proposals but I expect that there will be.

No promotion for 2022 Intermediate winner"
Big changes afoot alright. 8 Intermediate teams to be relegated. The four Senior Clubs second teams (Castlegar, Turloughmore, Clarinbridge and Craughwell ) all dropping to Junior A with no Promotion being allowed up to the new Junior Championship.

Another 4 Intermediate teams drop to the new Junior Championship to join the 5 pure Junior clubs ( Ml Breathnachs, Salthill Knocknacarra, Bearna Furbo, Ballygar and Skehanagh/Mountbellew. The remaining Junior clubs Ballinasloe, Tuam and Menlo Emmets will be given the option of joining the pure Junior competition. Winners of this competition are promoted to Intermediate and represent Galway in the provincial and All Ireland competitions.

So no promotion from Intermediate or Junior A this year. Senior Clubs second teams will drop two divisions to Junior A with no promotion being allowed back up to the new Junior competition. Pure Junior clubs will leap frog Senior Clubs second teams.

Overall will be seriously competitive championships at all levels.

C'ship for first year with no promotion wont have anything competitive about it.
At Junior level it will see an end to a lot of the pure Junior clubs in existence.
Could see legal objections as in the past, by some clubs who have their house in order & who end up being demoted or not promoted for no reason other than the Board failing to deal with this issue over the years.
How are teams who might be tied on points be separated for relegation & were they notified of these changes in advance, if you were the team that was safe last year & gave young lads a run to give them experience, not realising that you could actually be relegated as you are the fourth place team, cant see that been accepted.
Years & years of hard work by some clubs gone out the window.

Dont see how added competition is going to cause pure junior clubs to disband. So if every club that gets relegated just gives up where would be?? We've so many clubs in a false position in Galway. So many intermediate level teams at senior level in Galway. The difference in standard was clearly shown when Thomas's the top tier winners played the second tier winners with nearly 30 points the gap. I can't think any other serious hurling county where the gap between top and second winners would nearly be 30 points! Not backing up the Galway county board here who've known about this for a long time. They were the only county to go against it and let's not fool ourselves into thinking we're this humongous hurling county able to justify 24 senior teams, for god sake Cork have nearly 3 times as many clubs as us and they can manage it!! Tipperary able to turn 32 senior teams into a 16. Look at Kilkenny were clubs can climb the ladder and just get on with it. Even Ballyhale went down intermediate as recently as the late 90s. Look at Glenmore, Bennettsbridge they were junior until recent and now are in Senior in Kilkenny on merit and playing at a very high standard even at junior! I don't buy this nonsense of clubs saying if we loose our senior/intermediate/Junior A status it'll be bad for us, how?? If lads only want to play for ye if yer a senior club what does that really say about ye? And I really don't think that's the case. Such a soft mentality amongst a lot people who don't see the benefit of this, even just as a spectacle. Galways record at junior level will show the standard it's been at. No club from Galway has ever won a game outside of Connacht....This isn't just about improving Galway poor record at intermediate and junior club level but improving the standards for Galway. Teams going up the levels will have been playing at a better standard level and better equipped going up.

That's the result of years of kicking the can down the road with no relegation for years clubs writing letters not to get relegated no team went down from intermediate to junior for about 10 years ,, it's time to pay the piper ,,, ,,

It is has to be accepted. This is on the galway hurling board, they've had a few years to prepare for this as they knew it was coming and instead were afraid of upsetting clubs by putting them into the grade they should be

Either you are having a laugh or you must have been on the beer today.
Neither of the 2 players you mentioned or any of the "newbies" proved that they were good enough to be on the panel not to mind secure a championship starting place. They were all equally mediocre. Unless there is a big improvement in the coming weeks , retirements aside our championship starting team wont be much different from what it was last year

I think your missing the point that its 2022 results that will determine who will be relegated not 2021. I think a competition where 50% of the teams will be relegated will be seriously competitive.

On another note wondering if there are many new managers in Senior or Intermediate hurling ?

I was being sarcastic, totally agree with what you have said.
I know Henry wants to try out players and give everyone a chance but it backfired today!
From what I saw today on beosport TV Galway are playing as individuals to try impress Henry for their own position on the panel they are definitely not playing as a team.
That's what happens when you bring in lots of different players........everyone is out for themselves and no team work.
Also I think they need to raise the fitness training up a few knotchs some of the established lads looked bogged....Gmac,N.Burke,P.Mannion,C.Mannion,E.Nilland,E.Murphy

I think for one last throw at limerick, the 'tried & tested' & 'old faces' should be used this year, before we enter a total rebuild. It will be back to the days of quarterfinal exits but it will be for the betterment in longrun. This year however I would like to see C Cooney, Davy Burke, J Flynn, Ado etc starting. While what's coming through isn't poor in quality they are along way off on the S&C side.
