Jason Flynn "past it"? HES 29 YEARS OLD! ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1572 - 12/02/2024 14:47:25 2525671 Link 1 |
I think they mean that he is "past it" performance wise rather than age wise as he goes missing in matches for large spells too often and then pops up now and again and does something spectacular which is not good enough. He was like that at underage also - not sure what the problem is as he has plenty of talent, pace, size etc. but he just doesn't get "stuck in" and win the "dirty" ball like what Whelan does regularly when tightly marked by 3 or 4 opponents. Jason seems to be most effective when brought on as a sub like in the 2017 AI Final when he and Niall Burke scored vital points but he hasn't really done it since in the important games at least.

Did anyone else think that both ends of the Thurles pitch were like a swamp and very ploughed up? Conor Whelan was about to get possession near the goal in the first half and the ball just stuck in the muck. Surely it could have been in better condition than that. tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3326 - 12/02/2024 15:32:55 2525691 Link 1 |
I think Galway are also lacking physical toughness (along with height / strength) in many of the players. Tipp were giving some dirty tackles / verbal abuse yesterday and a lot of the Galway players were not responding to it as they were "too nice". I would like to see a bit more "fire and brimstone" from the players to show that they won't be pushed around too easily. For example St. Thomas's have that in spades - the likes of Fintan, David, Darragh, Eanna and Bernard Burke will not be pushed around by anyone. Sylvie Linnane and Pete Finnerty from the 80's teams were other examples. That is another issue for Shefflin & co. to work on! tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3326 - 12/02/2024 16:04:35 2525702 Link 2 |
Tommyk I'd consider thurles as having one of the best surfaces in country..however bothe ends yesterday looked to be in an awful state..I do think that allowances have to be made due to the almost constant rain and a lot of it is localised..I saw a picture of thurles from a couple of hours before match and there is no way match would have taken place with tha amount of water on pitch..I thought Walsh park was the same yesterday, ball getting stuck, players not able to rise it and ground cutting up badly..only place that looked in excellent condition was cork but remember what that was like when it was reopened.. For a change Tommy, I'm in total agreement with you! You're learning lad!

Thomas Monaghan and Kevin Cooney (to name just two) were around the panel, in and out of the panel for quite a few years before they "clicked". Defenders is an experience game. And you learn a lot quicker from a roasting than you do coasting through Westmeath.

I've always liked Jason Flynn. I think he'd be great off the bench late in close matches. Not everyone is meant to be a starter in every match I guess. We're lucky to have him.

It's psychology Tommy. and at 29 years of age if it hasnt been sorted by now not even an army of psychologists would be able to change him now.

Kevin Cooney didn't click last year. He just played marginally better than he had during his previous years on the panel. He hits more wides than points and wouldnt get near the starting 15 for Clare, Kilkenny, Limerick or anyone else for that matter. Unfortunately "size matters" when it comes to senior intercounty hurling these days. Galway had mostly big men in 2017 and Limerick have continued that trend since. You might get away with 1 or 2 "smaller" lads but not 4 or 5. That's why I would be worried if we started the likes of Grealish, O'Shea, Monaghan, Niland and Collins together as they would not be able for the physical hits / dominance that the likes of Limerick, KK etc. would bring to the table. I'm not saying playing some smaller lads was the only difference in the second half of the AI semifinal last year but it was a factor no doubt.

And I wouldn't. Niland one of our few forwards on Sunday who actually caught a ball in the air, which is more than Conor Cooney can do. Cooney nowhere near as good as Niland on frees either, and Niland has a neater touch and better control.

He'd walk onto either Clare or Kilkenny teams. Do you think Billy Ryan, who didn't puck a ball in last year's AI final is better than him? Clare are by no means the real deal yet, haven't proven anything by way of success.

Limerick have 4 or 5 less than 6ft.

Saw the U20s had a challenge against Clare at the weekend. Did anyone manage to see it or get an idea on a team? Kinvara (Galway) - Posts: 128 - 13/02/2024 13:03:26 2525836 Link 1 |
I'd agree, Niland adds plenty and hopefully improve this year. Conor Cooney has been poor shooting wise but in general puts in a good shift.

He did click last year, he caused teams all sorts of problems, took pressure off Whelan by winning dirty ball and indeed clean ball. He does need to improve on his shooting.

I didn't see the game but I'd imagine a lot of the Pres lads wouldn't have played with their quarter final coming up. It will be a nice team when they get up and running with Burke and Niland up front.
