Replying To BreffniBlue:  "Virginia Blues had to change their name and club colors in the 1970's to a neutral name (lake name) to appease the Maghera contingent who wouldn't play under the Virginia name or colors.

A united parish team with Lurgan, Virginia Blues and Maghera was formed under the banner of Ramor United with orange\black colors. At the twelfth hour at a county board meeting in the court house in virginia a couple of Maghera diehards decided to pull the plug on the parish football team unification and continue Maghera regardless.

That's why to this day Maghera struggles with numbers, Maghera families play with Ramor because this is the parish team and that's the right thing to do. The Lurgan end of the parish accepted the change to Ramor, the Virginia part of the parish accepted a name change and their famous jersey colour change at the bequest of Maghera but when all was agreed a couple of Maghera diehards went back on the agreement."
In fairness to Ramor, a lot of the so called "Maghera families" have been playing for Ramor for quite some time. The O'Connell's (Eamonn before Brian), The Cole's (Sean, Ray etc. before Shane, Ado) for example. If I were living in Maghera I would certainly be running my kids up to Ramor, over to Cuchullians or across the lake to Munterconnacht. From talking to some Maghera folk there is a lot of self pity and blame put on Ramor for their demise but they need to take a good hard look at themselves and ask the question why that is. I also believe that some Ramor players transferred over to Maghera this year, so it's not all one way traffic.

Slow day at work here so I put together some of my thoughts on the championship so far. Nobody shooting the lights out but plenty of time for that yet.
Ramor have probably been the most impressive with James Brady very good. I thought Jack Brady was outstanding against Crosserlough the first day out. Ramor look porous at the back and now have an injury concern in O'Connell.
Massive game for Crosserlough this weekend. Looking at that draw, 3 points may well be short, therefore Gowna can potentially take Crosserlough faith away from them this weekend. Similarly Gaels can knock Castlerahan out with a game to spare, which is quite remarkable but a long way to go of course.
Kingscourt going nicely under the radar similar to last year. Some nice draws for them and key players all getting fit at the right time. I'm sure they will feel they left last years final behind them.
Shercock will be kicking themselves they didnt beat Kingscourt on the opening weekend. Clarke missed a relatively straightforward free with about 5 mins to go which probably would have got them over the line. They were poor against Ramor but won't fear Lavey.
Mullahoran will be delighted I'm sure with 2 from 2. I didn't think they were great in either game but a win is a win. The two young wing forwards have been impressive for them. Enda and Cormac OReilly are also as solid a forward as anywhere.
Killygarry looked quite disorganised, running aimlessly and kicking wastefully throughout their 3 games. Not sure why they kept taking off their big midfielder who was one of their better performers, perhaps carrying an injury.
Laragh will fancy their chances of making a quarter final now. After a poor start against Lacken, they are now playing with the shackles off and getting lots of runners through the middle.
Ballinagh have been brilliant to watch. The two young forwards Finnegan and Smith have been fabulous. Add in McDermott and Smith eile and Ballinagh have as dangerous a forward line as anyone. If they had more legs around the middle and in defence, they would be one hell of a team.
Gaels are probably lacking firepower outside McKiernan but will obviously be tough bet.
If Lavey beat Shercock, they should make it through but they don't look as strong as previous years.
Overall, the senior championship is hard to call this year. With a nice draw, an underdog could come close.
Would like to have seen more of the intermediate and junior. I would be interested to see Cuchullainns after a good league. Ballyhaise looking strong and Cornafean going well so far. Great win for Templeport.

Replying To CavanAgain:  "So when was the last time Maghera won a game? Who did they beat and what was the score?"
I believe the last time they won a game was 2012 championship v Corlough. Could have been 2011 either. Fair play to them for keeping on plugging away and keeping their club going. Just look at corlough who had beaten them several times over the last 9 to 10 years joining with swad to play now this last 2 years.

Huge defeat for Crosserlough last night. Gowna deserved winners.
So last years champions crosserlough will now fail to get out of the group stage?

Xlough very poor gowna looking good and will take some stopping. Xlough used up all their luck last year and Adrian Smith is a huge loss.

Indeed crosserlough were lucky in the drawn game last year, if Kingscourt had kicked that late free and gone 3 up crosserlough were gone. They were deserved winners in the replay however.

Its still incredible that after all the massive resources the crosserlough club have invested in that team that they only have one senior championship to show for it

"Massive resources"? Could you expand on that one. Is there a Russian oligarch behind the scenes or something

3 pts could be enough to get through. Not gone yet

They need to win and hope Castlerahan beat Ballinagh which doesn't look to likely.

If Crosserlough don't get out when would be the last time that the Senior winners for the last 3 years did not make the Quarter Finals?

Replying To LackenQuality79:  "I was in Breffni last night for Lavey Laragh. Laragh was like a different team to what played us last week. They played Lavey off the pitch you'd have to laugh that there were 3 county players on the pitch and none of them Laragh. Mickey or whoever is over the county next year needs to seriously consider getting some of these Laragh men in on the panel. Fergal McKenna is a great option for midfield with Thomas and James Smith. O'Rourke in goal, Paul Smith and Jack McKenna also need to be considered.
That's just one team that I've seen twice in a week now with players blatantly better than lads on the current panel. Looking forward to getting to a few games Sunday. Great games so far."
Just catching up with the thread. Who were the 3 county players on the pitch? Lavey only had 3 players on the panel this year and one, Danny Cusack, hasn't played a championship game yet with injury.
As for the Laragh lads, even the Laragh people state they don't have an interest in committing to intercounty football so not sure what Mickey ''or whoever'' can do about changing that.

i say the reason the laragh lads wont committ is the disgraceful way they were treated with the county minors a few years ago named on county teams and not even on the first 25 on day of match and not even the manners to inform them of same

If a player is playing well enough to be called into the county the manager should be picking up the phone and ringing them regardless of whether they think they will come in or not they should be asked.

Didn't it happen to the Gaels a few years back?

Chris Conroy and Gerry Smith were 2 and I thought Paul Gilchreest was on it to but maybe you know? Either way Laragh played them off the park and could have had a few more goals. I met a Laragh man at the Lacken Gowna match last week and asked him why they haven't any lads on the panel and he said they weren't asked so you can't fault lads for not committing if they're not asked. If there's anything this championship is teaching us it's that we are a mile off having the best players available to the county team.

Who else has impressed people so far in the championship?

There's so many good young players out there that can contribute. How many lads have we on the panel that spend the year injured running up expenses and not actually offering anything on the field? Get rid of them and chance a few youngsters when we're in div 4. Can't sink any lower.
