Deliberate Tearing Of An Opponents Jersey -Should Be A Red Card Offence

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

looking at the trend in recent games where lads jerseys are ripped off them almost, looks dispicable to be honest and says alot about the anyone that would resort to such a thing, of course yes, "sledging" may occur leading to it, but no more than our country flag, a county jersey, for any county should be treated with the utmost of respect by everyone, own team and opposition included. Where a player says someting to kick off a scrap, very hard to solve that unless players and ref etc. are put n mic..which of course will be next to be impossible I know, but regardless of what a fellah says to you, going and ripping the jersey off of him a thuggish thing to do and doesnt say a whole lot about anyone that goes down that road..where something does occur and two lads go at it, send both off maybe, but this thing of grabbing on and ripping jerseys off lads is a disgrace, yes some cases are genuinely triggered no doubt, but there needs be a way of addressing it,,or its worse it will get...

This isn't at all workable. Imagine a scenario in which two players are equally at fault but one lad happens to be stronger and rips his opponents jersey, he will be punished for something his opponent was also at. The only way any of these rules can work would be to have video technology.

I think it was Diarmuid Connolly that introduced the easily tearable jersey into the game.
Can't recall the full details at this remove but Dermo was involved!

I'm not sure of your argument.

I'd be more concerned about dangerous or cynical play. Not sure why you are fixating on the jersey element or why you see there being some sort of prevalent issue?

my point is tearing the jersey should be a sending off offence..if a player isnt strong enough to tear his opponents is no reason to leave him on the field..I do admit how it could be sorted is a very difficult question...surely though with technology a clip on mic on on collar of each jersey linked to the ref or sideline only (not national tv) should surely be possible this day and age...I suppose if we cant manage a simple hawk eye system for all intercounty games regardless of venue then my micing up soloution is light years away realistically..

.it should be a serious offence to interfere with anyones jersey in a violent or vicious fashion...how stop that incident from starting is the issue...

Ah here. It's. It's not a major issue of concern. There are other more important issues to deal with. The advanced mark is one of those.

Its a thuggish behaviour creeping into the game, lets call it what it is...only a certain type of charachter will drop to that level...yes there are other issues, not necessarily more important...thats your view..

definitely not - In my own personal opinion we have the game
overly rule-heavy already and it has diminished the game in my eyes. Players can barely challenge anymore. In my view deliberate pulling down ala rugby tackles should be stamped down upon with cards but fair shoulder tackles and challenging the opposition with reasonable force to the body shouldnt be a big deal, again in my own personal view, and its up to the discretion of the defending player and the referee. Dirty tackles are dirty tackles and should always be carded but tough tackling and intensity being carded and blown as fouls are diminishing the art of defending. We are one or two more law changes around the tackle area from being close to a non contact sport.

Pulling and tearing jersies is not a recent development, its been there forever and is in lots of sports, ithappens and that's it,it usually happens during violent conduct which gets a yellow card,no need for new rules on it.

It's just proof of a well run S&C programme for me. When bone breaking challenges have been regulated better for let the GAA turn its attention to the quality of match-wear and players disrespecting it.

You initial point on challenges is a fair one.

However on the issue of disrespecting the jersey, HQ/Rules committee should categorically not be involved. To take a recent obvious example its up to Galway mgt. to drop players they feel are guilty of this in their recent performances.

The jerseys I used to wear in the club game, a crocodile wouldn't tear them. What are they making them out these days - tissue paper?

Not insulting at all, if a player is being wrestled to the ground would you rather he grabbed the opponents hair or just fell , of course he's going to grab something. Thanks.
