Mayo V Tyrone All-Ireland Football Final

Replying To essmac:  "Lot of concern in Tyrone about Mayo. I'd much rather we were playing Dublin in the final. Those new guys Mayo have are excellent, with great engines. Won't be any cramping, that's for sure. And Mayo will have the sympathy of the ref and will get softer frees. That's inevitable; Mayo's quest for Sam is a national saga, and that sympathy won't do them any harm. Mayo have been consistently there or thereabouts for several years. Hardened operators, and they get better as they progress in a competition. They beat Dublin despite playing a very poor first half. Very big ask for Tyrone."
Joe McQuillan is the ref and he certainly has no reputation for being sympathetic towards Mayo. Thought it might be David Gough tbh. seems strange to have Ulster ref and umpires when an Ulster team is involved but we must trust his integrity.

Don't get this same province business. Gough reffed two big Dublin Kerry games 16 & 19 (very differently as it happens) and he's from Meath & lives in Dublin. Deegan reffed Mayo Dublin and he's from Laois. DJ is called that for a reason despite being from Cavan. Etc etc
And Cormac Reilly isn't from Munster but would any grown ups say he didn't decide the outcome of the Mayo Kerry replay in 14.

Replying To Viking66:  "Why is the fact Kerry didnt play a game in 5 weeks made such a big deal of? It was only a week more than Tyrone were off. And Tyrone werent even able to play practice matches for 3 of those 4 weeks. While I'd love to see Tyrone win by 7 or 8 it's not going to happen. Whoever wins will win by 1 goal or less. Hopefully Tyrone will win but I'd be very happy for Mayo to end their drought if not."
Viking66 (Wexford) I have no way of knowing what Tyrone's preparations for the Kerry game were. Kerry agreed sportingly to appease Tyrones request for an extra week because of covid so theres no argument with any of that, The fitness level between the teams was very noticeable, Tyrone were playing off a different level what else could you put Tyrone's winning performance down to, Mayo are facing the same 1 extra week layoff. Kerry's was 1 off 5, Mayo's is 1 off 4, Tyrone's fitness level and playing Mayo at their own game will win it for them, my head say's Tyrone my heart say's Mayo.

Replying To HokeyPokey:  "Yes. Very little commentary on Tyrone's achievement of doing it with so many issues. Kerry maybe had a bit of twiddling their thumbs, but Tyrone had to face a whole range of issues. It's not as if Tyrone were coming into it having a load of qualifiers, they didn't have their team together until just over a week before the match.

Jack O'Connor pointed out how Mattie Donnelly didn't look right in the build up and for most of the match and I think there was a bit of ring rustiness in some of their kicking."
I thought the same as Jack O Connor. I thought Mattie Donnelly was not a well man by his colour.

I was sure David Geough or Maurice Deegan would have got the referee job. I sincerely hope Joe has a good game.

It's a combination of factors: the high illiteracy rate in Mayo, combined with Galwegians just being more naturally talented at everything.

:)

Best of luck in the game Yew.

You're right to be concerned, Mayo's record in All Ireland finals is second to none!

Replying To BeJasus:  "Meath fans will want a Mayo victory so they can put themselves on the same pedestal as them , and point towards giving Dublin a slight scare.

Dublin fans obviously would like to see a Mayo win giving they were the ones who kept knocking on the door , while the rest of the country were digging up financial conspiracy's theories and population ratio issues to mask their own shortcoming's."
Actually no. Why would we put ourselves on same level ?? Mayo can certainly thank Meath for showing them the way to beat Dublin (only we didn't have the quality of players mayo had to finish the job). We know where we are. But we also know where we are going.

We'll win because we'll score more than Tyrone in an All Ireland final. Time to start thinking how we will win rather than how we might lose another final. We're the keyboard warriors looking at the negatives. We need to be more positive. We can be sure that Mayo and Tyrone players and coaches are focussing on the positives and what needs to be done on the day. Should be a cracker of a game.

Normally I would believe that Mayo was Tyrone's boggie team - but not after we went down to Castlebar and relegated them - that was a nail in the coffin for Myao and why I believe we will win next Saturday....that was a day when Mayo had to win but this team especially McKenna and young Canavangh shone ....

Mayo were awful that day, were 8 points down, fought back and ended up losing by a single point. Since that game Mayo have won two Connacht titles, won promotion back to division 1 and are appearing in back to back All Ireland finals…some nail….ye might need a few of them Sat week ;)

Croke Park will be a different ball game but Mayo will need to use the full width of the pitch to drag Tyrone out of their comfort zone.

Kerry failed to do that and paid the price.

You should know by now not to pay too much heed to league results.

I reckon Tyrone purposely lost the league game against Kerry to lull them into a false sense of security knowing that they would face them in the All-Ireland semi final.

Dark arts.
