Stephen Rochford gives his thoughts on the match. Great analysis. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7984 - 07/08/2021 12:21:22 2368457 Link 7 |
Seen that Duff sending off on youtube, there was nothing in it, he just flicked the leg out, a stupid thing to do but he was after wrestling a bit with the Galway man and the Galway man fell to the ground, it was a kind of a flick you might make at a dogs arse when he's scampering away from you after acting up, Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 3191 - 07/08/2021 12:23:15 2368458 Link 4 |
With a week to go until Dublin v Mayo I'm surprised there isn't a thread relating to the game. ponga (Mayo) - Posts: 658 - 07/08/2021 12:35:56 2368464 Link 2 |
It should be an interesting game. Will the key Dublin players be as lethargic the next day? I doubt it. They certainly won't fade in the second half like Galway, their fitness, strength and conditioning is phenomenal - the same can be said about Mayo. Mayo have a good record against Dublin in semi-finals....hard to know what's going to happen. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1849 - 07/08/2021 13:18:34 2368477 Link 0 |
I was at that game but my memory kind of blurred. I just read up on it yesterday again and heard about a 15 year old stabbed on hill 16.Dont know about the Galwayy train but Galway supporters on buses were stoned on route to croke park and many cars were robbed also. Check out Vincent Hogan's on Dublin v Galway 1983.A German tourist aborted his mission of attending game due to a stampede. Now alot of the incidents happened outside of Croke park. When i was young the Kerry train was often stoned after big matches shortly after leaving Heston Station. A lad I knew was lucky he did nt lose his eye as a rock smashed the train window he was sitting at and left his his eye cut and swollen. However alot of the i cideny were carried out by thugs not supporters and as Barney posted earlier alot of scum hangers on that time too that we don't see nowadays T. G.. On Ciarán Duff. I met him at the 2017 hurling final and he was supporting Galway. I was with a Dublin pal of mine who intruduced me to Ciarán who did confirm that Galway hurlers stood up for him in the USA when he was being picked on by other gaa players from a Leinster team so he had great time for Galway hurling.

Yeah crazy stuff Forever but you know I saw the full game a while back on tg 4 and while it was a very poor game it was nt as bad as I remembered for the dirty side. A few unsavoury incidents yes but maybe too much made of it. The weather certainly did nt help and the wind was cat. On the all stars issue both Duff and Mullins would have got all stars but that time a sending off automatically disqualified one from an all star.

There were no sandwiches on the train then. There were sangwidges lol

Had a couple of pints with two lads on that team a couple of years ago- was a league game vs Mayo in Croker just before Anton passed away, was a night out with for him with the 83 panel the lads were on the way up to. They had some great sceals, and I was left thinking what a terrific team spirit that group had, may have not gone down as the greatest team ever, considering the era, but seemed a really good close bunch with a great spirit and a bit of stardust. Still all great characters. They were telling me some didn't make it back to Dublin a week after the semi against Cork, the last day spent trying to get their gear out of a B&B, they'd never slept in! :D TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4516 - 07/08/2021 17:37:18 2368548 Link 0 |
Yeah players deffo enjoyed themselves alot more those times. It's gone too professional now. That time after league games the players would mix with the opposing players and have pints together. I recall reading an article by Jimmy Kerrigan (Cork) a couple of years ago saying his son Paul only knows Cork players as they don't socialise much. In Jimmy s time he said we know all the Kerry Dublin players and so on. He said the enjoyment was less now as the only time opposing players get to be together is all stars or compromise rules. Also the league nowadays is taken seriously. That time players played hard but socialised hard too. As you say Username the seals are great and those times the players had great tales and camradire

We called them sangwidges as well in those years. I'm glad that young fella didn't lose his eyesight on the train out of Dublin. Rocks used to be thrown at the train other times as well, not just All Ireland Sunday, young fellas not fully appreciating the damage they could cause.

Shouldn't you remember the results from the 2019 and 2020 Leinster finals? That's right Meath lost by a collective of 37 points scoring a total of 13 points on the way. That's an average of 6.5 points per final and for all the great statisticians in Meath thats 3.25 points a half over 4 half's of football, on average! Well done, congratulations, what a great team. jonno (Kildare) - Posts: 261 - 08/08/2021 10:24:07 2368744 Link 6 |
Yes for sure. Yeah that lad was lucky with his eye. He s a grown man now but it affected him for a long time. Not the eye but more mental. They were nothing but scum with no interest in sport. They just had interest in carnage. Oh it happened on numerous occasions but luckily I only recall that one horrific incident.

It was extremely dangerous particularly between Meath and Dublin at the time.

And as Babs said a few years back - Galway never thanked or acknowledged Tipperary for voting to reinstate Tony Keady.

Well in fairness Keady did acknowledge Tipp and was grateful but was kind of shocked and hurt that his Connaught counterparts voted against him. Folklore has it that Tipp were the ones that reported Keady but that was never proven and seems unlikely as Tipp also had a player in the same circumstance.

Babs had a mouth and what came out of it didn't always come from his brain! If Tipp hadn't reported it and objected to Keady initially, there wouldn't have been a vote. Oddly enough they didn't report their own player! Wasn't Babs the one who called the Offaly hurlers donkeys, the same donkeys that defeated your own county! The Galwayman who took over Offaly said they were the finest hurlers, that they didn't need any coaching!
