Take the tin foil hat off. Is there any reason why Galway wouldn't relish going to Croke Park?

I agree tickets should be divided 9,000 each. Would Galway bring 9,000 to Croker though? I don't remember ye bringing that many to MacHale Park in the last 10 years for championship games ;) send the left over back our way....thanks

They couldn't run a chip shop."
On this occasion it appears it's not about making money but about giving more fans the chance to attend...what's wrong with that?

Maybe they made a decision to give more supporters an opportunity to see the game, at the expense of a few quid. Surely that should be commended, unless you think the GAA's only purpose is to make money?
They're unfairly slagged as money-grabbers from some quarters, yet when they take a financial hit to give more people a chance to attend, you're giving them stick.

I can think of 19 years of reasons. :)
Seriously, it's where you should want to be playing. Mayo obviously have been much more frequent visitors there over the past 10 years, but that should be irrelevant if we want to consider ourselves a progressing team.
The game will be won and lost based on how the teams perform between the white lines.

Good enough idea to get a decent sized crowd in, they should move the Ulster final there too, give the winners a run out to get used to Croker again before the All Ireland semi final. Prob suits mayo more than Galway having played there more in recent years, hard to know what to make of Galway's form, should be interesting.

I often wondered about that figure of 30,000 for the Gaa to break even.I mean if its first round game it might be 15 e entrance fee and if its a leinster final it might be 40 e entrance fee. Also during the league its often a 10e fee so where do they get this figure of 30,000.In other words if there is 29,000 fans at croker at 40e a head the gaa lose money although they take in 1160000 euros and if theres 31,000 at aleague game at a 10e a head they make money although they take in only 310,000 e. Then again the gaa and money is an enigma

Im OK with it, if it let's more fans in. So long as it's OK with mayo, who are losing their home advantage, why not?

Or maybe its just the best way of allowing a decent crowd to attend a game under the current covid restrictions? I think its well worth it for the sake of giving many more fans the opportunity to go and generate some proper atmosphere at a provincial final.

It's not quite the Polo Grounds endgame, but as a staycation it's probably as good as it's going to get. At least Mayo and Galway will both get to play at Croker this year and it'll favour the speed merchants which both sides have. Still 50/50 for me.

This is hardly tin foil hat stuff. Widely acknowledged that Horan has built his team to suit the wide, fast, open pitch at Croke Park. This suits him down to the ground. The Galway lads were very happy to be going to Castlebar. Horan knew this too. Anyway, it's on in Croker now and, if there's tickets to be had, I'll be heading up! The craic will be good.

I have been calling on GAA hq to give Connacht football more respect. This move is imho a step in the right direction. Ok, sad to see Castlebar miss out. But it will imho help Connacht teams to play more in Croke park.

I'll take it. Great to have a chance to attend a game at this stage.

Traffic will be crazy because there will be no supporters buses I'd say and the trains will be very limited

Of course it's tin foil hat stuff. You are saying that Mayo and James Horan somehow have the political muscle to compel the GAA to move a game to Croke Park and that the motivations behind this are because Galway would be relishing a day out in Castlebar. Nothing to do with the fact that the guts of 15,000 extra people will be able to see the game in person. It's pure conspiracy theory nonsense. It's amazing how fans of all counties (and indeed fans of teams in other codes) always try to make out that they are perpetual victims of some sort of unfair bias. No one is trying to shaft Galway, no one in Mayo has the power to compel the GAA to do something that they don't want to do. The only obvious motivation here is to allow 15,000 extra people into the game. But if you want to view Galway as some sort of victim of Mayo politicking then work away.

You also didn't answer why Galway wouldn't relish a chance to play in Croke Park? Surely it would be to Galway's benefit going into an All Ireland Semi Final against Dublin if they beat Mayo?

They wont be opening all the stands, maybe just one stand, there be no food or drink stall open, less of a clean up, far less staff and stewards needed so with all that costs should be well down.

The 'Croke Pk needs 30k attendance to break even' argument is real leprechaun economics.

The type of thing you'd hear from someone down the chipper after a few scoops.
