I think Joyce has gotten some unfair slack from Galway supporters. He's brought in a host of new players. Before covid they were flying, were they top of division 1. I happened to be in Galway the weekend they played Tyrone and went to see it in Tuam. Thought they were in great nick. Dont think they will beat Mayo but I think it would seem crazy to get rid of Joyce. 97Cavans (Cavan) - Posts: 306 - 05/07/2021 17:19:27 2356659 Link 2 |
Hard question to answer that.If you looked at it before Covid struck you'd say a definite yes as they were flying, playing great attacking football and full of confidence.then covid came and when they got back they played mayo in Tuam.Mayo badly needed a result and went fill tilt at it where as Joyce if I'm honest looked to try and be too cute with his selection.could arguably say the team that finished the game that day was stronger than the one that started.hence the better performance in the 2nd half.after that game and the kerry game this year we saw a much more defensive setup from Joyce.which was totally at odds to the way he maintained he wanted to play when getting the job.to answer yer question, its hard to argue they've improved much since he took over despite some impressive showings from some of the younger lads.no nearer winning anything now and back down to division 2 for next year.

It's all Connacht have won in the past 55 years also. For Mayo it's 70 years and 77 years for Roscommon.

There's more than one grade in football you know, it's not all about senior inter-county. I'm sure Connacht teams have plenty club, minor etc. All-Irelands. What about Roscommon's St. Brigids or Corofin of Galway, tell them fellas they never won an All-Ireland and they'll laugh at you. AfricanGael (UK) - Posts: 1947 - 05/07/2021 22:24:40 2356778 Link 1 |
Prior to 2017 the hurlers hadn't won an All Ireland Senior title since 1988. The footballers have won 2 senior titles since 1988. Until very recent time there have been more teams capable of competing at the highest level in football than in hurling and it has ever been thus. Granted the football championship in recent years been reduced to a two or three horse race but that has been the way in hurling since the foundation of the GAA. There have been some glorious exceptions most particularly in the mid nineties but those times have been few and far between. We are in one of them now with Limerick's emergence. In total Kilkenny (36), Cork (30) and Tipp (28) have won 94 senior titles between them. The rest have won 39 titles between them. The football championship has until very recent times been a much more open competition than the hurling. Despite this Galway footballers (9) have won nearly twice as many senior titles as the hurlers (5).

Yes they like to bad mouth Connacht teams and talk up the other provinces. Not sure why.

The discussion was about senior All Irelands if you had been following it. Roscommon won the minor All Ireland in 2006.

1998 we struggled to get a draw against Rossies in Tuam. The replay went to extra time before we eventually won it. We know what happened next. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1824 - 06/07/2021 21:32:50 2357155 Link 1 |
True but Roscommon and especially Mayo had great teams at the time. They helped Galway prepare.

Connacht football peaked in those years. 1999 in Tuam must have had over 30k jammed into Tuam. If would have been interesting if there was a back door in them years. For Galway in 99 and ourselves in 1998 when ye knocked us out in the first round in Castlebar.

Kerry and Dublin would have been be coming in the backdoor in 99, Cork and Meath in that final. Knockout is the way to go. suckvalleypaddy (Galway) - Posts: 1662 - 08/07/2021 12:27:23 2357642 Link 0 |
So you reckon go back to straight knockout? With the amount of time and effort and year around conditioning players go through to play ONE big game a year? Come of it. We have to show case our best teams and players.

Great days both. Spent the night before '98 Mayo game in Westport. The start of an epic journey from the Castlecourt to Rockinrobins in Carrick to Leeson Street (twice) and ending up on the street in Tuam on the Monday! (Didn't stay over for Rossies replay!) '99 We had a great day in Tuam even though we lost. Crowd was crazy that year. I doubt it would have passed a fire inspection! The first game against Rossies in '98 was a washout. Absolute terrible conditions. If memory serves me right Niall Finnegan got us out of jail with a late free from out on the left. I think we were a Div 3 team in 1998.
