Replying To Oldtourman:  "Bloodyban. Laois and Offaly were respectively called Queens and Kings County with Portleix called Maryborough and Birr called Philipborough. Both Philip and Mary were Catholic Monarchs. There was also a Catholic Plantation in North Wexford and Mrs OTMs maiden name is one of a few common there that are English names to this day."
Birr was called Parsonstown, the family name of the Earls of Roses. Daingean was formerly called Philipstown, after King Philip. It was the capital of Offaly until the assizes was transferred to Tullamore in the 1820's. Tullamore is now the capital town.
Plantations involved replacing local families with foreign settlers from England, Scotland, and Wales. Not much joy for the original landowners.
