If winning three matches is a success well then I'll take it.

Can I say fair play to Offaly/Derry for going ahead with the div 3 final next Saturday evening..it is a real pity for everyone that no other final looks likely to be played..I wonder how do Allianz feel as league sponsor.. CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2225 - 14/06/2021 22:15:12 2350987 Link 1 |
Not sure it's a great idea by Offaly though, it really only suits Derry.

not being biased but indeed, fair play to Offaly and Derry, a final is a final ( Ill be the first to say I am not a fan of these Divisional finals, but its the way it is, and its a chance for Offaly and Derry to lift a bit of silverware) so great to see both wanting to play...Limerick were unlucky against Derry, but Limerick had a solid campaign and have a steady team now and wish them well in Munster...

To think Offaly beat Derry in the final in the 90s to wth the NFL outright. skirge7 (UK) - Posts: 251 - 14/06/2021 23:46:09 2351012 Link 0 |
Indeed, the league final win in 2019 was a good day for Mayo fans. Ridiculous to have a league competition without a proper conclusion IMO. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 16/06/2021 12:40:17 2351397 Link 0 |
A league without playoffs doesnt mean there isnt a proper conclusion.

How does the league not have a proper conclusion?

You could invest Blackbogs 50k Ollie! Youd be Louths JP or Shane Lowry?!

Because there's no outright winner. Any competition in which the trophy is shared isn't a proper competition in my eyes. I would also suggest that it's fine to determine the winner of the league based merely on the regular league fixtures without playoffs (in normal times, obviously that's a bit more difficult to achieve at the moment due to the pandemic and having north and south divisions). Playing semi-finals without a final is a half-a**ed measure by any standard, an Irish solution to an Irish problem. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 17/06/2021 09:10:02 2351556 Link 2 |
Of course where a trophy is shared is proper. The teams played same amount of games, now they shouldnt have had semis without then playing the final but its fairly unique circumstances but it was known before hand that finals wouldnt be played if teams got to final and had championship the following week KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3511 - 17/06/2021 10:05:12 2351567 Link 0 |
So, answer me this: why can't a final be played? We have a truncated inter-county GAA season that's only running between May-September and plenty of weekends left whereby a final game could be played. As I said, I'm not against deciding the leagues on regular league season results alone, but this is not the route the GAA decided to go down. Playing semi-finals without finals is utterly pointless IMO. No competition in which there are two winners (without having some deciding factor at play, like points difference, head-to-head results, a final) is a proper competition. And as some other posters have alluded to, a divisional trophy may well be the only realistic silverware on offer to several counties. Why deprive them of that? Mayo v Kildare and Kerry v Dublin would have been 2 great games, no reason they couldn't have been played. Tirchonaill1 (Donegal) - Posts: 2756 - 17/06/2021 10:36:22 2351575 Link 0 |
I'll invest it in Louths new GAA Ground in Dundalk.

"So, answer me this: why can't a final be played"? Clearly they can be played if counties agree on it, like what Derry and Offaly have done. There's obviously no desire for the others to do it. Derry and Offaly have made the GAA look like bigger fools that what they are, and that takes some doing. I'm sure they are absolutely livid that they have been pushed aside by the two counties mentioned. AfricanGael (UK) - Posts: 1947 - 17/06/2021 13:36:11 2351622 Link 0 |
Someone had the very good idea of getting the finalists to play their league final after their championship involvement is finished.

I wouldn't bother my hole, get back involved with club football and leave the Gah red faced.

Good idea, think Kerry v Dublin if they get to the All Ireland final could play for both titles.

With the Gah, it's make it up as you go along. The plan was always that if finalists meet in the Championship that it would double up as a league final as well. And these fellas want "Elite" status lol, couldn't run a bath. AfricanGael (UK) - Posts: 1947 - 17/06/2021 21:59:19 2351748 Link 0 |
