With the news breaking last night regarding lockdown extended for 9 weeks how do we see 2021 panning out?

In my opinion it looks like we will run it exactly as we ran last years with club before county and we will have no league for either club or county. Hopefully the county board learned there lessons from last year.

Looking that way alright. This government is a joke. Kite flying and conflicting leaks every day. A three hour sub Cabinet meeting last night to decide on......nothing. We'll let you know next week folks. Clowns.

I think so. They will run club competitions over the summer in all likelihood, pushing inter county back to later in the year in the hopes that the vaccine rollout will allow at least limited crowds at big IC games.

This government are a joke. Why can't they adopt a county by county approach again? Half the cases were in Dublin yesterday.
Underage sport should return when the evenings start to get a bit brighter in March, as there is no meeting up after games or in houses etc. Lack of contact and involvement in team sports is doing these kids across the country serious long term harm.
Intercounty should be played first (starting in April) and club second. We can watch that on television and play or go to support our clubs later on in summer.
There are far more club players across the country so will be a lot safer to manage the movement of 32 intercounty teams in April, May, June and July who are practically professional and have the resources to manage it well. You would imagine by the end of July a lot of people will be vaccinated meaning we can play adult club in August, September and October.
Sports like golf, tennis etc should be allowed back ASAP.
Jesus its a long time until May especially with the evening getting brighter. There is untold damage being done to peoples mental health.

In fairness the UK variant is responsible for 90% of the cases at present in Ireland. Opening up before Christmas and slack Airport control and then this new variant means this year more of a a struggle

Northern Ireland in lockdown till April 1st so the Republic having a longer lockdown no surprise. Vaccine roll out is slow, NI could have all vaccinated in next few months, helped by UK no longer being in Europe

They have mishandled the pandemic by lurching between the extremes of lockdown and opening up too much. Instead of letting everything go for December they should've kept some restrictions in place as regards indoor activities. With the cold no1 I know is keeping windows and doors open so it was inevitable there would be a massive spike in cases. Theres very little evidence that outdoor activities, either work or sport, has been responsible for any great number of cases. Obviously people would have to get changed at home or in their cars though.

Also they are predominantly giving the Astra zeneca vaccine. My mother got it and they told her it's only 50-60% effective!

This might be wrong to say but I really fear for Gaa at club level..if Gaa comes back 1st week I in May,5 weeks training for inter county teams goes to first week in July..that means into 7th month and nothing started..I know lives are all important but it's a real pity that everyone isn't given dates to look forward to..talking to club players in different clubs and they don't have any idea what to do,looks to me like the minor and under 20 hurling from 2020 definitely won't be finished..anyone come on and see hope of any games?im hearing talk to of possible club first again..

Yeah its just one jab so they would be moving through the numbers. Thoughits obviously a big risk if not that effective.
they plan to use that here for the ages between 65-69 https://www.thejournal.ie/hospitalisations-covid19-5358115-Feb2021/

These Asian countries must be laughing at Europe and particularly Ireland, a small island that cannot contain it at this stage when Asian countries have proven since last July how to effectively deal with the virus. Watching the Australian open tennis with fans in stadium and were here still debating whether zero covid strategies even work..

The GAA need to show leadership and stop carrying water, hiding behind the hypocrisy and bungling of Government. They represent the greatest number of sports people in the country. One of the nonsense is a semi pro soccer player can go to a work place, play and train, return to home and community but a GAA player can't. Is the travelling on planes by rugby necessary ? O they are making their living. Cry me a river. Many many people's living is on hold and they are not doing any thing as dangerous. We have posters on threads on here offering the excuse that these semi pros are getting tested. So if 12 footballers or hurlers go get tested and are negative can they go open club ground gates and train ?
No way trying to play down the seriousness of this virus and the necessity for regulations but the inconsistence are too much. The GAA need to grow a pair and stand up for their members before they are lost. The GAA instead of cow tying to everything from politicians need to come out and public state that they want their members treated equally. After all GAA is the most "elite" sport in Ireland by a country mile.
P.S.
Not anti other sports and played Rugby.

Best thing is to tell them to enjoy their time off, and relax. Their bodies will be glad of the break.

It'll be July /August before we know it

Hasn't Australia exited, and reentered lockdown a few times this last year?

Sister lives in Melbourne. They had a longish lockdown last year. 5 day lockdown last week or maybe week before. But they have really strict controls on airports since last March

Suppose it will be a case of forget the leagues and just have a knockout Championship, make it open draw for the crack.

We are still pandering and pussy footing around 1 million unionists on an island of approx 7 million people, where's the democracy in that? why is the gov not planning for a border poll? FF leadership sound more like unionists to me nowadays.
This pandemic shows us partition has to end, if this had been foot and mouth disease the whole island would have dealt with it together.

Yeah they have short intense proper lockdowns, like Melbourne just came out of a 5 day lockdown because there was something like 10 community transmission cases. It was bad timing for the tennis as there there were no crowds for 5 days but crowds were back yesterday I think. They go after it hard as soon as it starts with a huge focus on contact tracing

Who's going to pay for the tests? Do you realise how much Covid test costs? For example, it's costing Football League soccer clubs in England around £100 pound a test.
