Replying To Fairplayalways:  "there were a few shocks in the Centenary Cup competition in 1984 and again in the Ford Cup the following year...Roscommon knocking out Wexford in hurling..is a big one...Monaghan reaching the final must have taken a few scalps along the way in 1984...a year before they won the league...."
Laois got to the hurling final of it. Beat Galway, Limerick and Tipp.

In the football. Westmeath beat Dublin. Derry beat Cork and Kerry.

Yes, Noel Sands was one of their star players. I was at the semi-finals in 1992 when Down played Cork and Gerard McGrattan gave an exhibition at wing forward. He scored a series of phenomenal points and I think he was selected as an all-star replacement that year. Greg Blaney was also on that team.

I actually seen Gerard McGrattans name there the other night and straight away remembered him..he was a great player as was Blayney..McGrattan name is down for a lead scorer in the NHL from back around one of those years too...I seen A D Woods on one of the Down teams too, and see a Woods on the team too that beat Offaly in the Christy RIng cup semi final there last Autumn..not a betting man but Ide guess he is a son of the D Woods of the 1990s...probably..

I remember it was a very novel tournament being complete open draw..Offaly lost semi final (I think to Monaghan) ..and while I know some teams didnt participate most took it serious and it was a breath of fresh air...

McGrattan won an actual all-star that year (1992) at no. 12. He was Down's first, and to date, only hurling all-star.

Derry came around that time too with some outstanding hurlers, Seamus Downey, Geoffrey McGonigle correct me if I am wrong would walk onto any county team even by todays changed standards...Derry had a few more too as had Down but without googling them they just dont come to mind right now...

2020 Ulster final, Donegal had their eye on taking on the Dubs and slipped up against Cavan who then went on to get trounced by the Dubs.

I suppose many would see it that way ok..it opens the question would possibly Cork (they did beat Kerry) or Donegal have caught Dublin then....most will say not but you never know..the bubble will burst sometime...

Donegal might've caught the Dubs, we'll never know but Cork would've gotten a similar pasting as Cavan or Tipperary who are at roughly the same level as them about the 10th to 18th best teams in the country.

Donegal and Kerry both badly slipped up and this shows how a championship without the back door favours them. Give them a second against a Cavan/ Cork/ Tipp even my own county of Meath in the back door and they'd have waltzed back in. It shows that for all the talk of the extra game(s) for weaker counties all the back door does is give the top counties a second chance. They can have an off day and still make it to a final.

You'd have to highlight too that the dubs have win all of their 8 all irelands through the front door and haven't had a second chance since Meath put 5 past Cluxton in 2010

Donegal beat Dublin in the '92 final and the 2014 semi final, we are the last team to have beaten them in Championship,
we are a bit of a bogey team for them I suppose, can't say if we'd have beaten them last year, probably not, but I think we would have ran them a lot closer than Cavan did,
hopefully we might get a crack at the Dubs this year. Cork took Kerry out in a shock defeat too and I think Kerry would also have run Dublin very close last year, lesson is you have to beat what's in front of you and not be thinking of what might lay ahead, lessons learned in 2020 bigtime.

Ulster championship would have had a good few over the years...maybe not so much now adays...like this year, did Cavans 1997 Ulster championship come as a bit of a shock, I know they were in an U21 All Ireland in 1988 (losing to Offaly)...

The Battle of the Boyne which took place on Easter Sunday April 8 2012. Louth v Meath in the last round of the National league. The loser would be relegated to Division 3. Louth went into the lions den and won a score-line of 2-14 to 1-08. They were winning 1-12 to 0-03 at half time. Meath were down to 13 men as both of their midfielders were send off. Derek Maguire put in a man of the match performance for the Wee County when he chipped in 2-02 on the scoreboard. Meath were relegated to Division 3 for the first time since the 1950's. This was Banty's last match managing the Royal County.

Munster Hurling Final 1955. Clare were red hot favourites after beating Cork and Tip,the AI chamions and League champions respectively. The bonfires were ready all the way into Limerick from Clare.Mackeys Greyhounds won by ten points and were subsequently beaten by Wexford in the AI semi final and Wexford went on to win the AI that year.It resonates with me as that was my first year attending Limerick hurling matches.

Jimmy Smyth the famed Clare Hurler of the period in the Clare Champion years later said

"In 1955, we beat Cork and Tipperary but we were annihilated by Limerick in the Munster final. This was a new-look Limerick team. They had a lot of great players. With only two or three exceptions, our team played below par."

The Clare Champion reporter offered no excuses for the debacle. He reported, "Clare were wiped off the field by a rampant Limerick team, which could not be matched for speed, accuracy and dash".
Stung by the 10-8 to 1-1 defeat in June 1953, Limerick came into the 1955 Munster final playing a type of hurling that hadn't been seen before. Vivian Cobbe, who was selected in the corner, was operating out on the half-forward line as an extra wing-forward, throwing the Clare backs into confusion.

A young Eamonn Cregan was present at the Gaelic Grounds on July 10, 1955 on that scorching day. Cregan describes the Clare team of 1953/1955 as marvellous.
